Happy New Year! Thanks for sharing this tradition. Just spent new years at my 99 year old grand aunt’s and there was a platter like this in the center of the table. She is a Japanese American from Hawaii so now I know where this tradition comes from! My Japanese American grandmother (mainland) did Oshogatsu a little differently.

Aloha Cari, & mom 😊 Mahalo for sharing of your local-style japanese tradition, of the morimono platter. Being of Hawaiian/Filipino ancestry we too have traditional comfort foods often shared during any potluck gathering, but more so during the Holidays because of what it represents. We as locals are very lucky being surrounded by multi-cultural ethnic foods and recipes, but what makes it special is when we are blessed with the significance and purpose of each item. And, your mom makes it her "own" when she's able to substitute for items hard to come by. It's adepting to the "now" times yet still connecting to the past. I feel good to know I can create and share a morimono, knowing the significance of this local Japanese flavored dish. Now, when I go to a potluck and see this I can say " that's a tasty looking morimono." To you, your mom, and the 'Ohana, stay blessed with continuous good health through the New Year 2025, and beyond 👐

My families tradition. Soba on New Year Eve, Ume, Kurumame and Ozoni (garnished with Red fishcake) on New Year day. More of a party gathering tradition, I recall Yokan and Red and Green Kanten, fruits. Sashimi, Steamed Red Fish.

I was watching this video and my sister Marian walked into the room, we both agreed that Kameryn (I hope I'm spelling her name correctly) looks so beautiful like a Gerber Baby. I always love your videos showing your family gatherings, what a beautiful and special thing to have. I'm so happy you share this with all of us so we can feel we are a part of it all as well. Akemashite Omedeto Gozaimasu to you and your entire family, Cari! What a beautiful gathering of your amazing family, and YES, you are so right about family gatherings for delicious potlucks. We celebrate traditional Japanese New Year here at our house. We hosted over 30 family members and friends with Osechi/Oshogatsu Ryori on New Years Day. Toshikoshi soba on New Years Eve, and Ozoni-mochi soup on New Years morning. A tradition that our son (Joshua) insisted that we carry on, after my mom-his baba, who did all the Oshogatsu cooking-passed away, 12 years ago. Josh came down from Oregon a few days before, and we had a blast shopping for the specialty food products at our Japanese Market and cooking everything together. He has promised to continue the tradition well after we are gone. I’m with your mama and your uncles, in that I love yokan and kuromame. Japanese tradition-or as told from my mama who was from Japan-is that you are supposed to eat your age in kuromame for good luck. LOL! I did, up until I turned 60. Now, that I’m 63, I can’t. 😅 Everything that you folks served looked so comforting and so ono! The shrimp that your mama made, looked delicious! My husband developed a severe shrimp allergy a few years back, so no shellfish of any kind anymore. My mom always made 3 slits on the top of the shrimp, spaced apart evenly, then pressed down until you feel a little snap. This is how she kept her shrimp from curling upon frying. Just thought I would share. ❤️ I wish you, your beautiful family, and extended family, a blessed and wonderful 2025. Thank you for sharing your family with us!

Aloha Cari! Wishing you and your wonderful 'ohana a Happy New Year. May we all keep our diet resolutions going past January 31. LOL Growing up in the Punahou/Makiki area, morimono was made. I recall the red kanten tasted like cinnamon or something. I was so fascinated with the green kamaboko and insisted it tasted different. What did a 10 yr old know back then. Your Mom's morimono brought back so much memories. Thank you for that, but most of all for sharing your family time with us.

Happy 2025, Cari! I’m sorry to have interrupted your peaceful shave ice outing earlier this week, but I just had to say Hello❣️ One of my favorite New Year’s dishes was always morimono - it stemmed from watching my grandmother prepare it for New Year’s gatherings in Hilo. It always felt like an older generation kind of thing, but it is fun to put an assortment of special items together to share with family and friends. I hope that the new year is filled with lots of joy, happiness, good health and prosperity for you and your family! Thank you for sharing your life with all of us😍
