You do very good work...but no offence when I say when your knurling and drilling that I've seen you should be using oil especially when knurling helps flush the the small swarf chips away so it doesn't recut the chips into the work..

I went through the same process for my EMCO Compact 5 CNC Chuck, except, Soft jaws are not available for these Chucks, so i made them myself.. having a CNC Mill greatly helps. So i measured the original jaws, drew them in CAD, and milled new jaws from 1.2510 steel. i milled a raised "Cross" on top, so i only have to mill a cross in the topjaws, which is way easier.. I too Faced the new Jaws in the lathe, before milling the locating features, then drilled and tapped the holes. the top jaws were also turned to the same height, after milling the cross and drilling the holes, and i now can clamp very delicate parts, like watchcase backs on only .8 mm, works a treat!.. What's also Cool, For working with Hexbar, you can Mill a hex in the jaws, to firmly grab it

Hi and thanks for your comment! That sounds really cool. You have an Emco Compact 5 CNC? Guess, who too since a few weeks... It will be official soon :) Do you have pictures or a documentation of your chuck build? Sounds really interesting. Would like to see how you did it.

That's exactly why I've decided to budget 3 times the original amount for my first lathe, i.e. something closer to 1800 USD.

I'm looking into adding bushings for my the spindle of my chinese drill press. So that the spindle doesn't slide directly in the casting bores? Any tips from you? Any chance I'de get a matching internal 40 mm diameter cylinder off the shelf somehow? I'm intending to enlarge the casting bores by hand.

I've come to the conclusion the spacing on the banjo differs between mini lathes. The distance between the main gear and secondary gear means they are too far away to mesh using any combination of gear sizes. I think i can file enough out to make them fit but I'm going to make a new banjo specifically for fine feeds that will clamp to the lathe around the leadscrew housing. Will make adjustment easier.

An excellent job sir! The bearings were very poor quality. Almost no quality control by the manufacturer whatsoever. I thought Chinese quality control was getting better, but in this factories case, non existent. I think I would have sourced bearings from a quality brand would have paid for itself.

Really nice work. Your obviously running a VFD with RS485 interfacing - why bother with the electro mechanical switchgear that you made? A discrete 24v FWD/OFF/REV with pot driven speed control on the apron is far easier and more convenient(albeit both options are.vast overkill on an 18" screw cutting lathe). BTW Carriage mounted motor control was only popularly adopted(1960s).when discrete electronics. we're not available and manufacturer's wanted to do away with expensive mechanical clutches... Don't get stuck in the perception trap ie. trapped by old thinking/ technologies. Even better, try a footpeddle control - intuitive and natural in feel... and with emergency stop functionality too!

I would have started with Cobalt hss round stock. hss allows a larger cutting angle, so less force and less chatter.

I do love you channel, and you get SO much right and great advice, just pretty please stop referring to WD40 as oil... or in fact using it in place of oil on assemblies. That is exactly what it is not. It's an oil/water displacer, and completely evaporates after a while, leaving nothing oil like behind. Adding it in place of an actual oil is no better than having nothing there. A google search on the topic will educate you a lot better than i can, it's commonly misused and misdescribed by a great many mechanics and engineers who just repeat what they've heard, so I don't blame you lol :)

You know this would be very handy for trimming bullet jackets or copper tubing to same length. I wasn't aware such chucks existed but you could use a wooden dowel to insert and remove.

You do a good job without a milling machine or bandsaw. Add a wide chamfer to end of threads for more clearance at the cross slide.
