Just got back from NOLA! The architecture is extraordinary especially the stories it reveals from the Garden district mansions to the classical law buildings and shot gun houses you covered. A better way to consider the Victorians, and Edwardians that followed, is that they’re so fancy because they could be. They were cheap to build. Yes, no power tools were used but the new “balloon” construction, along with machine made nails sold cheaply by the pound, cut down drastically on the number of skilled craftsmen that weee needed to build a house, and most of the decorations, mass produced and available through builders catalogues, were cheap as well. A victorian is over wrought, encrusted in detail. Lots of little stuff. An Edwardian is more opulent, less but more elegant and larger decorations. An Edwardian has more and larger curved glass bays, although the technology for them is Victorian. A Victorian has a tower, an Edwardian a turret, turrets have flat hidden roofs, towers have “witches cap” pointed ones. Early Vics, (1860s-70s) Italianates, have classical Greco-Roman decorative elements and bays with slanted sides. Stick style (1880s) have a more hand carved or cottages look, and square or right-angle bays. Both have false fronts, while the last Vics, Queen Annes, have no false fronts, you can see the steep pitch of the roof line.

Decades ago, San Francisco was the most beautiful city in America. And today, if you stand back, way back, you can still see the rolling hills, the bridge, Alcatraz, the cable cars and think it's still okay. But it isn't. The politicians have allowed the city to fall into the hands of lawlessness, crime, and drugs, all the while looking in the other direction. What a sad statement of a once beautiful city. If you visit, lock everything up. It's still beautiful while looking out the window from the 15th floor of your hotel. Enjoy.
