When i was pursuing music i played this with an orchestra i was principal bass. I think i made the correct choice to stop taking it serious and do a different carreer. This is not good. The bass playing is dorky and gut strings sound bad on bass. No objective rating system. Good riddance

@@harukokorneel6585 I bought a g-violone and am really enjoying it. I have already played with our gamba group - those low notes add so much to a consort. I may also buy a small UB in the future - I need the shorter string length. Keep recording please!

Love the sound but the quasi naive, modernistic art really doesn` t go in pair to reflect this beautiful, so-fine and complex piece of Bach. They somewhat are complete opposites. I think the galery is more like Stockhausen if it was to be translated to a soundscape. Thank you for the recording, amazing instruments!

I agree with you, I don't like the weird modern environment. I think it's ugly, especially that distracting tall sculpture between the musicians. It doesn't compliment the beautiful Baroque music.

".....and it's almost inevitable that you will touch more than one string, even if you try, otherwise you have to play so carefully that there's no musical content left. So if you dig, in if you really play, you're going to touch more than one string and usually in the solo pieces that's intended or at least it's allowed. In Ensemble music it can be a problem that you have notes that don't fit in the chord, but these (solo) pieces are so well written that Who cares?" Bravo! Well said, Korneel! 😊

The most enlightening performance I did was a Bach B minor mass, me on my bass and a violone player. We both observed how some passages fit one instrument better than the other, be it sound or comfort to execute the passage and we decided accordingly what to play or not depending on what we thought suited the instruments, the soloists and the music ...I have no doubt that these instruments played concerts together as life is not so clear cut. Thank you so much for these videos and sharing your knowledge.

Hi, thanks for asking! The Sperger Project is alive and kicking. Benedict Zierbogel and Isaline Leloup have already made a contribution by recording concertos 9 and 18, in the meantime our Duo has studied concertos 1 till 6, with number 5 slated for recording very soon. A number of little try-out concerts is planned for early 2022. Next year will hopefully see quite some activity, after all the covid-setbacks. Fingers crossed (or un-crossed. Even in Viennese Tuning it's hard to play with crossed fingers). All the best!

Awfully kind of you... thanks a lot! In "Ancient Music" there is often a lot of musical humor. We don't always "get it", maybe because sometimes we take Classical Music too seriously. But composers and musicians liked this kind of thing, like quoting a few bars of another piece. All the best!

Thank you. Dittersdorf's two concertos are indeed for Viennese Tuning. They're not necessarily much easier in this tuning, though. If you would like to read more about Ditters, you can consult my book "Meta Hodos" on viennese-tuning.com (Method). All the best!

So if you did not have the low 16ft string, the bass would have the compass of a cello? Beautiful playing and the music is amazing! I would like to learn this piece eventually!
@johannsperger4679
@johannsperger4679 3 жыл бұрын
Hello again Shrish! Indeed, the 4-string version in this case would have the compass of the cello. Sperger used -at least in the latter part of his career as a bass soloist- a four-string bass. You can see that from the scores. The soloist was expected to play all the Tutti parts as well (something we don't do anymore, which is a great pity), but when the Tutti bass part goes too low, the solo bass pauses or plays an octave higher. Since we're only two players here, i prefer to be able to play the Tutti bass parts in their complete ambitus, so i use a five-string bass. The music is indeed amazing. Right now we've run through concertos 1 - 5, we hope to do the first nine concertos this year, and the second nine next year. It's fascinating to play them in chronological order because you see the evolution so clearly. Contrary to received "wisdom" (mostly from people who have never played his pieces), Sperger's music is rich, varied, surprising, and moving. If you want to play this particular one, you will need a Viennese-tuned bass. Most of Sperger's work is impossible to play well on a modern bass, unless you change it substantially (octaves, harmonics, double stops, articulations...). As a result, it sounds a bit uninteresting, un-exciting. But if you go all the way, it can sound very surprising, on a par with the best pieces out there. Good luck, enjoy music, enjoy life !

Something seems to have gone wrong with my first reply, sorry. To answer your question briefly, indeed the instrument in this case has the same lower limit as the cello, except for the fifth string which i only use in the Tuttis. In any case, the Viennese bass in its four-string version and in its standard tuning only goes down to low A, which is just a minor third below the cello. If you want to play this concerto, you will need Viennese tuning in F Major i guess, because many passages are impossible on the modern bass. All the best!
