The bridge at New Egypt road was a steel thru girder structure. I have a picture of it brand new, it shows up in the Bethlehem Steel 1951 film, The Open Road, and I remember taking pictures of the bridge many times before its demolition

Very informative video. On my family vacations in the early-mid 60s I remember going through Sideling Hill Tunnel? It was one lane in each direction. I believe that was one of the tunnels bypassed in the 70s??!!

Here in southeastern Pennsylvania we don't hear much about the mountains unless we are referring to North Hampton and it's mountainous counties much of which comprises the Poconos. There must be several mountainous counties in Western Pa. that I know of.. Westmoreland county Greensburg in fact where a former female fling took me from our hometown to Greensburg to visit her cousin who was getting married to a nice young lady from Kittaning I believe. I remember how the steeply inclined stairs acted to have my breath fit to be tied but I loved the feeling of an alternative Pennsylvania experience in such a hilly zone

I notice that the bypass goes ON TOP of the Sideling Hill tunnel. If one were to, heading eastbound, pull over and look over the side, would you be able to see the tunnel and old turnpike?
@CruisingPittsburgh Жыл бұрын
That is a good question. And although I am never actually tried to do that myself, my guess is probably not. First, the tunnel portal is about a thousand feet or so from the current highway, and at a much lower level. And the second point is that there is all those trees and other forms of vegetation that would likely obstruct your view. Of course don't forget, you would need to stop at just the right place on the current highway, which I'm sure would be very hard to determine. I can tell you one thing for sure, if you stand outside the old east portal, no matter how spooky it may look, you will definitely hear the noise of the current turnpike traffic. Contrast that to the West Portal, where everything seems so quiet!

I argue that if US 219's expressway were to be extended all the way south into Maryland and connect with I-68, maybe sign it as I-168 instead! It would be cool to not only create I-68's first auxiliary highway ever, but also to have it come into Pennsylvania where I-68 doesn't even have any pavement. Just my opinion though.
@CruisingPittsburgh Жыл бұрын
Good points indeed. In fact when I was making the videos I considered the connection to I-68. The reason why I settled on a designation of I-X70 is because I-70 is one of the major interstates and also one of the longest. Plus I-70 would sit approximately in the middle of the new interstate highway here. But a designation of I-X68 is certainly an idea worth considering. Either one would certainly be better than giving it a boring old designation like US 219.

Thanks for the video of Boswell. I grew up in Somerset County and my family lived in Boswell from 1961 to 67. My Brother and I were the town paperboys. The Catholic church in your video was on my route as the Priest, who lived in the building next to the church, received a paper. I remember how he could sit outside and be smoking a cigar and having a drink. Fro

Thanks. If I was buying a house in Westmoreland County, where would you suggest?
@CruisingPittsburgh2 жыл бұрын
In regards to Westmoreland county, it all depends on what your needs and desires are. The county is one of the biggest in area (1,036 sq mi) yet not so big in population (about 350,000). It includes the depressed rust belt town of Monessen; as well as thriving modern suburbs like Murrysville; as well as some of the most rural, scenic, and mountainous areas - particularly towards the east. There is a lot of wealth in some areas particularly in the region around Ligonier. I will point out that a short stretch of the Youghiogheny River and the GAP trail runs thru the county including at West Newton. And this area along the GAP trail in and around West Newton provides an opportunity to rent rooms to trail users such as on airbnb.

@CruisingPittsburgh2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the 2020 population was only 37 or 38. Yet this is a very small boro with an area of .50 sq. miles with .42 sq. miles of land. So this is more than 88 people per sq. mile. And in the summer and on weekends this place bustles with tourists. And every house in this town is a potential investment for rent on sites such as airbnb.

That I do not know. I would certainly hope so; Inclusivity and diversity is beneficial after all. But I do know a lot of Hispanics live today in the Beechview neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

I'm orginally from windber. Not many Hispanics in Windber and I'm sure at one point one would face some racism. But most people are going to be decent. The slightly larger small city of Johnstown (8 miles away) does have some Hispanics, mostly Puerto Ricans ( as a child I only knew one Hispanic person who lived in Windber, she was of Mexican decent, made traditional Mexican food out of her home which my parents sometimes bought).
