I think a lot of people don't consider voice and tone when they talk about the ending. On paper, the ending is fine, not groundbreaking, but fine, however, in practice I feel the whole thing came off quite pretentious and nasty. The attitude of the developers seems to be that they are indignant of their audience and have ruined the canon as punishment. This is because they depict the audience of danganronpa on the text like the audience in the Truman show, and then extrapolate that we are the same as those fans when we know we're playing a game that doesn't hurt anyone. They also imply that we're insatiable super fans, and that everyone just cant get enough of Danganronpa, and people all over the world are obsessed with it when it's not that deep bro, its an anime VN, get over yourself. That to me, ruins the ending, the idea isn't that smart to begin with (I've always said the Truman Show exists, btw, and did it first and better, and even recently , squid game did the format much better) and if they hate the fans then they didn't have to make the game and take my money. They wanted to have their cake (upsetting the fans) and eat it too (cash in on a final game). I guess it comes down to this: do you think the fans were really that obsessed with Danganronpa that the creators felt they had to hold up a mirror to that obsession and masterfully deconstruct the genre? Or do you think the creators were a little sore that they'd peaked with Danganronpa and couldn't ever make something else as popular so they ruined it? I think your answer to that question might affect how you view the ending.

I'm very late but I want to add the note on Mikan's execution while it seems weird and out of place it matches monokuma's twisted personality it's designed specifically to mess with Mikan despite her obsession with despair
@1m_N0t_CrAzY11 күн бұрын
I also wanna add that the unrealistic way in which she is killed is in my opinion monokuma pulling back the curtain and tell the viewers that hes not limited to real life limitations, honestly its nice how every once in a while the big twist at the end is hinted at It could be executed better i still see it as a hey player you still think this isnt a game?
@1m_N0t_CrAzY11 күн бұрын
So you didnt really talk us through the execution? Im assuming cause of death is heart attack from stressing over hallucinations. Which is still kinda lame im not gonna lie Im not gonna say that mikan being shot into space is better but i still feel like theres a better way to kill mikan I do see the point to making fake Mikan go through the exe instead of remnant Mikan But i will make the argument that watching someone you thought was your friend happily accepts their death especially someone like mikan would spread despair and possibly mistrust through the group because if the timid girl was actually insane whats that mean for the rest of us.

I tend to be very, very wary of sexual assault in media. It is very easy for it to either be used as torture porn, or just plain porn. Lingering on the event, fetishising it, describing the character who experienced it (often a woman, and/or a child) somehow "dirtied" or "robbed of their purity", or whatever else. Mouthwashing was remarkably tactful with its depiction of the victim, the abuser, the bystanders (be they unaware or willfully ignorant), and the aftermath. What gets me is that James ("Jimmy" is what you call a friend, and James Mouthwashing is no friend of mine.) isn't "obviously" evil. He's mean, he looks a little unkempt and pathetic, he struggles to really talk like a normal person to anyone but his friend. He is a human being. And that's what gets me. My abusers were also human beings, no matter how much I hate them. In a way, they are just people. Someone who knows them might never even suspect they're capable of hurting someone. Might even try to defend them. James is _tormented_ by what he got Daisuke to do, what Swansea told him, and what he did to Curly and the ship. But then Anya, in his mind, shows up either only as a womb, a source of the monster that torments him (the burden of responsibility for the child), or Polle, a representation of the cold corporate space crushing them. And also a horse. All she is to him, is either a burden, a fleshy hole, or an animal, and boy, if that doesn't demonstrate how he - and unfortunately, a lot more people than I wish - views her, if not just women as a whole. And yet, the monsters chasing you in his mind, his fear of responsibility, the way he twists and mars Curly into some frightening _thing,_ rather than a person, show his hideous humanity. You _wish_ Mouthwashing had an alien monster on the ship, just so it would murk the bastard.

Wholly agree with all of this. It’s a level of nuance I’ve stopped expecting from most portrayals, and it’s very good. I also hope you’re safe from your own abusers now 💚

It's great to hear about this game from you! Great analysis, as always! I especially liked the idea that not acknowledging our worst moments makes us monsters. The characters in this game all feel real and believeable, and it's clear WHY each person does what they do, even if their actions are misguided. There's certainly a lot to discuss, but I think you did a very good job :)

One theme that I find really compelling in Mouthwashing is capitalism and how it has adverse effects on those who partake in it, whether forced to or not. In the story, Pony Express is almost its own character and we can surmise a lot about them through the in-game environment. One detail that sticks out is the posters found about the ship. PE doesn’t let them sleep for more than 5 hours, docks their pay at any chance, and places all their blame on the employees instead of on the company. It’s a cold and callous entity, treating their employees as mindless working robots, which is ironic considering they’re the only company left with human workers. The height of PE’s ruthlessness is seen when the entire crew gets laid off mid-journey. They offer no safety nets and wash their hands clean of their ex-employees. Curly is affected by capitalism through his unfulfilling job. Logistically, he should be happy. He pretty much won at capitalism. He has a good job, a high position, and presumable high pay. However, none of that makes him happy. The reason why he can’t bring himself to quit or switch jobs is because he can’t bring himself to leave behind the safety of his work. Jimmy is on the bottom. There are lines that suggest he hasn’t had the best life. He’s clawing his way up through the corporate ladder, just as society tells him is the right thing to do. Well, at least that’s what he thinks. Curly most likely helped him. That help has probably left Jimmy feeling even more emasculated and envious, growing his resentment and leading to him lashing out at Curly once he’s vulnerable. I have more to add but this is getting a little long😭😭 Oh and btw great vid as always ^w^

I've seen people call this "corporate horror" which I love as a specific subgenre. I am obsessed with this game. It's a short game but such a RICH text, from the actual dialog to the stuff on the walls to things like the board game in the lounge changing state to reflect the state of its players.

Yes to ALL of this!! I really wanted to talk about Pony Express and how it dehumanizes the crew (as capitalism is wont to do) but ended up leaving that on the cutting room floor :’) So yes!! Completely agree!!

I think theres an issue with the daily-infection thing. If it infected mikan later than the disease and rule was established, then people would notice if it skipped a day, immediately putting more suspicion on her as a nurse with immunity. I suggest that Mikan got sick FIRST, but due to being so used to hiding her hurt from abuse and her changed state of mind it was unnoticed to the others. Monokuma thinks this shit is funny so he doesn't say anything. The day AFTER is when Komaeda contracts it (Perhaps the night before there was a small conversation in the group where he couldve contracted it from her). Due to his already bad health state he immediately collapses from it, and then everyone learns about it. Monokuma leaves out that 2 people are already infected to make things more interesting, so the order of disease could be another point of argument in the class trial, especially if mikans meek nature is used as an argument on why it cant be her even with the scalpel knowledge Also, this may be an unpopular take but I think Mikan being uncomfortably sexual can be written and done well if the authors had respect for her.... Hypersexuality as a trauma response from the peer abuse and it being something she deliberately tries to appeal to to get Some type of validation and affection by others makes sense i think. It's just not handled well but the idea itself isn't inappropriate imo

I don't get the hate for this chapter. Chapter 2 was far, FAR worse. The only good thing to come out of Chapter 2 was Fuyuhiko's character arc. As for your changes, tbh I don't like them. 1. Adding a record function gets rid of Mikan's alibi. Literally the first thing I said when I first saw the body announcement was, "Well, I know it's not Mikan." It made for a fun twist when it's revealed the footage was fake and recorded elsewhere. 2. Hinting at a scalpel makes the killer makes the killer too obvious. I'll overlook that she's not a surgeon because they're pretty broad with what they mean when they call her a nurse. 3. Hiyoko is literally the perfect person for Mikan to kill. I do agree it's kind of lackluster though. Maybe she should have been a bit more brutal with Hiyoko. Show her to have multiple stab wounds or something. 4. Mikan can't be "cured." Her disease was remembering herself to be a Remnant of Despair. Sure, Nagito can stop lying, Akane can stop crying and Ibuki could have stopped being guillible. But how is Mikan to forget? It wouldn't make sense for her to lose her memory again. The Future Foundation could wipe their memories when putting them inside the Neo World Program, but Monokuma isn't able to just make people forget things. I can agree with you that I am not a fan of her execution, but I think all of the other suggested changes take away from the case.

If not fanservice scenes and *that* minigame with Komaru, Kotoko's potrayal would be so good, honestly. As a traumatized child, she had to grow up mentally faster, same as the others, especially Nagisa and Monaca; breaks down from trigger word; is bitter nobody saved her; and what I find the most interesting - expresses hypersехuаl behaviour. In media, most of C/SA victims express repulsed behaviour and bc of it hуреrsехual behaviour is stigmatized and seen as abnormal, when it's normal for a victim of C/SA, as well as repulsion *and* as well as a person having periods of being hyper and repulsed. Kotoko could've been an amazing potrayal of hуреrsехuаl SA'd kid and she is, especially after Ch.3, but if course writers had to ruin it

While I agree with some points, it’s weird you bring up Ai: The Somnium File as a game you enjoy as if the main character wasn’t sex incarnate, and was extremely weird towards a highschooler, and even after learning she was a sort of step daughter to him, near the end of the game, he literally thinks he’s about to receive a kiss from her… idk at least in this game it seems that they genuinely loved each other, if they only really cared about their bodies, they wouldn’t bother uploading the memories they had of them, also I assume they would wait until they not only regained their memories but were old enough again, idk I feel there is a large portion of this video that could have been cut out cause it’s just a bunch of nitpicking
@thetiniestleaf2 ай бұрын
I think this is a fair point! And while I debated keeping our nitpicks in this video, I do feel that they were something that affected my opinion when taking it all into account. Sort of a “on its own it’s not a big deal, but counted up it irritated me”. Now as for AITSF, I understand the confusion! I’ll try to explain it the best I can, but it has been a while so forgive me if my details are muddied. (Spoilers below) If I were to unpack AITSF in a longer review, I would criticize the weird flirting that Date has regarding Iris as that also makes me uncomfortable. But they didn’t happen frequently enough that it “became” Date’s character for me, and Date’s sex drive is frequently lampshaded discussed as being weird and (at times) a hinderance. And perhaps I’m misremembering, but I don’t remember him flirting with her after he got all his memories back and remembered he was literally in a different body. Could be mistaken, but that’s my memory of it. Like I said in the video, I don’t inherently have a problem with sexy characters OR sex-obsessed ones. It sorta depends on the surrounding context. It also helps that Iris is canonically 18 - so while still offputting that she’s a high schooler, she is unambiguously an adult and Date more or less settles into a relationship with her mom afterwards, so that helps makes me more comfortable. As far as the 13 sentinels couples go and uploading their memories into their bodies being a sign of love… I think that’s just going to have to be a point we disagree on based on personal taste. I can’t imagine watching a child grow up with the thought that they’ll couple up when they’re legal. It gives very Jacob Black vibes from Twilight. Either way, I appreciate your feedback! Thanks for watching 💚
@Andorzsiac2 ай бұрын
@ True enough, but for me it is icky since Iris states she just turned 18, so while yes it is okay legality wise, morally it is icky, also I agree wholeheartedly that Ida should not have had a happy ending, and should have stayed dead, also the reason a good majority of these characters start with or have stereotypical characteristics is cause it’s done so on purpose since before the game starts they are technically just ordinary students, I think it’s hammered especially hard in the beginning of Ioris story with her running with a toast in her mouth and bumping into her crush, which is textbook anime trope, also the reason Inaba has a different name and appearance would be to hide from Ida

I feel like I would keep Ibuki as the victim but replace Akane because she was bland. (Sonia slaps Kazuichi after Gundham’s death) I feel like Mikan had potential to be antagonist and would’ve made Ibuki murder Akane and then make her commit suicide. She’d be an antagonist around the theme of revenge and fury if she murders someone without the disease. I can imagine her dying in chapter 5.
