Have you done further tests of the relative sharpness of the slide films? Recently I did shoot both E100 and Velvia 50, albeit with different cameras (both have given me very sharp results before). In this case E100 looked slightly sharper in the scans, so the opposite of what you mention here. The reason why I noticed was because one of the E100 images popped at me as one of the sharpest 35mm images I have ever shot. Not very scientific I know but I was just wondering what you have seen after making this video.

I grew up in Ilulissat and I have only very good memories from there and it was the times before internet so we were always outdoor playing. Also sailing in midnight sun in the summer. That blue building you are so find of and took good time to photograph is unfortunately not a repair shop. This must be the absolute highlight of its lifetime 😂 The very old houses that don’t have sewers and thus not modern toilets have instead a metal bucket. These buckets are collected a couple of times a week by workers and the content is emptied in the sea from that building. Now you know 😂

Nice, liquid electric tape was my first thought but I decided to look to youtube to see what everyone else was trying, happy to see this confirmation.

Use Ilford xp2+ 400 , made for c41 developer , ei250 on a bright sunny day, ei 400 on a sunny day with soft shadows, ei640 on a dull overcast day. Send it to any lab for developing. The negatives scan really well.

I was wondering if you ever did retry e100 vs provia to see if the e100 is still less sharp?
@ChrisDarnell23 күн бұрын
Hi Philip, I never did run another side-by-side test (thanks for the reminder, I still might do that), although I have shot E100 a handful more times in other situations and never noticed any further issues with achieving sharp images. My leading theory is that I have a defective film back on the 6x6, although I need to do more tests to prove that out.

I understand the result of front camera tilt, shift movements. When does a scene require rear camera movements that can’t be achieved with front camera movements?
@ChrisDarnell23 күн бұрын
For the most part you’re absolutely right, the same results can be achieved using front movements, although it’s nice sometimes to have the option of both. The one difference that comes to mind is the distortion you can get with heavy rear tilt. By tilting the film plane closer/further away from the lens you can selectively change the magnification factor and exaggerate or minimize the foreground/background for example, which is different than what you get by applying front tilt. Most cameras have at least rear base tilt that will accomplish this though, a monorail camera is certainly not necessary.
@Film_Fog20 күн бұрын
Thank you for explaining. To be honest, i can’t visualise that scenario in my mind. I guess if you what a topic your next video, rear tilt, swing and shift that can’t be achieved with front camera movements would be of great interest to many 35mm photographers that have never used a wonderful view camera. I appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. I’m sure it’s not easy.

1. Which lenses did you carry in your 4x5 inch kit? 2. Did you need or use front and/or back camera movements? 3. How would a similar trip with a medium format camera with normal and wide-angle lenses compare to your trip with a 4x5 inch large format camera with normal and wide-angle lenses?
@ChrisDarnellАй бұрын
These days were pretty early in my experience with large format, and if I remember right the only lens I had for my kit at the time was my 180mm f/5.6. I almost always end up using at least a touch of front tilt unless there's nothing very close to the camera in the foreground, apologies if I fail to mention that as I've been trying to be better at covering that in the videos. I don't remember needing to use too drastic of movements, nothing that a medium format camera couldn't handle with the increased depth of field compared to large format anyway. I think medium format with normal and wide lenses would do great in Bryce. I've returned a few times with various additional lenses and camera systems and I've found ways to make use of any focal length I've had with me - I've shot tight compositions of details with long lenses, medium stuff with normal lenses, and plenty of grand scenics and shots amongst the hoodoos with wide angle lenses. If you're willing to hike down the trails away from the main viewpoints and keep an open mind I think you can find something with any system and lens you have, the park seems to have it all. Hope that helps!

I just came across your Channel (Apr 2024), and the first video I watched was Part I of these. This has gotten my interest because I currently use Phase One digital backs with my Phase One XF, but I want to start using B&W film for a few projects (I have older Mamiya 645 lenses, and a 120/220 film back, just need a 645 AFD body). My original thought was to get T-Max, but when I searched B&W comparisons for fashion photography, I saw your Part I. While I have not searched the rest of your Channel, it would be good to know if you, or any of the more experienced subscribers here have a definitive opinion on a 100 ISO B&W 120-film that works bests for Commerical artistic portraits, in a fashion scene (odd request I know). Either way, I am Subscribed now, and looking forward to more of your content.

For me, perhaps the main reason to consider large format would be that it would allow me to more cost effectively obtain exceptionally good photos, as a very occasional shooter. If I were a frequent shooter, a good quality digital might make more sense. Another reason might be for the "movements".

I found that if you choose TMax films you should use TMax developers. D76 was not designed for tabular grain films.

I picked up a Toyo View 45G yesterday and now going through KZbin for videos. I stumble upon it randomly at a camera shop that I have not frequent in awhile and it was sitting there, timing cannot be more perfect since I started looking for on on eBay three days ago. Mine comes with a long rail, I do like your short rail setup, but those 3D print lock ring does look handy so I can leave the trunk behind if I choose to do so.

This is one of the most useful demonstrations I have seen related to film photograph processing. Dust is the nemesis of analog photography. I have spent many a tedious sessions removing dust in post processing. This will no doubt make my life much easier. Good job...and thanks!

A+ video! Thanks so much for sharing camera settings! If you don't mind, how many batteries did you bring for your camera, and how long did each one last in the cold?
@ChrisDarnell5 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! On this trip, shooting with the Canon 5Dmk4, I brought five batteries total, one in the camera and four spares. Typically I'd say I went through around two or three batteries a day, and I don't really remember them being overly affected by the cold. It stayed in the 20's and 30's (F) the whole time we were there, so I'm sure that would have been a different story if the temperatures had been colder. Hope that helps!
