Been using the xs20 for over a year and it the best travel companion. Finally started rigging it out for video and it’s been a fun camera to shoot with.

Why is the Output Gamma in your CST set to Rec.709-A instead of Gamma 2.2/2.4? I'm wondering what the Output Color Space is in your Project Settings, thanks!

The Fairchild dual gain 4.6k sensor was the only Blackmagic camera that got Netflix approved until recently and only after OLPF for the 12k sensor was introduced.

Would love an explanation as to why you switch to linear and adjust with gain as opposed to using the global wheel in the HDR palette. I’m still new so if I sound dumb that’s why lol

“Cinema camera gray market” Are you sure you know what that means? Because you can this camera without going on the gray market. I think you mean the “used market.”

it’s funny how you didn’t specify which ISO each camera was set at when comparing latitude for all cameras and that makes the video so pointless especially in that particular comparison part. Comparing them with terms like “stops” and “same exposure” doesn’t say the full story. At no point during your “latitude test” portion of the video you showed iso numbers for each camera (c400,fx30,G2) and their individual “-1,-2,-3” stops. Of course you could come back and say ISO numbers that would fit your narrative so you won’t look like a fool, despite the lack of actual retrospective proof. Or you could say that ISO remained unchanged and that you only altered shutter angle to achieve the similar exposures. Literally none of your audience have any proof of all cameras being set at their highest DR iso setting (eg 800) throughout the entire latitude push. That makes your video extremely biased and tarnishes your credibility in my eyes and most other professionals who can see through the BS. And the irony of calling the DR on the C400 “disappointing” when they shot the Dr House Finale on a Canon 5D Mark II yet y’all talk about DR in 2025 as if it’s a project breaker for professionals. Once I’ve had the chance to compare low light footage shoot at the same event with 2 different cameras (R5C and FX3) and the noise on the R5C was actually finer and less noticeable on smaller screens than the FX3 who had blotchier and bigger grains that were more visible on an iPhone display.

Both cameras were set to their lowest native iso, friend. No need to get your toga in a twist
@costinvaly1Күн бұрын
@ that’s a crucial detail that shouldn’t have been left out from the video, especially if you’re trying to prove a point. Objectivity is crucial and keeping iso values “internal” in your video comparison makes the test extremely subjective and even misleading. I could literally take the same cameras and compensate exposures by altering iso values then not claiming at all (like you did) which camera was set to which iso during each “-1,-2,-3” stop. You left out the most crucial spec during your test. And don’t give me the “it’s common sense, of course all cameras were set to their lowest base iso”.
@jakehayden998Күн бұрын
Sorry that was confusing for you. For future reference- Anytime I do a latitude test (unless specified otherwise) I will always be recording in the lowest native iso

color science always felt like some snake oil marketing tactic.. with such cameras it's almost never happens that the footage will be used AS IS. Filmmakers (not you) specially the old ones should know that camera is just a data capturing machine. You will always manipulate data to reach YOUR own look/vision/mood.

For canon raw, you need to turn “sharpness” in the RAW tab to 0 for the weird-ass noise pattern to go away. The default “sharpness” value is 10 and it doesn’t play well at all with noise reduction. :/ I discovered this when playing with some R5ii footage I found online.

I’ve had the C400 since the release, and it is amazing. I have had no issues, but I don’t shoot in raw that often. I had an FX9 before it, and this is easily on par with that camera and beats it in many aspects.

The cameras you used to take a loan for can be had for 2k-3k. It's definitely an interesting time for shopping. Especially since we're deep in diminishing returns country with the new stuff if you can see through the marketing.

Great video!! Thanks! We are about to make a narrative feature. But we can't really decide what to sell for 'exclusive' cinema camera. And no, we have no budget for an arri ;-) . If you should go making a movie on a small budget, what camera and what lens would you use to have the most cinematic nice roll off picture? (red, sony, canon...?)Thank you very much for the info!!
