My advice: as a wannabe 1) A cozy game cannot have combat 2) develop stuff ur passionate about even if its a big idea 3) 3d is better, 2d is over saturated 4) programmers should make more, its not a game without code 5) yes stardew valley is over used as inspro 6) puzzle platformers are lit, get good 7) yes, looking good is a huge part 8) nah not in my experience, everyone starts somewhere

Just a few minutes in, I'm reminded that I really should finish playing *VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action* and then give *Coffee Talk* a try. These types of games are neat and a good way to present a cast of cool characters with their own little stories.

Totally agree that the artists and writers should be paid more roughly the same as the majority of the programmers, speaking as a programmer but not game dev. There will always be programmers that will be making significantly more simply because they are working on things that are much more valuable to the project, but honestly everyone working on the games should be paid a comfortable living salary. And while we're at it, better work conditions and contracts, too. Unionize, people

Glad I stumbled across this. Subscribed. I can't believe you're skilled in art and programming. But I wanted to say, as a game design student, your design knowledge is really impressive. You keep the scope small, the game is very marketable and simple and accessible. And well done for doing some playtesting.

I think it’s bcuz cozy is not a genre yet, and ppl are using that way, a game about murder could be cozy to me as long as it’s not making me anxious or I’m using it to wind down at the end of the day

Hot take, everyone on the development team should get paid the same amount. It's a team effort and nothing works unless it all works. As a programmer I agree that it can be incredibly difficult to build systems that are scalable, extensible, and maintainable but there are games out there with 💩code but you would never know because the final solution works. The caveat to this is game engine programmers. This is a different skill set and isn't about a specific project, it's more of a long term investment for a studio

Hot take: Emily should make KZbin videos more often! : ) Great video. I agree with most of your takes. Regarding programmer compensation, I would say that this is happens because of the demand for programmers in other industries outside of game dev (startups, bigtech, enterprises, consulting, etc.).

When it comes to game art it only needs to be 2 things: consistent and coherent. Anything else goes.

I've been/am a programmer AND I've been a designer, and I've also worked in tech support, print design, sales, repair etc for 20 years bow. I think someone is a somewhat arrogant programmer if they think they deserve to be paid more than a designer or writer at all given times. Many designers and writers also went through University too so comparison of skills and cost of getting to where they currently are wll always vary on a per person basis. Design takes a lot of effort, thought, experience, understanding of user psychology and accessibility when its done well. Most programmers I know don't think about those things in that way. A lot, unless they are extremely experienced and senior, follow a lot of design and tasks assigned to them by a project manager. They solve programming problems but you have design problems with every project, some thought about long before a piece of code ever gets written.. Its the same with writing. A good writer only becomes a good writer through years of experience and requires a degree of consistency and attention to detail to make sure explicit themes are followed, logic is consistent, and implied narratives are not forgotten. Also all of the above is highly dependant on the level of complexity of any given build, design or writing. Its never as clear as X employee inherently better than Y employee and therefore deserves more pay.

I think its fair to say you're not starting with your dream game if you're prototyping a brunch of different games and then combining them. For all intents and purposes this is in the spirit of "Don't Start with your dream game". If you prototype anything prior to making your game its basically like you created an unreleased game. If you went straight into making one big game without prototyping then thats been proven to not work for the majority of people. Its also a reason a lot of studios die because they scale up too quickly.

I guess I’ll agree in terms of junior levels of programmers and designers should be paid around the same but i feel the difference starts be more applicable with more senior roles and when the problem space gets more complex. Like for programmers building game development tools that would then better enable designers and artist I feel like should get compensated more because they aren’t only working on game playing but also building out the tools to support the other disciplines

I feel like the term “cozy games” shouldn’t be a certain genre or a certain type of art style or even aesthetics. To me a cozy game is any style of game that helps you relax after a long day of work or school. What may be cozy to one person, might not be cozy to another. That’s why the term varies to me.
@slimesplash_wiz
@slimesplash_wiz 5 күн бұрын
it's a weird term because it doesn't mean much, it's true that different people will find different games cozy and relaxing, but that means that the term can be applied literally to all games ever?

Loved this vid :) made for good discussions. Totally agree with the stardew take, like we should be trying to be unique enough, and maybe people will see the stardew influence on their own without it being mentioned. So what makes the new game special should be highlighted more

honestly, cozy games just means cute aesthetics and (mostly) nonviolent gameplay. i feel like cozy was never rlly a concrete way to categorize games so now its getting messy and as u said, games that r obviously not cozy r getting labeled as such just cus of their art style. great vid btw

My white hot take as someone who has actual training in both art and programming: making good art is harder than programming. When you're making games you can get away with bad programming anyway, can't hide bad art. If people were paid based on effort rather than demand I feel like artists should get paid more than most programmers lol.
@fartyfat6539

but if you're not an artist, you can still make a game. Maybe text-based, or you can use free assets online. On the other hand, if you can't program, there won't be any game.
@DeGandalf

As a programmer, I fully agree. But we live in a capitalistic society, so the only thing which effects the pay are supply and demand. And since most programmers leave game dev for better paying jobs there ironically aren't that many programmers comparatively. And if you're good at 3D modelling, then you're stuck at either game dev or animations, so they really don't have many better options.

Animators, definitely. Artists, depends on the genre.
@diamond8467
@diamond8467 5 күн бұрын
it very depends on the game, there are impressive games with not much coding, and there are games which require no art and have complex mechanics and there are games which have that equaly. For small, story-visual based games I agree with you. On the other side complex mechanically, multiplayer, mmo, payments with high security standards would not be possible with low programming knowledge. As a programmer for over 4 years, and having low art skills, i focus on mechanically complex games which do not require art but are nowhere easy to code.

"harder" is relative. Also, pay is not proportional to the difficulty of a task, but to the demand/supply ratio of the given position/skill

Such a fun vid!!❤ 1. 👍. I feel like if a game has cute characters it’s already labeled ‘cozy’ 2.Depends! I have 0 knowledge of coding so if I make a game it will most likely be pretty messy! But Ik some ppl that know how to code so their first game might be fun! 3.

I'm employed as a programmer and I agree that artists, writers, designers, etc, should be paid more or equal to programmers. But I think the problem comes from the high demand for programmers, so companies pay them more for that reason.
