for your first game, you got so much stuff right! -limited your scope and made a simple game -good time management -made your own art and music (that's so cool! a lot of beginner game devs use asset packs) -playtesting!!! (super important! and it was fun to see everyone's reactions) -left an extra day for exporting stuff in case something went wrong -focused on polish instead of adding too many features a simple concept executed really well, and congrats on the well deserved 29th place!! i would definitely love to see more game dev content on the channel, but maybe i am a bit biased because i am a game developer lol ^^

Dang, I was getting familiar vibe when you introduced yourself, the talented stephanie poetri joining the game dev space. You got a lot of points right for a first time gamedev, another commenter already points out the excellent things that you did for your first projects and you nailed it. You even got the right spirit, release first mentality despite the result, a lot of seasoned gamedev still struggled with that. I'm excited to see more gamedev content, also if you could share your workflow on how to make music for games that would be awesome, the short montage of you composing gets me going. Shout out from Indonesia #indopride 🇮🇩

WOW! Well done! Your concept was simple, but, well executed. You tried new things (not just the game-jam itself, but also new functions within your game) and you performed amazingly, especially for your first game and game jam. You should definitely be proud of yourself! It's really cool to see you pushing your limits and I'm looking forward to watching more of your content. Very inspiring! :)

I’ve worked on games for game jams and school projects, but seeing how your idea came from something simple into a polished submission made me rethink how I could go about doing game jams in the future. Also nice touch with writing your own music! I thought I’d be able to go all orchestral with my Epic Game Jam submission but definitely keeping it simple like this was the way to go
@dexlovesgames_dlg8 ай бұрын
headsup you can randomize color with code as well, on every canvasitem node, you can click "Visibility" and you'll see modulate is an option. If the base sprite is white, and you modulate, it will be exactly the color you modulate it to instead of white. Then if your base sprite has variation in brightness (differences to gray) and modulate it, you will get that color with the darker spots on the original sprite being the same hue, but darker. I think there's an argument to be made that your shadows should contain a little blue when you do this, so that your modulated shadows get a little slightly different color to them instead of just darker same color. Anyway this just seemed like something you would appreciate knowing about. Read up about modulate on the docs!

Releasing something "anything" is incredible, game jams are a great way to start because it has set parameters you need to work to. Also glad your petition worked :P

Oh my gosh. This is so cool? I had no idea that like, you could join a game jam as such an early point in your game dev journey! I'm hoping to make games some day, and learning you can make something so neat and cute so early on really helps to like, not be overwhelmed by the idea of it? I also saw your video on how you made a character creator! I'm subbing so I can see your game dev journey as it happens! PS: What's the name of the program you used to make the music? 👀
@MeniMenoHello7 ай бұрын
yes! game jams are a lot less scary when you realize its a win win situation! even if you dont get a super high score, you still made something. and thats better than nothing at all! and thanks for the sub!!! the music program I use is called Ableton Live, but it is quite pricy! I already have it for my main job, but there are tons of other great affordable options for more casual music making!
@shannonreed8227 ай бұрын
@@MeniMenoHello Game jams sound a lot like concept-based art contests where you keep the rights to your art! (I've been an artist for over 25 years, so that's where my referential understanding is strongest, ahaha!) Like, you get to make something with a lot of freedom, and people who might never have seen your art get to see it and give you feedback, but you also don't lose rights to it like a lot of corporate contests! And thank YOU for uploading your dev journey so far! Things like this *really* help people like myself who have low faith in themselves to see that even beginners can make fun things, and that the processes aren't as overwhelming early on as they might seem. I find videos like this to be genuinely invaluable because they make it clearer how accessible game dev really is! Ableton Live looks really high quality, so I am not surprised it's so pricy! Do you have any advice for finding a less pricy alternative for someone who wants to try out making music casually before devoting a lot of money to professional level software? I've tried to find things in the past, but my search results always come back with just these professional tier programs which cost multiple hundreds, so I'm clearly doing something incorrectly! Thank you for your time! I really appreciate it! :D
