This is amazing and so useful!! I love the way you break down your notes with the callouts, and can visualize everything and I think I'll give it a try your way. My notes are such a disaster 🥲🥲 Out of curiosity, do you have an Obsidian subscription? the main criticism (from Redditor's) is that you can't sync it across devices without subscribing and that the linking is a bit excessive (Frankly, kind of like the Zettelkasten method you mentioned). I'm not sure if it's needed. Can you share your opinion?

I’m preparing for my qualifying exams while also struggling with what I now know is ADHD and I ran across your earlier video on notetaking, which was super helpful. So I was really happy to see this walkthrough because the timing couldn’t be better! It also makes me feel less alone knowing there are others like me struggling through their PhD with adhd. Thank you for sharing your journey!

Good to hear you're doing well Sarah! And congrats on getting published. That's awesome. NVXIM is a bizarre story. Was a huge fan of Smallville and Battlestar Galactica when I was a kid and the head of the cult seemed to prey on wealthy and famous people he had access to in Canada. Not excusing anyone's behaviour at all but brainwashing, neuro linguistic programming and the like can have a very powerful affect on people, especially anyone vulnerable and a little lost, like we all are sometimes. Again though, no excuse. Best of luck with it all!
@sarahbestPhD
@sarahbestPhD 26 күн бұрын
Thank you so much! Yeah NVXIM is a wild and horrible story… I’m surprised I’d never really heard of it before. It’s sad the leader preyed on so many talented and promising people, as cults so often do. It’s so true though that the brainwashing can so radically change people, and get them to do things they probably never thought they were capable of. I watched The Vow and then another docuseries Seduced: Inside the NVXIM cult, and it’s fascinating and horrifying to hear stories from people who were deep into the cult… like you say we shouldn’t excuse anyone’s behaviour, but it seems so often people in these situations don’t realize the extent of the manipulation until it’s too late.

17:28 Oh, boy, I felt that! probably one of my least favorite parts of ADHD is the combination of "don't sleep enough" + "too tired to work". I'm finally getting around to putting together my proposal for my Master's thesis, and the yo-yo of interest between my "special interest" and my coursework is sometimes really jarring. I'm glad you put your article on here, I'm looking forward to reading it! Also, as an older ADHDer, I would just throw out the possibility of doing less. That has been the only thing that has worked for me, because I know I'm going to run off on side quests throughout the day and there's just no stopping it. I also just have less energy throughout the day and I know once I hit the wall, pushing past it won't get me very far and will only take away from my energy for the next day. Watching your vlogs, I don't know how you do it all! You have a LOT on your plate. I'm not a PhD student, so I'm sure there's a high expectation on you that I'm not a part of, but just something to consider. I think neurodivergents have to find ways to make the world work for them. I'd hate to see you give up on your dream because we expect the academic world to run us over and the only way to avoid it is to get out. There's a lot of room for change in academia, some of which you're talking about with indigenous inclusion, and there's room for change around neurodivergence in academia. Yet, it won't change if we don't start pushing back. Considering how little they want to pay us for our work, I think there's absolutely room for us to do less, focus our energy where it is most effective, and have a better work-life balance. I hope you find a way that works for you!

Hi Sarah, it's me, having found your channel only a little while ago! I am also using Obsidian. I see that you keep the "research" folder separately from the "dissertation" folder. May I ask what is in the dissertation folder? Do you write/plan on writing the text of your dissertation in Obsidian as well? I am keeping all my research notes in one vault and I'm also writing my text in several linked documents there, but sometimes I find it a bit confusing and hard to tell how much I have actually written for my own text. But then again I find it nice to have it all in one place, being able to connect everything. Just wondering how you are doing it--hope I didn't miss that piece of information in the video 🙂
@sarahbestPhD
@sarahbestPhD 2 ай бұрын
Hi! Sorry for the late reply, but yes I keep my "research" separate from my dissertation notes. The research folder contains my notes on all the readings I've done (whether they're relevant to my dissertation or not). The dissertation folder is where I keep all of my writing, thoughts, and brainstorming related to my dissertation. I do the planning and initial writing for my dissertation there in Obsidian, so I can make connections easily between different ideas and to secondary texts. Right now I'm still in the research phase of my dissertation process, but I think when I start actually writing chapters, I'll do that in Obsidian too.

Sorry for the late reply, but this is a good question, ha! I selected my dissertation topic based on things that are of interest to me, and where my various broad points of interest intersect.
