OMG - I'm finally walking on my own!!
In today's video I share what it was like traveling with my boot as well as how my doctor's appointment went where the boot came off.
Upon filming this video, I was just about 7 weeks post op and about 2 months and one week since my injury occurred.

Lol ok I just commented on one of ur other videos but this one caught my eye cause in a little over 2months from now I’m meant to Travel to France for another work related thing and I’m assuming I’ll still be in my boot by that time and was curious how I would manage that… once again 😋thanks for the video it’s really given me some insight into what to expect and some really great advise 👍😊
@HelloImAlexa
@HelloImAlexa 2 жыл бұрын
Oh hello! haha hmm let's see so 2 months from now… I think that puts you at about 10 weeks post op. It's SORT of tricky to say because doctors do seem to have varying protocol - for example I started working with a Physical Therapist after 7 weeks post op and there's someone else I've been chatting with who's starting working with a Physical Therapist since around 4 weeks post op. For me, 7 weeks post op I was out of my boot, walking on my own, and cleared to drive again (since it was my right foot that's been injured). When I was in my boot for the 3 weeks I was walking on it, it was pretty much no big deal. I couldn't go super, super long distances but I was getting around really well and it was relatively painless. That said, if you are without your boot by this trip, you may need to slow down a bit again. It's honestly been really hard for me these last few weeks without my boot now and especially right after you take it off you have to be very careful not to slip and fall - wouldn't want a re-rupture 😣 Anyway, I hope that was somewhat helpful. Let me know what you think and if you need anything else. Hope getting the stitches out went well today!
@toberinmeyer1339
@toberinmeyer1339 2 жыл бұрын
@@HelloImAlexa I think no matter what I’ll definitely still have my boot because I have been to France a few times and I know we will most probably walk, so even if I need to take my crutch with I’ll do that lol I really don’t want to go through this again … that first few days after I ruptured it was horrible 🤦🏻‍♂️ but I’ll definitely take it slow! And like you said each doc is different… will see what My doc says today when I go remove my stitches 😊

Good morning, Docter.. I had a fall, which led to a complete rupture of the Achilles tendon in my leg. I underwent an operation to connect the tendon from the ankle with support for the tendon...My leg is currently in a cast for a month. After that, I have to undergo physical therapy because my leg has become shorter than the other by about 1 cm. I hope you can provide me with some treatments and exercises so that my legs become as normal as they were.I believe in you very much and I hope for your help. With my deepest gratitude and appreciation for you...What is required is exercises after the Achilles tendon connection and grafting operation... with my sincere thanks and gratitude to you

Hi Alexa. Your videos are helpful and you're very uplifting, so thank you. I injured my achilles tendon in April and the first dr I went to must not have realized how badly it hurt, despite me telling her that the pain was severe. So I continued to walk on it and did 6 weeks of physical therapy causing a 90% tear, now requiring surgery (with a different doctor, who actually hears me). It's been painful for so long now (July 30th) that I can't remember what it felt like before the injury. My question is, does your heel/ankle feel better than it did when you injured your achilles tendon? Does it feel back to normal? My surgery is on August 26th and I'm just praying that when all is said and done, it will feel better and feel like it did before my injury. I can't even imagine what it feels like to not be in pain.
@HelloImAlexa
@HelloImAlexa 2 жыл бұрын
Cindy hi! So glad you're enjoying my videos. Oh jeeze… so sorry to hear that happened 😕 Glad you found a better doctor who you trust. I'm surprised your surgery is not for another month - maybe because a 90% tear is considered a partial rupture. Your question is an interesting one. I'll see how I can best answer it. When my achilles was torn, after a few days went by, I wouldn't say I really felt anything. I could kind of shuffle on it - it didn't really hurt but it wasn't really connected either. I had some bruising up my leg and by my ankle so I suppose that hurt a bit but not a lot. Generally speaking, now almost 6 months post-op, no my ankle/achilles does not feel back to normal yet. I notice it constantly. It's not horrible but it's def not to the point where it's "normal" After about 4-5 days from my surgery, I wasn't in a lot of pain at all, barely noticed it. Once you start moving it around again (which you need to do to train the tendon) it will start to hurt again. There is unfortunately, a good amount of "pain" that goes into healing but I've felt it's all been manageable. I predict in another month I will be feeling a lot better, even more so than I am now, and after a full year (12 months) I may truly feel more "normal" - hope that helps. More videos to come as I hit milestones so stay tuned!

yay!! Yeah having done it myself, I think you'd be fine walking around in the boot too (if we are on a similar timeline). I usually do a lot of walking around when I travel so I dont know how much you would consider a lot. I imagine you may have to limit yourself a bit -- maybe try something more moderate and push your limits from there. I'm not sure I have many specific pointers, just make sure you keep your boot on at all times (except showering) and take it easy if you do feel fatigued. Glad you're going to be able to take the trip still! 🙂

Alexa! I'm reaching out because I also tore my Achilles playing basketball. Life long hooper. I am 38. Was playing in an upper tier city league. Made a quick move to the elbow, jumped up, shot it, came down and felt like the defender kicked me in the leg. I've never been injured before, so in my head I thought it was a badly rolled/sprained ankle. I actually went BACK in, hobbled around and played the entire second half. Went all weekend before I realized something wasn't right. Sure enough, full mid rupture BUT not torn off the heel bone. I decided to NOT get surgery. I've been in a boot since day 3. I'm 5.5 weeks in now. I have my first PT session this Friday. It was also my right foot, so I haven't been able to drive. When you started to drive did you wear anything to protect your achilles at all? Did you use your toes to press the gas down or did you kind of just push the entire leg down? I am hoping to drive within the next week. Sorry for the long lead in but my main question right now is about the driving aspect of it. Let me know, thanks! - Ant

@HelloImAlexa

Hey Drew, wishing you the best with your surgery this week! Hmm walking long distances were definitely tiring but for the most part walking around and getting places was no sweat. I was walking with the boot for about 3 weeks before taking it off. Fast-forward to now, it actually feels like it's been a bit harder. It seems like my foot gets tired from walking faster and it gets stiff when I sit and try to get up to walk so that part slows me down. Not sure what sort of work you are doing, but I'd say once you're allowed to walk in the boot you should be pretty good for that period of time. Once you're out of the boot you have to be very careful again and you may want to take things easier. Hope that helps! Let me know if you need anything else though.

I too have ruptured my Achilles tendon :( (almost 1 week post-op). When you were wearing the boot, did you have heel wedge inserts (it seems most people have used those)? Other people seem to take out one of the heel wedges every week etc. Also when they were cleared to use shoes they also used heel wedge inserts. Just curious- thanks!
@HelloImAlexa
@HelloImAlexa 2 жыл бұрын
heeeey, ah! I feel you 😣 I saw/heard a lot of people talk about the "wedges" with their boot too but for some reason by boot didn't have that at all. The boot had a gear which could be set to point my foot in different positions so maybe it's the newer technology 🤷‍♀️ I have no idea. When I was cleared to use my shoes I also did not use any heel wedges. Walking barefoot was significantly harder than walking with my tennis shoes on though. Hope that's helpful! Wishing you a good recovery.

@@user-xg6km4ss2m You're so welcome! Yeah I was seeing a lot of partial weigh bearing to full weight bearing as well. My doctor never explicitly told me to do partial so I never talked about it in any of my videos but I found myself at a certain point sort of resting my foot on the ground more while I was standing, and slightly graze my foot on the ground while I was walking with crutches. That all to say - Just make sure to do what your doctor says to do. Even if you are partial weight baring you're not going to be doing a lot until you're putting all your weight on it - which for me was after about 1 month post-op

hi there! I'm not sure what sort of surgery that is or what it's for - is that for an achilles tendon rupture too? If you're wondering when you can walk without the boot you really need to consult your doctor since they are the ones managing your protocol! Hi there! oh yay well congrats on being so far into the process. For walking again, ah - not sure if I really have any tips. For me, I tried it for the first time in my doctors office and I felt very safe and comfortable. I just followed what my doctor told me to along the way and trusted they wouldn't put me in a dangerous situation so when it came time to walk, I was ready and confident to give it a go! Let me know if you have any other questions and wishing you the best 💪

Alexa, I’m 5 weeks post-op Achilles tendon rupture surgery, and I have really enjoyed and appreciated your videos. I’d like to know what walking boot you had as I have not seen one like that please give specifics. I do not feel mine is a good fit for me. Thank you so much.

Awe your so welcome!! My boot was prescribed to me by my doctor - I’m not sure it’s something people can just easily buy on their own. If you don’t think yours is a good fit, definitely seek medical advice before switching things up! Wishing you a smooth recovery 💪

@@HelloImAlexa did you ever have times that it hurt and you felt like you overdid it and made something worse? Is it that you are going to feel pain and you just need to push through it and keep doing the exercises?

@@trinakramer9908 hmmm not really because I was always under the supervision of my Physical Therapist and I was only ever following what they told me to do. There is a balance though and you know your body best! Don't push yourself so hard that it doesnt feel right either.

H Alexa, right after your surgery (2 weeks mark), do you find your tendon is very tight? so much so that you can not walk flat foot, mine is at 70 degree angle at moment.
@HelloImAlexa

Hi there - are you 2 weeks before or after surgery? After surgery, I was not walking on my leg at all (Non-weight bearing) until the 4th week. Before surgery, I was only able to walk on my leg with a boot on and I was more or less just shuffling around. I wasn't able to walk because the tendon was not connected.

 @Hello, I'm Alexa I am at 2 weeks after surgery, so for last weeks since surgery, i was in a splint (half cast), that was removed 2 days ago, am now in a moon boot with wedges at bottom, but my tendon is very tight and heel can not touch ground, there is 35 degree gap.

@@Ivan-zz9hd ahh gotcha, that seems like normal protocol to me? If you're concerned at all, definitely ask your doctor

Hmmm it was a while back but I think so, yes. I had some moments where my foot would swell. Not too bad though and I would just ice it to help it go down.

Of course!! And yes, I was non-weight bearing for 4 weeks and then starting walking on it with the boot from 4-7 weeks before getting out of the boot. Hope that's helpful!

I got one more question for you and I don’t mean to bother you my wife really appreciate you responding at least you care about other people. Her question is within the four weeks did you go from to the boot? But when you went to the boot did you still have the cast on so did you wear your boot with the cast over it?

@@leboonleboon1638 No worries at all! Happy to chat if you have more questions :) If you haven't checked out my "full timeline" video -- I recommend checking that out for exact timing that I documented for everything. Link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jau8qKN6qbWep6s In short, after my surgery I was in a splint (which is sort of like a half cast). About a week or so later, I was out of my splint (they cut it open) and put immediately into my boot. Hope that helps!

Did you walk with wedges in your shoes at this point?
@HelloImAlexa
@HelloImAlexa Жыл бұрын
Hi there! My boot never had wedges, it had a crank on the side which my doctor would switch to diff positions when I went in for me appointments. By week 4 I was at neutral or walking position so I THINK that would mean if I did have a boot that had wedges that I would have had 0 wedges by week 4.

I both started driving at 7 weeks post-op and I was out of my boot at 7 weeks post-op. I'm not sure what you mean by "released" but I still continued to see my doctor (with more time between visits) until I was 1 year post-op. Hope that helps!

I'm very much a rule follower so all the big milestones I hit were because I was following the guidance and protocol from my doctors. My surgeon was in the room with me when I walked for the first time both with and without the boot. As far as when for these milestones, I made a whole video sharing that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jau8qKN6qbWep6s Hope it helps!

Alexa, Thank you so very much for sharing your journey as you recovered from your injury. I am 4 days postoperative ankle surgery and I was feeling so down, and all I could think of was how much time was ahead of me and I just feel super down and overwhelmed by it all! Your videos have shown me that having a positive mindset is the number one key to success in this process. I absorbed some of your positive vibes and started feeling better immediately. So again thank you, thank you, thank you. It has made a huge difference for me✨🫶🏾🌺🌸✨
