White is being employed in almost every mixture. Isn’t that affecting color quality in the means of vibrancy? How do you address this?

Wonderful descriptive video, full of really helpful instruction. Could the nose be at a better angle? Maybe it would help the 3D of the portrait.

I worked with the Zorn ( adjusted) pallet for a year. It proved one thing to me. Artists don’t need the six shades of every color on their pallet. When I see an artist do this it tells me they were never trained in color mixing. Or are too lazy to mix colors. One can work with a” limited “ pallet and achieve many ( harmonious) shades and values. AND saves a fortune purchasing every color manufacturers want you to buy. The old adage - you can make most every color and shade from the basic primaries plus black and white is true. Bottom line, for me, is it is not the color hue but the value of the color. (Note: lead white is dangerous and shortened the lives of many an artist throughout history.) For fifty years of painting I have used what this called a “ bias” pallet which consists of : cool and warm of the primaries. ( titanium) White and Raw Umber. My red is Cad. Red light, Cad Yellow light, Ocher, Ultra Marine Blue, Viridian, ( sap green for outdoor landscapes) That is it. I have no trouble painting still life’s, portraits or landscapes. Thanks for the video. A bit strange though that you take your time for plotting out the height of the features of the face but then going straight to angles of the outsides of the face. Getting this somewhat accurate, especially with regards to the centre line is quite difficult for many (me included). It seems like your doing 2 thngs at once: determining the width of the face AND doing angles.

I must confess: I do have trouble taking the 'paint what you see not what you think' when the head in the painting is turned in a different angle than the reference. That said, I enjoy painting what I think …
