Zorn Palette Course: 2 - The Drawing
In this video, Peter starts off talking through the materials he will using for this portrait demonstration. He then begins the portrait by laying down the base coat and the underdrawing, explaining how he gets a likeness and starts to build the character of the subject.

it's always a happy surprise when 'tube recommends a genuine teacher instead of the usual students. Watched, subbed. Thank you.

Thank you Mr Keegan, I needed to hear what you said about drawing! Spending too much time on detailed drawing and then feeling hesitant about applying paint is exactly where I'm stuck. Great tutorial!

I'm watching this tutorial series for the 2nd time now. I've watched a lot of alla prima portrait tutorials but this is honestly the best I've seen so far. The way you talk through every decision you're making as you go is so helpful and it's already helped improve my painting. Thanks so much!

Chanced upon this video. Liked the logic and clarity of your delivery, no silly waffle or music. Liked the idea of the Zorn palette - few colours for me to get in a mess with. Liked the idea of drawing with paint - as I do on landscapes - rather than covering everything in charcoal. I subscribed, you've got me, 'I'm a believer.' I shall now work through your videos, then wait to see where you go next ..... Thank you Peter

My painting professor insists we do not use graphite or charcoal etc for drawing as it interferes with the paint yes.

I have another question. What kind of heavy oil do you use for blocking? The oils I have are flaxseed oil and gamsol.

So ... can this technique be done successfully with acrylics? If so, would be great if you did a similar Zorn demonstration but with acrylics ...

Fewer colours means less chance of making muddy colours. Excellent for mixing the full range of skin colours. Economic and harmonious colour effect. Exploring the colour palette of a mater painter. Always good to learn new approaches and ideas and challenge ourselves. However, like line dancing, it’s not for everyone.

You should think and look a little more and wave that brush less. Painting comes out of mindless waving of the brush the same way tea gets sweet from stirring itself with a spoon....

Who said cancer? please someone talk about the toxicity of the oil pigments, solvents and fumes, its painful to watch him touching the canvas and the paint without gloves.
