To my understanding the questions during an interview tend to get exponentially more difficult in order to stretch the interviewee's thinking capacity. Spectrally speaking, would such a question lean to being a "difficult" question?

The reliance on interviews as a major factor in the admission process at Oxford and Cambridge can be seen as an unfair measure, especially for introverts or shy individuals. These candidates may struggle to express their intellectual potential under pressure, which doesn’t accurately reflect their abilities or knowledge. As a result, admissions decisions may be based on interview performance rather than a more comprehensive evaluation of their academic strengths, creating an uneven playing field for those who are less comfortable in social situations.
@efurtado24684 күн бұрын
For introverts or shy individuals, the interview process at Oxford and Cambridge can be particularly stressful, as the ability to articulate thoughts clearly and confidently is crucial. This can lead to a misrepresentation of their true potential, as they may struggle to express their ideas fully in a high-pressure environment. As a result, decisions may be influenced more by how candidates present themselves in the interview, rather than their actual academic abilities or test scores, potentially disadvantaging those who are less comfortable in social or stressful situations.

I got rejected by Cambridge and LSE for Economics when I was 17. Even though it was difficult to get rejected, all it meant is that I went to another university (UCL). What I liked about the LSE Economics programme is that they didn't bother to interview students, they just looked at your AS Level grades and personal statement, and made a decision from that, which I think is a fairer and more transparent approach, and doesn't involve countless hours of interview processes.

What do you think went wrong?
@robertoronco9355Күн бұрын
@SarahLayton-hu7jm Got burn out October/November because I was doing 5 A-Levels. I spent most of that time trying to drop English rather than Oxford prep. I did decent on my HAT, since I got 75/100 with 69/100 apparently being the average score for those given offers. My written work was alright but could have been better. Also I did not prep for interviews well. I did not read up enough and I did not know the content of my courses as well as I should have. Knowing what I know now, thinking about reapplying. Still really disheartened though and my confidence has taken a major hit.
@MohammedPatel-r9v4 күн бұрын
Dear Dr. William, At Oxford, does getting an interview mean that you have a chance of getting an offer if your interview goes really well? I ask this because according to Cambridge, if you are given an interview and that goes really well, then you stand a strong chance of getting an offer? Or, is it possible that despite a strong interview performance you could be rejected based on weaknesses in your pre-interview application like admissions test score or GCSE/A-level grades? If so, why would you be shortlisted for interview in the first place if an interview performance no matter how good would not be able to outweigh the other weaknesses of your application? I suppose this might have to do with Cambridge generally making more offers than Oxford but I’d interested to hear what you have to say.

I was not able to take the Oxford entrance exam despite a month of back and forth. Having had to apply for special consideration, I was still offered an interview. However, as I'd imagine it would be difficult to judge an applicant without one of 3 metrics, I was not awarded a place. I really really, wanted to take the entrance exam. I had been preparing for it for months. All for nothing. I guess that is life.

How long before decisions day at Oxford does Oxford finish the admissions process and decide who it wants to give offers to? For example, do you finish by the end of December and just hold on to the information about who will be getting offers until early January or are you still making decisions until the day before results come out?

Most decisions are settled in December, but there are reallocations between colleges that can take some time.

As someone applying to Oxford this October as an independent candidate, please could you tell me how the process works? By this I mean, will Oxford or individual colleges seek to verify my UCAS reference by contacting my referee who is a private tutor or not? Also, how does Oxford deal with extenuating circumstances? I have a letter from my former school. Will Oxford contact my former school which I haven’t attended in a year?

Hi Dr Williams. Watching this video a year early just in case i get rejected come 2026. I was wondering if you could make a video about how to best write personal statement with the new UCAS personal statement format, as its quite different to how the system worked before and there are no hood guides on how to use this new format to best get into Oxford.

Do you have any idea why Oxford gives out admissions decisions earlier than Cambridge - has it always been this way? I just find it strange since the two universities seem to have the same deadlines most of the time.
@JesusCollegeOxford15717 күн бұрын
I'm afraid I don't know. Just guessing, Cambridge colleges have mildly different admissions criteria to each other, so may take longer to pool candidates in the "winter pool". They also interview a higher proportion of applicants, because Oxford (I think) spends more time interviewing each candidate. But I don't know for certain.

Aw its so sad. In my final and third interview for maths, I was told "Bye for now" right after they'd asked if it was my last one. They'd kept saying "perfect" and "fantastic". Really got my hopes up. Rejected on my birthday as well :( hope everyone else rejected is alright
@AdamBaird-q1z7 күн бұрын
@AdamJackson-kf9eg what do you think may have been the reason you were rejected?
@AdamJackson-kf9eg7 күн бұрын
@@AdamBaird-q1z I don't know. I made a couple of silly algebraic mistakes in the interviews, but I don't think I had any conceptual misunderstandings, just 'number errors' from nerves. My sitting of the MAT was unfortunately disrupted by the test centre conditions: I had to go through 8 pens, and it sounds ridiculous but one of the other candidates near me was typing so hard and furiously it was extremely distracting. I managed to get special consideration after contacting the faculty however, and I understood what I had to do in the majority of the exam, it was just these distractions which wasted my time. It's really sad. So much work and I know so many people do it. I never rested on my laurels and I never could stop doing maths: studying it is everything I do and I do it constantly. I was fortunate to have had a practice interview with a Cambridge maths student who had told me the interview was really strong. Hopefully this will redirect me somewhere better for me :)

Hi. I am retaking my A-levels after underperforming last year due to medical issues. I know that Oxford claims that they accept retakes but is this just something that is said or have you ever actually met anyone who resat all of their A-levels and got into Oxford? Furthermore, should I take 4 A-levels in my resits rather than 3? I know you typically say that you don’t need more than 3, but since I’m retaking subjects, would I be looked down on compared to someone who had done their exams in their first sitting so I would need to somehow compensate with an extra subject? Based on the competitiveness of Oxford, I wonder if even if I performed really well on all aspects of the admissions process when compared to someone else who did the same but had not retaken their exams, would I be rejected in favour of them (despite extenuating circumstances)?
@JesusCollegeOxford15717 күн бұрын
Oxford will accept retakes, and will consider the circumstances surrounding the retakes. Your medical issues could well justify a decision to retake. You don't need 4 A-levels to be competitive, but be careful with the A-levels you pick. Some courses make clear from the website that they value some subjects over others.

Good evening Dr Williams! As somebody who has not been given an undergraduate offer post-interview for studying Modern Languages, is there any point in reapplying? There are certainly things that I would like to do in a "Gap year" that are related to the subject, but I have always thought that if I can get in off the first try that that would be the best option. Do you have any advice as to whether or not it is worthwhile to chance it and have another go in applying during the next round? Or simply to just accept one of the other perfectly good other offers that I have been made by other universities? It would of course depend on what my actual A-Level grades would be, but at least meeting the entrance requirements. Thank you for your kind words of advice and support that you have issued to previous and ongoing cohorts of applicants, and for your frequent and direct replies to queries, and notably to a previous enquiry of mine.
@JesusCollegeOxford15717 күн бұрын
It's impossible for me to advise on this, because it is such a personal decision. I nearly reapplied whilst studying at Bristol Uni, but decided against it because I was enjoying myself too much and didn't want to start from scratch. Of course, there's a risk of turning down good places and then facing the competitiveness of Oxbridge all over again with a chance of not being offered a place twice.
