Thank you so much, Dr. Matthew Williams, for all those videos you have created so far. Your videos have ignited my hidden (honestly, which I assumed quite impossible) dream of studying at Oxford. I am now really motivated and thrilled even on my way of training myself to think of myself and to think creatively. The lecture videos are indeed a great help. I'll be looking forward to your future videos.

You need to contact the college admissions officer at the college you're applying to. They can advise on this. Their contact details are on the following site, if you click on the relevant collage name: www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/colleges/a-z-of-colleges

Looking at past reading lists, they seem to reflect what is considered the literary canon, the group of works that are the most remembered throughout history and have had a great deal of impact on fiction, so works like that of Shakespeare are included due to the scale of his influence on the English language through his coining of new terms, and because his plays have been so often reinvented, they can tell us a lot about Jacobean society. Part of the study of English is examining literary history both as a way to understand our past (the historicist angle). Because twilight is something relatively recent we don’t know whether it will become a part of the canon, and can’t be sure of the impact it will have on literary history, but I would argue that some of the books you will find on reading lists aren’t so dissimilar from twilight, they’re often the popular media of their time. There is also arguably bias against literature made for younger audiences, in this case teenagers, often the literature that is studied and remembered is that which depicts contemporary society (i.e things like Dickens) and therefore can be used to understand history. I’d posit that in future twilight may end up on reading lists, but right now we can’t know what sort of impact it will have on literary history, and whether future critics will find it useful to understand the time it was written (although I would argue it’s a really interesting portrait of contemporary attitudes towards sexuality, especially those in Mormonism, which the book originates from).

In a way Twilight is more of a media or even social phenomenon than it is a literary one in the stictest sense; still it is interesting to study what larger impact it may have had (if any) on the literary world in the sense of what was prioritised in publishing. However I would argue that the relevance of the novel itself was relatively limited, in the sense that amost 20 years after its release the book has disappeared from the convo in favour of the movies

I think fiction and any type of creative writing requires decades of deep study, and reading. Great writing won’t just come out of the blue -it has to be earned through hard work. Thank you so much for being so inspiring!

First of all, we must realize that art is not respected for being popular or being enjoyable to read... Rather being innovative. Twilight happened to resonate with a lot of teenagers fantasies, which is what made it popular, but not necessarily innovative. Shakespeare however, being someone who wrote in the 1600s, invented a lot of things... to put this in perspective, this was a time when Daniel Dafoe wrote novels. His novels had a very flowery and unnecessarily descriptive language, this most likely due to most works of art were poetry, which were also flowery and descriptive. Daniel Dafoe tried to capture that in his writing, which was something innovative but not necessarily enjoyable to read. Shakespeare wrote plays. He was capable of writing such strong characters. Even female ones, which at the time were really objectified in novels like Daniel Dafoe's. Shakespeare wrote to someone like Lady Macbeth, which even to today's standards is one of the most complex female characters. Not to mention everything he has brought into the English language. That is my take, it might not be great since I am not necessarily a literary luminary 😅.

I think that this is a question which people have asked themselves for centuries and people often tried to translate music into words. Translating music into words is in my opinion that, which writing about music essentially consists of. A good example for this practice of trying to put music into words is programme music. In this genre, composers connected music to a story. The question, if these compositions can be listened to without the accompanying text can easily be answered with ‘yes’. This could be verified by presenting programmical pieces to people without showing them the accompanying text. Then the interviewer could ask them if they liked the music and if they connect it to a story or how they would describe the piece with words. In the next step the scientist can compare the answers and see how the answers differ from one another. Another way to approach the question is by looking into literature regarding common literary figures which relate to music. The researcher can then figure out how these figures changed with time. In the final step the scientist would analyse why the figures changed and why they differ from one another. That way, a possible relation of musical sources to literary change could be identified. If this relation exists, the question if music can be translated into words would be more likely to be answered positively. I would be delighted to receive a reply to this comment. Thank you :)

What you also have to take into consideration is that an entire subject - musicology - is based on the assumption that you can write about music and in some sense, put it into words. Also: aren’t scores another way to write down music? Photography also essentially write down music (though you can argue if it is music or just sound waves, and if music consists of sound waves) in curved lines and translate those back into sound waves or music.

Ooh this is really interesting! I think you would have to consider that writing is a much more specific and widely understood form of communication than dance is, so there’s a much greater ability to describe music in writing than to describe architecture through dance. But also, writing cannot communicate music in the same way that musical notation can, so it’s perhaps more efficient to combine notation with writing when analysing music.

@FuturePastPerson11 күн бұрын
You could also look at how written communication has conventions whereas dancing is less rigid in what counts as fundamentals. Much of classical written communication comes from the upper classes whereas dancing is more ubiquitous so maybe the comparison is flawed in the sense of barriers to entry of the artform as well.

I love this question!!! 😊 I wrote a paper once about how the Bloomsbury group influenced one another… Roger Fry began to deconstruct images through abstract art (River Poplars, 1912), and I believe abstract art influenced Virginia Woolf to deconstruct prose into stream of consciousness (Jacob’s Room, 1922). Perhaps the best explanation contemporary to the time for abstract art was not to explain it… but to “show it” in another medium (literature). So can you write about music? I would say… not as well as one could write musically … or write like music. You can experience music through poetry; in fact, you cannot comprehend poetry without music. Thank you for the beautiful thoughts! ❤️🙌

40 years ago I did the Mensa test when considering a career in IT. I received the gushing letter congratulating me on my IQ score of 146, along with an invitation to do the full test. Fortunately I was intelligent enough to know that the £35 they were asking me to pay was a con. I've done fine in life with just 3 'O' Levels. I put the £35 towards a programming course.

I would suggest reading/watching some things that interest you, but will stretch and challenge. Then describe what you find to someone who is not as interested (could be family/friend)! If you can explain in simple terms what you've learnt, that is a sign you get it. Then explain what you think about what you've learnt, and how you might like to develop it.
