A ferry from SLC to near the Food Processing factory then onto rail would have saved alot of money.

Handy dandy ❤.. Additional, would it work when you place like two (temporary) roads to create a nice straight edge when you paint something in between, like that painted road opposite of the station ??

I like the idea of using barges to move grain from Pittsburgh to a food processor near Allentown and bringing back food on return trip.. You could maybe experiment with a River Boat passenger line from Pittsburgh to Allentown and then beyond. Although, I know you hate boats so maybe a rail line between Pittsburgh and Allentown doing the same thing :)

I'd take tools back onto the logs line to the point where it diverges from the tools line into the city. That way you will have the logs line taking something back, plus making the tools line shorter. Effectively, I am proposing a mini cargo hub, that may become bigger as you connect more lines.

Maybe look at adding a Ferry service from Salt Lake City to the a ferry dock at the food factory then you could make a double track line from the Factory into Portland allowing a passenger line connected to the ferry but additionally allowing a freight train to carry the food into the city and collecting grain on its return trip, thus removing those horses and even the ships. That way you almost can make the port at the Food factory a major shipping terminal. Hope that makes sense. Nice episode.

Ayo, really excited for this series. I just got to say one thing, don’t get too ahead of yourselves. You should play within the capabilities of the year that you are in. Because of course you could just load the line with horses to meet the maximum load, or you could play, and allow for the option for growth. Also another thing that would be nice to see, is the small and narrow tight streets of the old town and how it compares in a number of years time when it becomes a metropolis. But other than that keep up the good work can’t wait for the next episode. ☺️

I'm not understanding why you wouldn't consider a shunting line on the logs line instead of all the trucks? I ask because I don't know why you wouldn't.
@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect 9 күн бұрын
I never thought of doing that but I would be worried about running the train empty for the trip back as well as the elevation change from the forest to the sawmill causing the train to be too slow. Maybe once more powerful engines are available that might be an option.

Really enjoying your series! Have you ever thought about adding an exit to the truck stops? When I play I really like adding another road connection to my truck stops, so the vehicles pull in, and keep going straight out the exit. They dont hv to turn around and I find it smoother.
@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect 9 күн бұрын
I do that in some instances. However, I usually only do it when its a larger station with a lot of trucks. I have been using a different truck station from the workshop which has a separated entrance and exit but it just comes down to what I think looks better in those locations

Unless I am very much mistaken, you get slightly bigger horse carriages in 1865, which I would highly encourage to swap over to in order to decrease the amount of traffic. Great job of using rate information - such a massive change from your previous series. 🙂 For passengers I would recommend to try to start with at least 3 stops on the line - it has been proved that lines that go to more than one destination are more in-demand. Passenger travel by boats is only really feasible when you can't build a rail bridge that is affordable or realistic-looking, as trains are always faster, i.e., more appealing.
@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect 9 күн бұрын
It seems like those actually come in 1870, so just a little more waiting. Bigger carriages/trucks will open up a lot more options. Unfortunately there are not 3 cites that are easily reachable by train so choosing where to start and how to expand will prove to be an interesting challenge.
@saspry
@saspry 14 күн бұрын
Two words - Line Rates :) Since the Tools factory only needed 100 units to start @ level 1, you only needed to produce 100 planks... which meant a max 200 logs from the forest for starters. Sure, these will increase as the sawmill and tools factory level up with extra consumption of Tools in the towns, but the vehicles placed on the lines at the start were far too many for what was needed. Use the CONSUMERS tab in the Tools & Sawmill to work out what your current line rate on the transfer needs to be :)

The series is going really nicely and very satisfyingly. If want, to tie into the whole adding depth to realism by decorating, maybe in the country on a farm have a dedicated road depot that has stables for horses to breed. Then for later, a mechanics shop in a city or also country with maybe even a small engine and chassis manufacturer near a steel works and machines shop. Really do enjoy the adding realism by decorating the industries, cant wait to see it when comes to city population growth and restructuring some of the city layouts.

When you start up an oil well it is immediately producing 400 units of oil. You should set your line rate to 400 to match that oil production and get it to the port and you will make a better profit doing that even if some of the oil goes to waste at the port before you have money to increase your ship lines. The same is true for lumber, coal and ore. Those resources always produce maximum amounts as soon as you start them up and your line rates should always match their production rates.
@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect 19 күн бұрын
The only thing stopping me from doing this is that it would take close to 200 horses to move at that rate. Maybe once bigger trucks become available but right not it doesn’t make sense to do that yet

@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect 21 күн бұрын
Thanks! It is something new I wanted to try and might continue doing in future videos. I did not try split the fuel line because the current one actually still earns a profit on the legs where it’s only half full so I figured there’s no point in trying the other set up since this one works well
@ymeshulin
@ymeshulin 20 күн бұрын
@@ultimatearchitect splitting the line will actually increase your profits: 01. Your current set up in terms of how load percentages are split per journey legs are 100/50/50/50. 02. If you split the lines, you will have one line running at 100/50 rate, the other running 100/100. On top of that, the number of ships will be optimized per line.
@ultimatearchitect

I have not played this game since it came out. I was kinda miffed that each city requires certain goods, instead of all the goods, as in Transport Fever 1. Do you think this was an improvement over the first game or indifferent?
@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect 26 күн бұрын
Over time, as the cities grow they will slowly demand more resources until all 6 but you can also change that in the settings to only allow 2 or 4 resources per city. I personally like the customization the game allows when it comes with this setting because it allows different cities to have different “feels” and it helps to add more personality to the map

It wouldn't be the shortest setup but there's a decent tools production option outside of Lincoln. Lincoln needs tools and has a factory and there's Planks and Logs production nearby in Tacoma. Another good option might be shipping Crude Oil from Salt Lake City to the Salt Lake City Fuel Refinery and then delivering it to Houston. Love this series!

Why waste $$ on terraforming the river when adding a simple road would have done the trick for so so so much cheaper. Also with setting up the stones/bricks, why not use the conmat factory you had basically across the river from Allentown that way again its a quicker trip by ship which is more efficient. Love your detailing work!
@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect 26 күн бұрын
That’s a good point about terraforming the river. I was in a rush trying to turn everything around before I completely ran out of money so I just rolled with that decision. As for the industries, I want the random industries to be more of a guide for where the industry should generally be placed. This might not always be the case but in this instance I decided that moving it was the better option for functionality and detailing. The way I want to handle this series is to make the buildings and vehicles as realistic as possible while also keeping it profitable in the economy for the game. This may result in not the most optimized set ups but this is a compromise I’m okay with in some instances

On of the rules we used was if it was within 300 miles we trucked it, over that it was worth putting it on a train or ship. With the horses it’s got to be a much smaller distance but it’s a nice way to think about it. Great video.

That new farm was far too cheap LOL Also, have you checked how much the ongoing infrastructure bill is for industries placed using the sandbox? I was gonna do it that way for my new map and save game, but the costs were ridiculously high on Hard level. What difficulty level are we playing here? :)
@ultimatearchitect
@ultimatearchitect Ай бұрын
I have not looked into any of that. I did not know that there was extra costs on placed industries. This is hard mode with minor adjustments to maintenance costs. I’m trying to find a good balance with finances so I don’t end up with 100 billion in money after a few in game years
@user-wn5yw6oi7l
@user-wn5yw6oi7l Ай бұрын
Your farm is initially producing at a rate of 200 units. You should always set your line rate to match that as you make money delivering the grain to the food plant at that rate regardless of what your food plant output rate is. Stephen Spry has an excellent video on that and how you make money early in the game by using this technique on several of the raw material suppliers. I also agree with others that your Portland food delivery line is not really the right way to go. Using a ship to deliver food to Portland would be a much better option instead of 100 or more trucks operating in the same line as your grain trucks. If you don’t want to use a ship for Portland, at the very least have the grain trucks bring food back to a truck stop near the farm and set your Portland food line to deliver from there. You will make more money doing that because your grain trucks will not be totally empty on their return trip and you will significantly reduce the number of food delivery trucks you need.
