Great work. I intend to buy this. How long does the dielectric fluid last before it needs replacing? I ask because I have previous experience with industrial wire EDM machines and we had filtration and dielectric polymer infusion to maintain the fluid. Great work, thank you for making this possible for hobbyists 👍🏻 Plus: how much filament is required for the printed parts?

What's it going to be called? The Big Kerf? This is really cool but why would you opt for EDM vs Laser? Would seem laser would give you many, many times more accuracy, more material selection.

Sounds great. I often have to wait 2-3 weeks for small parts and 4-5 weeks for big parts. Though they also come with calibration certificates so that contributes to lead times. Some of my parts require precision around 25 microns. Though some of the industrial machines are capable of around 2.5 microns, which I sometimes require. I know you're targeting the hobbyist though, so perhaps you will never reach this level of precision just to keep costs down. I love to see innovation in rapid prototyping area. You always hear about moores law - where is the law that governs mechanical improvements such as your product?

Why do the cut edges look so rough? I thought edm was supposed to be really clean. Is it a power issue?

If this becomes widespread as 3d printers it's really going to shake things up. Imagine the printer manufacturers start to get in on this.

I am a hobbyist machinist and metal worker, I have two lathes, a bridgeport mill and a surface grinder. I've wanted to buy a used wire edm machine but those available are usually ancient and non running and in need of repairs. This make be in my future, depending on the working envelop of the tool

I don’t know what your background is, but considering you noted that you had never designed a PCB I’d say it’s not electrical engineering and that is extremely impressive what you have done here. I am a Software Engineer and own my (as of 2024) 15 year young small software company, and between that and my prior corporate career I have been exposed to a lot of talented people, yet this is up there with the best of the best when it comes to making a massive donation to the open source community. I wish there were more people like you, but you have to take care of yourself too and I hope you are able to find profit in this. I can speak from experience that ensuring you can eat and at least pay for your current bills gives you substantially more time to improve upon what you have already done. You have taught us that a) this is doable in a home workspace, on a budget that is cheaper than a lot of the best 3DP’s and inspired us by showing and reminding us that we shouldn’t confine our beliefs by an “electric fence” (pun intended) that traps us inside a framework that assumes everything takes high end knowledge and machining. (I speak about your power resistor design of course. The fact that you were at only a 4 month investment when this video was posted a year ago, combined with the project as a whole should make for great resume content that ensures employment for a decade at least. Considering it’s been a year since this video and your website is outdated (I am not criticizing) tells me your either buried in the delivery period which began just a couple months ago, or another company with cash in their pockets has absorbed your talent into their own company’s creativity and idea machinery (hopefully the former). Even if you have hit a bunch of hurtles, for the price of just around $500 USD, plus GitHub, you have truly helped us all.

It's very impressive, but make it a $2500 edm and not 3d printer based. Right now a cheap fiber laser cutter can do what it does in 1% of the time (cut thin sheet metal). You've got a great start though!

love the idea and functionality. However, I buy tools to make small batch parts. I am more than a hobbiest, but less than a full blown protoype shop. I would be very interested in a fully built "kit" such as common P printers. Or better yet, a fully assembled version, like you get in the Bantam CNC machines. Either way, thanks for making this leap, and I will keep an eye out for future projects and advancements of your.

How is water filtration solved in this machine? Edm technology generates a lot of impurities - zerodized metal in the form of silt. Which is dangerous for moving parts immersed in water.

Brilliant design. I used to operate an industrial wire EDM and plunge EDM so I know what you are talking about. Generally, these are machines that can machine metal to an accuracy of 0.01 or even 0.005mm There is a basic condition - the machine body must be temperature stable. Your idea is great- maybe we won't achieve the accuracy of an industrial machine but yes the accuracy will be higher than for example 3d printing. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

$400 PSU is still quite a bit for what it is. I think I could come up with something replicable, reliable and simple for under $100 First thing that comes to my mind is cheap $10-20 server PSU with a step-up converter and whatever controls required to interface it.
