Waiting to hear that bike fire up. The ethanol being forced on us in Canada is destroying carbs. Hoping to convert me old (83) Goldwing to injection. Not sure if you have modified your tank yet, but engine exhaust, especially diesel has worked for me to weld storage tanks.

You can weld a gas tank by putting pieces of dry ice in it. The CO2 will displace the air in the tank because it is heavier. When the fog comes out the neck of the filler it should be safe. Enjoying your series.
@Blackthumbditch6 ай бұрын
Thanks pal. I'm guessing you are in the USA. In the UK it's not that easy to get dry ice. I had a look and it's only available online in 10kg quantities and it's very expensive. I think I should be ok without it though. There is no hint of petrol smell and the tank has been empty for years. I might wash it out with a weak soluble oil solution just in case.

I bought an identical GS750 second hand in 1979. I loved how it looked. Got a bank loan over 2 years at £50 per month. Unfortunately, I didn't really trust the bike, it moved around at speeds over 60mph like a bucking broncho and I couldn't afford to have it properly checked out. I'd had it 3 months when an uninsured and unemployed driver in a Hillman Imp pulled out on me, destroying the front end of the bike and injuring me and my pillion. He was prosecuted by the police but it was the only time I had TPFT insurance so although the bike needed extensive repairs and I was off work without pay for weeks, I had no insurance payout, racked up big debts and had 21 loan payments to go. I sold it for £100 as a fixer upper and was back on the bus until I paid off the loan and debts. Almost 20 bikes since then, currently riding a Ducati Monster 937.

What are you doing? The coils are called COP's - Coil on Plug for a reason - no plug wires to fail! Simple wire harness, plug to plug to plug, wrap and return to ECU! If you want oldskool look - just fit Dyna coils in original mounts for concealment - Greens or Greys work with most ECU's. Saying that, does your ECU work with COP's as they are VERY low impedence and usually get driven by a separate amplifier to give the ECU ign. transistors a break?
@Blackthumbditch7 ай бұрын
The ecu is from a triumph tt600 as is the coils. The ecu can only work with separate coils for each cylinder so I have no choice but I can't just put the stick coils straight on the plugs so I made the plug wire extensions. This is an experiment using cheap second hand parts to see if it can be done. Do you think the plug extensions would cause a problem? I have already tested the prototype and it seemed to work OK.

I remember there have been VWs (1978-1986) in California fitted with a very simple port injection (one in four). The bus i drove there was more powerful and saved much more gas compared to carb versions in Germany.

A couple of comments.. Firstly, it would be preferable to angle the runner (and obviously the TB's) up a little (around 10 to 15 degrees 'typically') to 'hit' the back of the valve. It's worth good power. Second, when doing the above, it's nicer to have the injector UNDER the runner as it aids fuel atomization as it cuts through the airflow. It also helps with part-throttle response as the throttle blades open. Thirdly, tuning with ITB's and MAP is HARD. You're gonna want to look at Alpha-N tuning (ie. throttle postion Vs RPM). A good video to explain this is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5Onc6anbbxkarc Otherwise.. loving the build.
@Blackthumbditch7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestions. Nothing is cast in stone yet and it might all change before I get the bike running. I am expecting a lot of trial and error with the tuning but if I can just get it running I will take it to a dyno and get a proper fuelling analysis.
@MrToranaGuy7 ай бұрын
Does the ecu your planning on running have an idle stepper motor to control the idle air bypass and thus idle speed of the engine?

Yes. It's a triumph tt600 ecu and iacv.

Kind of ironic, I quite liked early gs550 slide carbs as they were quite robust and tunable. They drop onto cb550's as the cylinder spacing is the same and the CB carbs were terrible as all the linkages were exposed and wore quickly whereas the GS ones were all sealed inside the carb bodies.
@Blackthumbditch7 ай бұрын
I hear you but this bike is an experiment :)
@keithcarpenter52547 ай бұрын
My gs 550 had cv carbs! Think it was a septic import, as bought it off a yank out of heyford. Fantastic mill. Just the bike needed a diet!😊
