always found the Nes to be very bland even when compared to the C64's pale colours. Some great games on the Nes of course but I never saw it as an upgrade. The Master System did at least look like it was but I stuck with the C64. The Nes and Master System both had that per line limit making for some horrible disappearing graphics too so they never appealed to me. Decent systems though with some very compelling games

Absolute trash console that hipster revisionists try to paint as "could have done even better than the MD and the SNES". No.

I don't remember if it used any enhancement chips, but you should check out Micro Mages! A somewhat recent game released for the NES that fits within the original 48KB cartridge design and looks *amazing*.

Are you serious! The best sounding game on the Famicom aka NES is r/\f World aka Journey to Silius. And taking into account the possible Famicom Disk System sound chip, Akumajou Densetsu is also in the lead.

I understand that the Game Boy Color displays more information on the screen (colors on screen, backgrounds and sprites), but I doubt that's the case. Colors renditions of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and Atlantic Adventures confirm this. And there should be many such examples.

What does the picture resolution on TV give when connecting a Famicom to it? What we see is not a real image, but one stretched to the size of a CRT TV (after all, this so-called monitor is close to the Famicom in aspect ratio), and this is many times greater than the resolution of the Game Boy. So the Game Boy Color lost not to the Famicom itself in terms of picture resolution, but to the stretched image on TV.

The portable consoles from SEGA and NEC that you mentioned were not competitors to the Famicom or Game Boy (including the Color version). Firstly, these laptops went missing in their own way. For example, SEGA Nomad was eating batteries. Secondly, SEGA Momad was not a competitor, but SEGA Game Gear, including its larger sister console, the SEGA Master System. Here it’s not just a related console, but the SEGA Game Gear hardware has been reduced to the SEGA Master System, without being technically limited, as is the case with the Famicom and Game Boy (including the Color version).

This video does the games a disservice as it's a 30FPS video and I imagine at least some of these games ran at 60. So this video ends up making those games look stuttery.

I loved that computer. It was my second computer. The Timex Sinclair 1000 was my first. The full sized real keyboard, sound and color blew my mind. It jump started my interest in computers. Especially in my digital electronics projects, thanks to the user and expansion ports giving me access to the hardware.

6:55 Sprites can cover the whole screen, by using all big sprites without overlapping you can avoid crossing any limits and even have some spare ones, as shown partially at 5:55 , or in the intro of road runner's rally.

I was wrong about the background at 5:55 , it uses hdma color 0 change, and way too few sprites. How clever.

If sms had 3d games without hardware scaling neogeo can do sprite scaling so they could have made a 3d fighter game like they did riding heroes! It may have been hard but not impossible!

So let me get this straight. Every time the Amiga had a better version then it was all to do with superior quality and hardware, but when the ST had the better version it was a glitch, lack of development time on the Amiga, or someone couldn't be bothered!?!?? No - not at all. For the record I had BOTH machines and loved them both. But the ST had better ports in 'some' games - NO excuses Amiga fan boys/girls.

OoooOOooh The original computer war! Actually, I still have both, still play both and still love both. I have to admit I did like Dungeon Master better on my STe 520 and if you want to play Sundog The Frozen Legacy, only the old Apple Mac or the ST are the only platforms in town outside of emulation.

I was never a real fan of the gamecube but i do consider it to be the rectified version of the N64 with better controllers, better graphics (no more blurry textures and ugly anti aliassing),more easy to use (no need to swap ram modules or difficulties with adding or removing a power supply to it) I consider supermario sunshine to look amezing as well conpared to supermario 64 wigh more and much sharper more colorful textures and much more polygons, i also do got fond memories of that game since i was reliving and start to live on my own back in 2009, i can’t believe that we are already 15 years futher in time phew, I also do consoder need for speed underground looking amezing, i was always used with the gba version but this ngc version just destroys it in every way.

While it is true that the snes does have a dedicated 16bit soundchip and the gba only does have a non-dedicated 8bit soundchip, so on paper that should mean that snes audio in most games are always better then in those games on the gba right??? Well i HATE to say it as a huge snes fan but that’s sadly NOT always the case, that’s because while the gba can play true 8bit samples at desired length’s you want, most snes games do use 4bit adpcm samples wich were cut & stretched to fit all within that 64KB audio ram, the snes then tries to convert those adpcm samples back to 16bit by filling in those gaps with the missing data and theres also a lowpass filter to surpress noise, but as a result of this, it can sound muffled, flat noisy and dry,, supermario allstars is sadly a great example of this, just compare those sound effects and instruments with those gba versions of games like mario 3 and you can hear that the sound is very flat & dry while on the gba version it sounds more dynamic and fuller (trough i mostly don’t like those used instruments in the gba version) So what do you rather want, full length 8bit audio or cut & stretched 4bit audio being upconverted to 16bit ??? Now there is a way to get around that 64bit KB audio ram on the snes wich will allow you to play full length adpcm audio upsampled back to 16bit but that requires audio swapping and it requires more bandwide but this way cut & stretching the audio can be avoided resulting in much better audio quality But sadly only a few snes games do use that audio ram as a buffer to allow more and better audio quality on the snes, Also i freaking HATE to say it but i must admit that i do like those small touches of improvements in the gba versions of those supermariobros games such containing extra contents and effects etc,,, am mean while i was always fine with supermario allstars but seeing those fixes & improvements in those gba versions of those games just adds a bit extra of flavor to those games.

When NFS Carbon showed up I thought it was some kind of joke. Underground 1 looks way better, but none of these should be in a list like this. StarFox Adventure, Metroid Prime 1&2 and Mario Sunshine are better examples.

Hello, I would like to mention "Mortevielle Mannor". Although the Amstrad graphics are not surprisingly as good as on Atari ST, the Amstrad wins over the Atari ST when we think about the sound. Both versions include an amazing vocal synthesis, but the Amstrad version also includes fully digitized sounds for the ambiance, while the ST version only makes use of synthetic sounds. The solution to the game is well-known, but only few people understand it. In this video, I give my own detailed explanation for the solution: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJXMkpeVaJpnq6c

I thought at the time that Wind Waker was one of the best-looking games I'd ever seen, and all the moaning about the graphics made me very sad about the state of the game industry at that time.

Also, the Wii U port of Wind Waker does not look nearly as good! The colour is wrong, the bloom effect is way too much, and the wonderful cartoony pools of light that were such a memorable feature of the original have been replaced with boring "regular" lights. And it's such a shame because they've fixed some issues, it looks great in HD and having your map and inventory on the Wii U controller is really nice. I only wish it looked as good as the Gamecube game... if they had just left it as it was.

I know I’m a little late to the party, but I wanted to add something about the sprite flickering. This was something that had to be programmed for. The NES would natively only display the first 8 sprites on a single line, after that they would just be invisible. What companies did was they would either shuffle the sprites around in memory to show each sprite on successive frames, or they would pick a priority sprite(such as the player) and cycle the rest. It’s actually a very nuanced solution to a major problem.

How is collision handled? When the polygons are shown in the viewer the boundary edges are sometimes much higher than the character is shown walking. If collision was done detecting the boundary of the polygon box the main character would look like it was floating above the platform.
