So the suggestion is that the older peoples were the more organised, even if not more advanced. Is this a function of being on the land as an established civilisation for many thousands of years before the Bell beaker arrival? They would have the network, the family and historic ties to different groups in different parts of the country. Quick thought, which might be a correction, but of course I might be mistaken, and not you, but I thought it was the adrenals, and not the gall bladder, that if eaten by carnivorous folk, prevents scurvy. Adrenals contain a high concentration of ascorbic acid, rather than bile (from the gall bladder). Clearly grains represent serious trouble for humans, and always have been. I'll get that book, 'Against the Grain' as it looks like my sort of info. There is another book I highly recommend, called 'The Dorito Effect' where the author goes into some of the ins and outs of the food flavouring industry. It's a fantastic read, and also discusses the human trials that went on about 100 years ago, using babies and toddlers in a way that would certainly not pass the ethics board today! Fascinating though.

The hillfort builders were thieves of agricultural surplus. The forts were there to protect themselves against the farmers they stole from. Forts evolved into cIties and cities are entirely dependent on acquiring the surplus from the rural regions, otherwise they wouldn't exist. How they acquire it, is usually a combination of force, taxation, violence, extortion and assorted methods.
