So the suggestion is that the older peoples were the more organised, even if not more advanced. Is this a function of being on the land as an established civilisation for many thousands of years before the Bell beaker arrival? They would have the network, the family and historic ties to different groups in different parts of the country. Maybe Silbury hill was a huge flex to show the Bell beaker the prowess of the civilisation they were intruding upon, or maybe it was to remind the original neolithic peoples of their own greatness, as they saw their culture being replaced. Like a huge national project to be proud of. Parallels with today maybe, when we try to remind ourselves of our history with these rallies. How long before we build a Silbury hill of our own?

Hi Dr Cornish Dale, great to hear this interview. Quick thought, which might be a correction, but of course I might be mistaken, and not you, but I thought it was the adrenals, and not the gall bladder, that if eaten by carnivorous folk, prevents scurvy. Adrenals contain a high concentration of ascorbic acid, rather than bile (from the gall bladder). Clearly grains represent serious trouble for humans, and always have been. I'll get that book, 'Against the Grain' as it looks like my sort of info. There is another book I highly recommend, called 'The Dorito Effect' where the author goes into some of the ins and outs of the food flavouring industry. It's a fantastic read, and also discusses the human trials that went on about 100 years ago, using babies and toddlers in a way that would certainly not pass the ethics board today! Fascinating though.

The hillfort builders were thieves of agricultural surplus. The forts were there to protect themselves against the farmers they stole from. Forts evolved into cIties and cities are entirely dependent on acquiring the surplus from the rural regions, otherwise they wouldn't exist. How they acquire it, is usually a combination of force, taxation, violence, extortion and assorted methods.

Pastoralists v Agriculturalists. This sounds so much like the Aryan invasion of Europe. We can see how agriculture gods (Greek Titans & Norse Vanir) were superseded by Indo-European gods, like the Olympians & the Æsir.

Doesn’t explain why one population would build (forts) while the other didn’t. It’s not a tit-for-tat, cattle raiding conflict, there’s some other dynamic going on.
@FredScuttle4562 сағат бұрын
@@Inquisitor_Vex Each of these forts were built, rebuilt and re-rebuilt over many hundreds of years. The first generation has a wooden hut with a turf roof. Not much to do at the weekends, so they sling up a circular earth mound to prevent the cattle and pigs from getting out. The next generation make it bigger. The grandkids add an outer ditch and mound. Their extended family add a further ring. Conspicuous wealth makes them a target for any clan whose crops have failed, so they need a defensive structure. 3,000+ forts means 3,000+ family-clans.

@@Inquisitor_Vex Nobody compelled you to read it. 3,000+ hillforts seems like a lot. Every hill fort started very small and was rebuilt over many hundreds of years. 3,000+ doesn't seem a lot any more.
