I remember as a young girl trying to make sense of these terms, particularly the use of "Fascist." At one point --- I believe it was when an article in The Nation casually referred to the libertarian Milton Friedman as a Fascist --- I realized that the terms have no independent ,rational meaning. They simply describe positions relative to the Left. If you are "on the wrong side of history," that is, if you do not believe in or support the inevitable triumph of Marxism, you are on the "right." The more you oppose the Movement, the further "right-wing" and "fascistic" you are. That's it.

That's a pretty good assessment, but also take into account how seriously the Socialists / Marxists of whatever flavour take a threat. In the UK and the US their major threats that they have truly gone after (because they are their biggest threats) in recent years/decades are Farage/UK leaving the EUSSR Socialist Utopia project, Rommy Tobinson and his exposure of two things, the massive and coordinated government cover-up and of course the thing they are desperately trying to cover up, which they have now gone full throttle on with the Green-Red Alliance (not the watermelons, the other one) under the LAST government (BoJo), and of course Trump in the US.

The thing is that the D.R. lacks consolidation. You have a lot of people from Christian nationalists to neo-reactionaries to nietzscheans who only really agree on the fact that the left is bad and the mainstream right is ineffective but otherwise don't really like one another.

Left vs right, in a pre-WWII sense, is a yardstick of state control of production vs. private enterprise. In those terms, Stalin is far left & H***er trails an inch to his right but is still extremely left-wing.

Only by exhaustive vetting of the population for the required mindset, and exile if they failed to live up to expectations, could he have made it work.

@@MottIrregular You assume that he even had any ethical expectations though. It's explicitly stated that he didn't, his only expectation was the person's excellence in their craft. Rapture was doomed to devolve to the state it's shown in the game, the whole Atlas rebellion was just a B-plot. They started to use genetically modified children to farm underwater superpower slime, as well as doing other immoral things, long before Atlas came into view. At least if i remember correctly, it's been a while since i played it.

Englishmen (and Anglosphere culture in general) disagrees across all manner of fundamental cultural, social, and political questions with Russians (who are obviously also fair-skinned Caucasians; but had a wildly different cultural development across their history). You can be an Englishman (or an American of English descent loyal to the American Founding Fathers), but there's no Pan-Racial Identity (for any race for that matter).

Conservatism is conserving the last political paradigm. That’s it. For example, the Founding Fathers of the US were the radicals of their time. The conservatives in their era wanted to stay a colony of the English. And now the conservatives of America want to preserve the Constitution. Or some conservatives want to preserve 1950s America which is a corporate facade. Conservatism for conservatism sake is just as bad as progressivism for progressivism sake. This was shown by the right wing backlash towards questioning the post WWII consensus. Why should we conserve the post WWII consensus? It’s only dictated all of Western foreign policy since WW2 which has been disastrous for everyone yet some conservatives want to preserve it. It’s ridiculous.
