I rode the entirety of Japan's most remote train route. It goes north from Kushiro in eastern Hokkaido. The Senmo Line has some of Japan's least-used stations along it, and ends at the rough and tumble city of Abashiri on the Sea of Okhotsk. After that, I rode an Oyuki limited express on the Sekihoku Line through bigger mountains to Japan's coldest city, Asahikawa. On this six-hour odyssey, I saw thrilling snowy landscapes, looked for a glimpse of Hokkaido's deer and foxes, was stunned by huge chunks of endless pack ice bobbing in the ocean near Abashiri, and became mesmerized by the beauty of a train route through some otherwise completely inaccessible terrain. An experience like no other in the world.
