clear PEVA shower curtain material lets a LOT more radiant heat thru (into a supershelter) than is the case with VisiKleen and PEVA wont crack in the cold, while normal plastic sheeting DOES. I assembled a "bag" out of two of SOL''s ' 5x8 ft "heat sheets" and two sleeping bag zippers. I normally use this 1/2 lb assembly to "envelope" the 1.5 lb XL size Trifecta bivy from 2GoSystems, I pull a 1 lb net hammock and a ridgeline thru the bivy. I also pull a ridgeline thru space between the bivy and the envelope. The bivy cannot be allowed to touch either you nor the envelope. you NEED those two layers of trapped air. With this setup and just cammies, I can sleep ok at 40F degrees. If I have two of amazon's 1/2 lb each "cut-leaf" type of camo nets and two of their 1/4 lb each. full body "bug net "suits", worn as longjohns, I can sleep ok at 25F, inside of the bivy and the envelope. There's about 1/2 lb of stakes, paracord, tape, drum-liner and PEVA, so the total is 5 lbs. Because of the many configuations that this gear can be set up in, it's superb. none of it is effected by its getting wet. It's all useful in hot weather, it's all wearable as clothing. I use both a 1 lb fanny pack and a 1.5 lb daypack. I do carry stuff MOLLE-d to the outside of the packs, but the drum liner envelopes everything, insuring that nothing can get lost (or wet) I use the two packs as sleeping pads, normally full of dry debris and up in the hammock, but I've used them on the ground and with no debris. I've used wraps of the hammock to hold lots of dry debris around me and laid on a raised pole bed, full of debris, When it's that cold, wetness is not an issue, as long as you beat the snow-ice off of the debris before using it to make the bed. I also carry the UCO lantern and a spare Beeswax candle. With the extended base and the reflector, it's a versatile piece of gear. If you know to add hot rocks or hot water bottels to the footbox of the bivy, and the UCO beyond your head, that's worth another 10F degrees (if inside of the supershelter). Then you dont have to go outside as often to push the Siberian fire 's logs further into the flames. :-) I dont care much for the idea of 8 ft long, 8" OD logs. Such are not to be found in my area and felling/moving them is likely to result in injury. 6 ft long, 4" OD logs are more like what I have to use here. So I drive 4 stakes, stack 3 logs between them as a "wall" and lay the Siberian's burn logs across this wall. If you dont want to have to replace the "wall logs' pretty often, you can soften frozen ground with a fire, dig a pit and then use hot stones, ice or snow in the pit to make mud, Plaster the fire side of the wall with 3" of mud and the wall wont catch fire.

I use both a 1 lb fannypack and a 1.5 lb day pack. I empty them out , pack them with debris and use them as sleeping pads, normally in the hammock. Even if the debris is wet, the empty packs still trap a bit of air and serve to keep me warm, at least a bit. I use a drum liner as a pack-wrap, so nothing can fall off or get lost. The sleepl/shelter gear is made to serve as a pack frame. I achieve this by folding it, rollling it up, and lashing it to the top of the fannypack. Then the daypack rides on that gear-roll. I had to add a much wider and stiffer belt to the fannypack. My spare T shirt and boxers are my hip pads and my spare socks are my shoulder pads. I painted the heat sheet and the tyvek coveralls camo. and dyed the socks and underwear OD green. If I want to be seen, i can always turn the heat sheet "envelope" inside out. :-)

@@EsyuDach Sounds like it works for you, alot of thought was put into it. This shelter has seen many freezing nights and set up is 5 mins. Happy 2025
@EsyuDach5 күн бұрын
if i can add dry debris between the bugnet suits and the wraps of camo netting, I can handle another 10F degrees of cold. If I can heat up some rocks or water bottles, same thing. If it's below 0F, then I have to go to the super shelter, and the Siberian fire lay. Having to mess with a fire is a royal PITA. , but it's only necessary once every 3-4 hours, if you have the hot water bottles and the supershelter. This is with 4" OD logs. If you have bigger logs and can cut and move them, you can go longer without having to move the logs, but that's starting to be injury-prone stuff
@EsyuDach5 күн бұрын
clear PEVA shower curtain works better for letting in radiant heat. Tape together a couple of 5x8 ft SOL heat sheets. Add a double of sleeping bag zippers, so you can open it flat, or use this assembly as an "envelope" around an XL size bivy from 2Go Systems. Pull a net hammock and a ridgeline thru the bivy and another ridgeline between the bivy and the envelope. The bivy cannot be allowed to touch you or the envelope. This set up in just cammies, lets me sleep ok at 40 F. If I add a couple of amazon bugnet suits, and a couplel fo their "cut leaf" camo nets, all worn as long johns and and then utiize a set of tyvek coveralls,I can sleep ok at 30F. Not bad for such a lw, compact set up

Why do they put feckin allen heads or torx on survival rifles? In a survival situation a flat head is way more practical. Lose an allen or torx key and you're screwed. A flathead can be easily improvised.

Hi Wayne, hope you had a good Christmas. This last summer I picked up a LiTime battery as a trolling motor for one of my canoes. works great, got an AC charger and a DC charger for my old PV system. I ran my home off grid for a bout 20 years. Some canoe trips I will use this battery to power my motor and for charging other items and lighting at camp etc. I need to get a portable PV panel to put some charge back in it. It will be a boost for those head wind open lake travel times. Some will call it blasphemy, but its My canoe. Its some fun tech to play with. It has a shunt and monitor I hooked up, thought I would be cute and tried jumping an old diesel school bus I have, hook the cables up and turned the key and I blew something in the shunt or monitor, so got to trouble shoot that.

All three are good options. Back in the day there were a lot of take down .22 rifles but they weren't sold with the survival moniker attached. The Browning Trombone comes to mind. The Browning SA22 is probably still pick of the litter but it isn't inexpensive. The Marlin Papoose was a good rifle but more complicated internally than the Henry or Savage, the Ruger 10/22 take downs used to come in a million flavors and aren't bad either. Merry Christmas Wayne!

I did a test on several 22lr ammo a month ago. The rifle was a Henry U.S. Survival Rifle. Below are the results of the test, thought you might be interested in the results. Update on problems. I loaded all five of my clips with 8 rounds of. 22 LR CCI Mini Mag, 1235 fps, 40 grain copper plated round nose. Clips 1 thru 4 worked well, even the one I dropped and reshaped. Clip number 5 had only 1 jam. Clip 1: 10 yards, Pattern size, of a nickel 21 mm or 3/4 inches. Clip 2: 15 yards, Pattern size, 1.5 dimes 28 mm 1.1 inches. Clip 3: 20 yards, Pattern size, 3.5 inches. Barrel knot was loose. I tightened the nut. Clip 4: 25 yards, Pattern size, a penny and a nickel wide 40 mm or 1 and 5/8 inches. Clip 5: 20 yards, Pattern size, 2 quarters 45mm or 1 and 3/4 inches. One jam on bullet 4. I have always had problems with this clip and always on the 4th and 7th round. With the exception of the problem clip 5, the CCI ammo worked fine. I also shot some other brands of ammo. I will list those results in a separate update. @robertkelley3437 3 weeks ago @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors AR-7 Survival Rifle by Henry I used the same clip for the different ammo. I checked and if needed tightened the barrel nut after each test. All the tests done at 15 yards. All the measurements taken from outside edge to the outside edge. Test 1: CCI Mini Mag, 22 LR, 40 grain, Copper Plated Round Nose, 1235 fps, 8 Rounds, 15 yards, Pattern size, 1.5 dimes, 28 mm, 1.1 inches. No Jams or misfires. Test 2: Remington Golden Bullet High Velocity, 22 LR, 36 grain, plated hollow point, 1280 fps, 8 rounds. 15 yds. Pattern size, 1.5 dimes, 28 mm, 1.1 inches. No Jams or misfires. Test 3: Federal Punch Flat Nose, 22 LR, 29 grain, Lead, 1070 fps, 8 rounds, 15 yards. Pattern size IKE Dollar and a nickel by an IKE Dollar and a dime, 60 mm by 54 mm, 2 and 3/8 inch by 2 and 1/8 inch. No jams or misfires. Test 4: Winchester 22 LR 40 grain, Super speed Round Nose Copper Plated, 1300 fps, 8 rounds, 15 yards, Pattern size A Quarter and a nickel, 47mm long by 20mm wide, 1 1/2 by 3/4 wide. No jams or misfires. Test 5: CCI Stinger 22LR 32 grain Copper Plated Hollow Point, 1640 fps, 8 rounds, 15 yards, Pattern size, A nickel and a dime, 37mm by 25 mm, 1 1/2 inch by 1 inch. No jams or misfires. Test 6: CCI Mini-Mag 22 LR HP Copper Plated Hollow Point, 1260 fps, 8 rounds, 15 yds. Pattern size, a Quarter plus, 25mm long by 24 mm wide, 1 inch by 15/16 inch. No jams of Misfires. There is one problem inherent with all 22 ammos, that are the misfires. The primer tends to separate from the base of the shell casing and the strike hits dead space. I rotate the bullet 180 degrees and try it again and it usually goes bang. This problem tends to happen if the ammo is handles roughly. It is also more common of a problem in the loose pack boxes of bulk ammo. On the Survival rifle I found a lot of the jams are caused by the shooter holding the clip while shooting, Hold the barrel nut or the barrel, that corrects a lot of the jamming problems. Also, the barrel nut does have a tendency to loosen up while shooting a lot. So tighten the barrel nut occasionally.
