I have the same one, read that this machine is preferable to the more recent one with the belt option. Use mine for both metal and wood. Like it much better than the cylinders I used in the drillpress before, think it is the oscillating motion that makes the difference.

Yes I started with the cylinders on the drill press. They are alright aren't they, but this is tons better. I never really fancied the newer one that is belt and cylinder, because I got the impression that I would spent a lot of time switching over between the belt and the cylinders. As it is, in my workshop this machine sits right next to my belt sander, and I spend quite a bit of time moving from one to the other ... without having to spend any time changing anything :-)

Doesn't look easier to me! The prongs on that buster are already bent out of shape. I like the maul/sledge. The hydraulic jack DOES fit, just remove the wheels by pulling the cotter pins and cut 2" off the top.

All through this build I have had my reservations, but it has turned out rather nice. Well done you! It is surprising what you can do with a pallet, I just make storage boxes with them, but that's what I enjoy making. I'm pleased you appeared to get the logo's sorted, that makes a big difference, it sort of shows the wood heritage. Nice touch.

Are these your own planters, or refurbing for a customer as the base came away? Also do you sell them online or local? How is the market for planters in your area? If I look at FB marketplace during the summer there are planters for sale from a few different people but it's hard to know if they're selling or not as they just keep as a perpetual listing.

These are my own very early prototypes. I always keep the first few of anything that I make, as I tend to use them as a learning exercise. I soon learned that the bottoms needed to be screwed on as well as glued :-) I sell online at craftingrob.sumupstore.com/category/planters and also on FB marketplace.

Did you use a random orbital to sand the legs then? Also what varnish did you use for the top?
@frompallets
@frompallets Ай бұрын
Yes at 1:40 into the video I clamped the legs together to give me a bigger surface to work with, and then used the random orbital sander to sand them. The varnish was Ronseal Yatch Varnish. It gives a lovely deep, slightly darkened, finish, and is waterproof in terms of being able to put drinks down on it without leaving marks. The only down side is that it is oil based rather than water based, so you have to clean the brushes with white spirit rather than just soap and water.

I'm very lucky in two ways. Firstly we don't really recycle pallets here in the Isle of Man, so I have a plentiful supply of people wanting me to take theirs away so that they don't have to pay to dispose of them, and secondly, I have a large barn to store them in, so I spent the dry summer collecting far more pallets than I needed, so that over the wet winter, I have a ready supply of dry pallets to work on :-)

@kevinansell9341 It's not perfect but I find it perfectly usable for keeping sawdust out and also providing major protection for my full face, from flying objects. I can't believe that sawdust is going to find it's way round to the back of my head and somehow sneak through the tiny gap between my glasses arms and my ears and the mask. I wouldn't use it as a solution to protect myself in a chemical gas attack, but for keeping sawdust particles put of my lungs, in my opinion, it's a perfect solution, but that's just a personal opinion.

This build was a while ago, but I *think* it took a couple of hours from start to finish ... I think. I use the smooth rather than ticking, and I get the mechanisms in a variety of lengths, short medium and long, and then for each clock I try to find a length of shaft that either fits straight away, or that requires the least amount of drilling out on the back of the clock to get it to fit properly. Basically each clock is different depending on the wood that I'm dealing with

Sorry I thought I had replied to this on my phone, but can't now see the reply anywhere. The build was a long time ago so I can't remember exact details, but I think that this video covered about a two hour period ... I think. I buy my clock mechanisms (all silent sweep movements) in bulk off ebay, and get job lots with 11mm, 15mm, 18mm and 21mm shafts. I then try to select a length that involves the least amount of drilling out of material from the back of the clock. Each one is different depending on the wood.

Great series and loads of useful info I will be using moving forward. Question: At these fairs do you take orders or have been asked if you take orders or even commisions for a build ? Just thought I would mention I can actually taste all that sawdust hanging on your Tool Board, Not a criticism as that area must be a nightmare to keep dust free 😷
@frompallets
@frompallets Ай бұрын
@kevinansell9341 Ha ha, yes dust is a big problem for me as I don't have very good dust extraction system. I concentrate on trying to keep it out of my eyes and lungs, but as a result, the rest of the workshop suffers. I look at videos of some workshops where I feel as though I could eat my food off their work surfaces, and I have NO idea how they do that! To answer your question about taking orders and commissions at fairs, yes I absolutely do. I take a clipboard and a number of pre printed order forms that I have tweaked over the years to capture just the right amount of information for me, without being over bearing. I also have a healthy supply of business cards to hand out, and make sure that anyone that expresses an interest in ordering a customized product some time in the future, takes one away with them. My record was handing out about 200 business cards over the space of a 2 day fair in the summer, which did indeed lead to a number of commissions, so it was worth it.

Have subscribed to your channel and Looking forward to seeing the coffee table build progress. Was thinking it maybe a bit big and would benefit from being cut down to around three planks wide. They are actually one of my best sellers since I got a laser engraver and put our Isle of Man national emblem on one side. I'm only charging £1.50 each for them, and with the laser engraving included they take a ridiculous amount of time for that price, however it gets people opening their wallets at my stall, and that quite often leads to selling them a bigger more profitable item :-)

is the sanding pad not supposed to spin at all, or spin very slowly? (as in, able to watch it spin with the naked eye) I gave this a go today and using the 60 grit pad that came with it, I am struggling to remove material at any where near an acceptable rate even compared to my tiny detail finishing orbit sander (those 'mouse' things) which is an old cheap thing from a decade ago. I'm not sure if it's broken or something and try and return it back to Screwfix or not. I'm using it on fibreglass and bodyfiller which should easily sand away.
@frompallets
@frompallets 3 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure mine doesn't spin, I can't remember holding it upside down very often to look, but the base moves in "random" (small) circles, hence why it doesn't leave marks unlike a belt sander that is always moving in a predictable manner. I use 40 grit to remove the worst, before moving down to 80, 120, 150, 180, but I will admit that even at 40, it is reasonably slow at removing wood, but that's part of why it doesn't leave marks. I tend to think of it as a finishing sander, so I'll remove the unevenness with a planner, or belt sander depending on how bad it is, and then "finish it" with the orbital sander. I've never tried it on fiberglass, but I would have thought that "set" fiberglass would be pretty tough, but that may just be my inexperience with fiberglass.

Hi, less than a couple of minutes into your video, I felt inspired to finally remove the well-worn blade on my table saw. It's off, cleaned and ready to be replaced with a ripping blade to work on some softwood. Table saws are, on the whole, easier to work with when it comes to changing blades. It is always a faff with mitre saws as just about everything needs removing, and carefully replacing - checking for missed items - before using. If you are anything like me, I can assure you, that you probably won't remember how to do it next time. But that's what KZbin is for.
