Gants Hill Odeon holds core late 80s & 90s childhood memories for me. I saw The little Mermaid,, The Lion King, Honey I shrunk the Kids!, Star wars the phantom menace, Dick Tracy, Blade, Three men and a baby, baby's day out, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Super Mario bros, The Green mile, Batman & Robin, Dead presidents, Menace 2 Society, Friday, The Matrix, Belly. To name a few, and many more. I still have one or two faded ticket stubs. I'd go at the weekends, with my whole family sometimes we'd get dressed up and my dad would drive all six of us in his Ford Granada, from Balfour road 5mins to Gants Hill Odeon 😅. I would go with my mates from school and my GF and play the Arcade machines they had in the lobby until the movie started. I just loved going for the popcorn and pick n mix. The big screen 1 seemed huge back then and it was nice having the ice cream sellers walking around with those trays hanging from their neck. My pops would always complain but still buy us all a Hagen Daz. Good times😢

The owners of the site are sitting on a goldmine, and they know it and want to cash in. Can't blame them however it'll be a shame to lose another old style building with so much history. With the newly built high rise flats on either side of this site, its only a matter of time I reckon before Redbridge give the green light.

I don't know if the museum has ever had it on display, but after my father died, I donated his old RAF uniform to them, along with a brief rundown of his life story. Apart from his spell in the Air Force, he always lived in the area, I think he would be happy to know his story was being used in the museum.

It would be really nice if it was on display with a bit about his life. They have recently updated and reopened the museum and if it isn't there it's bound to have been kept safe in their copious archive.

Another awesome video. Surprised the residential development at Sainsbury's was passed, but when that much money is involved, I shouldn't b. Hope the infrastructure grows, its gonna need more surgeries, schools, a better road system, buses and trains to name afew. The council doesn't seems to take that into consideration
@IlfordRetro2 ай бұрын
I think Sainsbury's saw how much open land there was in front of their store, they realised they were sitting on a gold mine if flats could be built on it. With the present day narrative of "we need to build more housing" I think the Council felt it was a no brainer. That part of town will change immensely once it's all done. I agree, there must be suitable infrastructure to manage the change and hopefully some joined up thinking between service providers will happen.

I worked for a, then very large multinational company, with the very same name ILFORD (Film) way back in 1977. Its headquarters were based in the outer of suburbs of Melbourne ( Australia). I’ve often wondered about the connection between the township called ILFORD and the company. I think it just used the townships name ( way back around 1900). Can you throw further light on this? Ps: This is the first time by the way, that I’ve seen the township of ilford!
@IlfordRetro3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment and welcome to Ilford! It seems you worked for the one and only Ilford (Film/Photo) Limited. You're right that the photographics company was named after this town, which a Mr Alfred Hugh Harman based his business in. He set up working on photographic plates in his basement on a main road in the town called Cranbrook Road. As the business grew he moved it to a large site near a local river called the Roding. This was back in 1880 and it operated and became internationally known from that site for nearly 100 years. Mr Harman died in 1913 but his legacy and the town's name continues today. Unfortunately for Ilford, the company moved its base away from the town in 1976. It is still based in the UK, but 'up north' in Cheshire and has been the subject of takeovers several times. Fortunately the name is so well established in the photographics industry that despite the takeovers, it lives on today as Ilford Photo.

That is a great claim to fame relating to the building's history. I can imagine it was quite something to attend a concert in the venue. From what I read at the time of writing this episode, I think some of the original features were covered over rather than destroyed, so I too would be interested in seeing if any original features live on. The exterior of the building, while rebranded over the years, seems as it was when first built, which is nice to see.

ILFORD HIGH ROAD is died
@divinity1763 ай бұрын
We used to shelter in the entrance of Ratners one the way home from school, getting off the 86 and waiting for the 169. The Dixons (I think it was a Dixons, not 100%) on the corner had a demo unit of the original Nintendo - we figured out it had a switch on the back that would put it into normal mode. Would bunk school and spend hours in there playing it. I went and stayed in Ilford for two weeks this summer because of this channel 🙂 Wasn't as big a shock as it otherwise might have been had I not seen all the videos. Considering all the decades, it hasn't really changed that much - a lot of the shop changes are like for like, and some of the bigger changes were a long time coming e.g. Pioneer Market and Centreway had been dying for a long time. One sad change that did strike me was all the homelessness. I passed arrays of blankets in the underpasses, outside the library and by the entrance of Lynton House. One notable absence was the Jehovah's Witness on the high road! He was there every weekend.
@IlfordRetro3 ай бұрын
I'm so pleased to read that you made the trip back. It's so nice that this channel was motivation and that some of the changes were not as shocking as some comments may describe. I love the stories of getting round demo settings on the old consoles or even just catching music videos through a TV shop window while waiting at bus stops...simple things like that seem to be a thing of the past. You are quite right about the level of destitution in the town. There are some homeless shelters, the containers by the Town Hall run by the Salvation Army are some of the newer ones, but they all seem to be over subscribed. Oh yes - that bearded preacher with the booming voice in the High Road! The present day equivalent is the mute football skills entertainer (did you see him?) often outside the Exchange. In his own way he is making a similar name for himself in the minds of Ilford's shoppers.

I worked in both buildings. I was even on the project team during the rebuild. The operation moved to temporary accommodation in Clark’s Road, next to the swimming baths. The original recorder house had such character, the new one was beautiful but soulless. I’m not surprised they knocked it down. There’s a time capsule buried there, but probably dug up now. Not that anyone needs a time capsule from 2006
@IlfordRetro3 ай бұрын
Great to hear from someone who worked in both buildings. I did wonder how it felt to go from that 60s building to the very futuristic one and it's not really surprising to hear it was soulless. Intriguing that there was a time capsule there! You're probably right that it has likely been dug up as part of the new ownership's demolition of the short-lived replacement, and hopefully not just crushed to pieces by a digger, but offered back to The Recorder group. Perhaps that's unlikely though!

Ilford was a nice town not well known and we liked it that way. They gentrified it by building sky scrappers which is not in keeping with the town. Brought a lot of people to the town and became over crowded, plus they closed our swimming pool to cater for a new school

There are a few more skyscrapers bring planned, some of which will be at the Sainsbury's site. What we hope is that the infrastructure to cater for the added population comes along with it and doesn't impact the services currently being offered.
