Thanks for the videos. Have you considered putting the 3d files for your servo mounts on something like thingyverse so those with printers can print their own? A bit like the business model used with card building kits?

I'd love to know more about your fume extraction setup? It looks like you have a plastic pipe behind the machine at some points which looks "posable" - is that connected directly to an external extractor fan or something? I have a now slightly older Ortur 20w diode laser and the smell from a long cutting job, even with air assist and a conventional extractor running further down the room, is pretty awful ...

Thank you James. I'm a bit late to the game, as my recent layout planning showed me that I need some custom turnouts, and with some dread I started to re-visit hand-built track. The ability to 3D print the timber/sleeper blocks, Bullhead chairs, and filing jigs custom for each project is a game changer, making the task of custom built turnouts and other complex trackwork not only simpler, but affordable. Makes it more affordable than even ready to run turnouts! Even so, I found my initial look at Templot daunting, though I'm not unfamiliar with CAD and 3d printing. Your videos have cleared the fog away. Thank you again. One question about an earlier video - you used an OS map as a background to lay out the trackwork in Templot. I didn't see how you added the map and scaled it correctly. Did I miss that from an earlier video? Regards, Jay

Hi James, Another very informative video, I can also see a big advantage to a bigger bed area, can't wait to see part two when you increase the bed size. I would be keen to see how they handle the honeycomb? is it two units sat side by side or one bigger honeycomb? Two units would have the disadvantage of having a non honeycomb area right in the middle of the work area. I also like the included hold-down clips a great idea. Just a question you mentioned you have laser cut your own hold downs in the past, could you maybe show us one of your hold down designs in the next video. cheers phil

So the bare minimum is the machine with 10W laser, the honeycomb base and the airpump, and then you'd need to DIY a smoke extractor? And (sorry ifyou mentioned this and I missed it) what kind of material can it cut? Like from the sound of it with a 10W laser I'm not gonna be making plywood baseboard components with this
@ausfoodgarden24 күн бұрын
They say 20mm wood or acrylic for the 10W laser But I'm guessing you'd have to do a good few passes to cut that deep and there would be a fair bit of charring. I've got a 20W laser cutter and it does a good job on 9mm ply - I haven't tried anything thicker. Algolaser says their 20w can cut up to 30mm thick timber.

James, you have an enclosure for your laser. There is a kit available which includes an enclosure - their Safe kit option, is it worth getting the safe kit or purchasing an enclosure separately from a different supplier?
@BexhillWest24 күн бұрын
I would recommend an enclosure and decent extraction for every laser machine. In this video I set the machine up without an enclosure such that the smoke generated could be seen. One of the surprising benefits of a low power laser such as this is that 10W really doesn't produce that much smoke. If I were running my big CO2 laser then the whole workspace would cloud up without extraction. In this case the smoke generated was much less, which is a welcome benefit/side effect of a lower power laser. I'm not familiar with the safe kit enclosure option, and suspect it won't fit the machine with the bed extension kit. I think it just for the basic machine, but I would expect it to be well made and fit for purpose. As for whether it's worth getting the safe kit. I couldn't say, I've no experience of it. However, one of the things I plan to do with this machine is design a simple enclosure which could be simply built in a DIY style using basic hand tools. Literally a plywood surround with an acrylic sheet over the top would work, and be in the spirit of the DIY kit ethos. For the enclosure I plan to build for the machine I purchased a creality extraction fan with a flexible hose for about £15, the rest will be build with everyday materials using lessons learned from having used a variety of other machines. A pull-out drawer for example through which the waste is collected and removed, would be a nice-to-have option. With that said, AlgoLaser produce a gadget called a Smart Hub, which allows their accessories to integrate with the laser control panel should you wish to switch the extraction on/off automatically. As an aside, There are a number of features in the operating system which I hadn't expected too see, especially support for external devices such as the air assist and extraction. These options cannot be used with the basic machine as supplied (minus the Smart Hub), but their inclusion suggests to me that AlgoLaser are thinking ahead and building future capability into the basic control. I will cover all of this in more depth in Part 2, and reserve my full judgement until then. I'll also ask whether AlgoLaser might send an enclosure for me to have a look as well so that I can answer your question more comprehensively. I hope my rambling is of some help. Best wishes, James

James, just watched this episode again, and a thought surfaced while watching the last couple of seconds, “what if the timbers material was a prototype representation, but was actually a sound deadening material instead of plywood or similar” Just a thought Very best regards from Belair, in South Australia, thanks for all the work you have done in bringing this content to us all.
@BexhillWest24 күн бұрын
Hmmm, an interesting thought, and one I'd be happy to test-out. I wonder what the ideal material might be? I should think that maybe foamboard might be useful as a proof of concept. I've been experimenting with 'floating' Plug Track, that is to say timbering bases which are not fastened down, but which are securely held between 2 layers of cork. 1 layer beneath the sleepers (as usual), and another with the sleeper outlines cut-out which drops over the top of the sleepers leaving just the very tops exposed. The two layers of cork are glued to each other and the timbering 'brick' is held in between; like ham in a sandwich. Tests so far show a reduction in sound levels but it's still too early to determine whether there is any real mileage in the concept. Thanks for watching, James

Hi James. Thank you for the review. I am interested to see how accurate and reproducible the cuts are on the extended machine. I model garden railway scales so a coach side may be 650mm long. If multiple layers were cut on this machine to laminate a side what would be the variation in length between the laminations?
@BexhillWest24 күн бұрын
Hi, that's a really good question, my guess at this stage would be that the cuts would be very repeatable. They certainly are on all my other laser machines, and fundamentally this one is no different. What I will be especially keen to examine is the stability of the extended frame and its ability to hold-square. I don't have the extension kit yet to be able to comment further. Your question is also of interest as I am currently drawing-up a MR 60' first class dining carriage for Gauge 1 with the intention of cutting the kit of parts on this machine in the Part 2 video. As soon as the extension kit arrives, I'll put it together and run the files. Then we will know for sure. I've also some DIY quality-of-life hacks planned for the machine which I think will help the frame to hold accuracy and resist knocks and bumps. I'll cover those too. All the best for now, get back to me when Part 2 is released if there is anything further you'd like me to explore. All the best, James

Not for the first time I've made an error in the video. Fortunately nothing too major, but significant enough to warrant correction. The issue relates to my use of the 'swap ends' tool at 6:02. Technically, what I show works in the application for which I use it, but it's not the correct way to do things, and may lead to confusion. Fortunately Martin Wynne has spotted it, and provided the correct method on the Templot Club forum. Link and further details in the video description. Sorry everyone, James

Hi James. Great video as always. I'm looking forward to your next video - laser cutting the timbers. Have you considered resin printing the timbers? Robert
@BexhillWestАй бұрын
Hi Robert, thanks for watching. The next video will show laser cut timbering produced on what I think is a very appealing DIY laser kit. As for resin printing the timbers, many have tried (including myself) and failed. They simply curl-up. No amount of strong adhesive or weighing-down seems to work. The FDM printed timbering bases are excellent, as is the laser-cut option. It simply isn't worthwhile resin printing the bases. Whilst it's a bind needing an FDM printer (or laser cutter) in addition to a resin printer, the finished outcomes are far superior and worth the investment in my opinion. All the best, James

Hi Roland, There is progress, yes. It's just been very slow.... For which I apologise - it's been an extraordinarily busy year this year, and for various reasons, I've not had as much time to dedicate to this project as I'd have liked. I know James has also been struggling to find time to work on this one too. How it will be sold (i.e. kit, RTR, something in between, with/without an actual turntable etc. has yet to be planned out - I'd like to think we could cover most requirements. 2025 NY resolution: get this thing available! If nothing else, I'd just love to see other people enjoying it.

@BexhillWest2 ай бұрын
Hi Michael, It sounds to me as though Chitubox is your computers default program for opening .stl files. You can make 3d builder the default for stl's. In windows search for settnigs>apps>default apps and set your preference there. Alternatively, open 3d builder and then import your file from there. Search for the stl in: C:>Templot_dev > stl files RAW. You should be able to open your file that way and mesh-fix as per the video. I hope that's helpful, James

Hi James, Firstly well done yet another great video, your channel is fast becoming a video diary of all your modelling skills. which are very impressive I have to say. I also note you have fully embraced FDM printing with lots of FDM printed boxes in your early benchtop shots. I can only assume your Neptune 4 is far better then your previous FDM printer. re, the change of material for the servo mount system, it looks as though you have retained resin for the eccentric sheave material choice, which if I am not mistaken slides directly into 6700 bearing. is that correct? I also like the repositioning of the micro switch's, I did wonder in the earlier version if the micro switch were a bit exposed in there original position. I could see catching one whist fumbling around underneath the baseboard could have resulted in the micro switch housing breaking off. By moving it you a have solved that even it it was not really an issue. I can also see why moving to FDM could give you some advantages, maybe more likely in 7mm gauge than 4mm! cheers Phil,
