Interesting, I haul DDR into WA state, to be exact the failed EV batteries that are replaced under recall, warranty or just regular failure etc They eventually end up at a re-manufacturer facility in CA and after are shipped back to the dealerships, so it takes a lot of diesel to keep owners moving LOL. Anyway, as per Hazmat manual that do not recognizes new or used Li-on batteries, anything over 500kg in Canada or 1001 lbs in US requires class 9 placards on each side of the trailer. So I think someone seriously dropped a huge ball with this flaming trailer on I-90.

In CA," Marked for Recycle" HAZMAT IS NOT marked or hauled with a HAZMAT endorsement on CDL. It just needs to be marked load for recycle.. All to save money. These trucks go interstate too. I saw crushed lamps on the list. They washed mercure and many other toxins into the ground I refused a contract for safety and ethical reasons.

I would say at some point there will have to be a global standard on how to build Li batts with a built in intervention process to address the current problem. How long were headlights, brake shoes etc manufactured and sold before DOT specs became the legal requirement? This was a really informative vid, thank you!

Regardless of how they're packed , these are lithium batteries on their way to recycling . Probability is that some of them were damaged before loading , hence they were sent for recycling. Factor in the number of cheap substandard batteries being sold and such fires become an inevitability , even with careful loading .

Good job Chris and good job Patrick. With that racecar you left Spokane in I cannot believe it took you so long to arrive home! : ) I would add one comment about this incident. I think you have to consider breaking a load apart and identify damaged batteries and separate those from undamaged batteries during the initial fire response. Leaving damaged batteries with undamaged batteries mixed with fluorescent bulbs that can vaporize mercury with heat seems pretty risky and the continual rekindles here justify separating them. I won't be surprised if it does not rekindle again. Just my .02 and be safe!

You're aware of the federal Parliamentary enquiry into lithium battery safety in Australia. When Senate enquiries are established, they are given "terms of reference", which limit the scope of their investigation. I haven't taken the time to read the TER in this case, but I'm concerned that all the media talk from the government has been focused on scooter charging in the home, and improper disposal of batteries in household waste (causing rubbish truck fires). Nowhere have I seen reference to the safety of DDR drop off sites. FYI, my local supermarkets and library have battery bins at the entrances, with no supervision. They're left inside overnight. Insurance industry will eventually be the true leaders in this case....

It does take an act of Congress. Often it takes many years for agencies like OSHA and EPA to fully review the need for a law to be changed or a new law to be enacted. For every change there are literally thousands of pages of responses from knowledgeable individuals and companies discussing the Pro's and Con's. These laws are requested by Citizens and ultimately enforced by Citizens, not the Government.

Many people are unaware of the issues with Lithium. It is listed with other elements that do not mix with water. These other elements include Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Cesium and Francium. All of these are being considered for new solid-state batteries that power our lives. We need to be especially careful with how we dispose of used batteries, no matter how they are made. In Washington State there is the E-Cycle system where anyone can drop off electronic devices.

I'm a trucker's son. In the green book that many a driver has (or should have, who knows, many drivers nowadays really ought not to be driving, and speak very little if any English) it lists various placards, their meanings, UN destinations, and the meanings thereof. One of the specialty placards is a placard for material that is dangerous when wet. Oh, and I've known that since about 6 years of age. On a side note. I studied at UCLA but waited until junior high to read her medical/biology books. Lol. Oh, and did you know that one of the ingredients for Woka, I mean Coka-Cola is HazMat (Hazardous Material)?

I worked for a boat builder for 10 years, epoxy carbon fiber. I learned about MSDS, now SDS. The 90's were very exciting times for SDS. All of the manufacturers were instructed to conform to a standard report, and this went world wide. My boss was very concerned with safety and gave me lots of room for research. I studied the effects of about 150 chemicals that were in the products we used. It wasn't good. I worked in the Nuclear industry for a decade and worked in the Plastics industry for a decade. I don't like Nuclear, and I really don't like plastic. There is no Geiger Counter for plastic.

It comes down to looking in your house... in the past fifteen years the world has shifted to Li-Ion, when they are new, problems are minor in comparison. As any device ages it becomes more prone to failure. This coupled with not having a robust disposal process is creating issues.

A few years ago my Father was at a construction yard next a factory that produced styrofoam products. He saw an 18 wheeler leaving the factory with a newly loaded box trailer of styrofoam products of some kind and after it turned onto the street the trailer exploded nearly completely blowing the upper box part from the base of the trailer. The cab of the truck was damaged in the explosion and partially pushed the cab off the trucks frame but he did see the driver escape shortly after but left with paramedics to get checked out. They think the explosion was caused by the newly produced styrofoam product not having sat long enough to vent off the gases from production.

I wonder why NMC batteries are still legal when the much safer LFP batteries last longer, are unlikely to go into thermal runaway and much less toxic when something does go wrong?
@mongo64071
@mongo64071 6 күн бұрын
Because LFP batteries have poor performance at low temperature and have lower power density.
@SolAce-nw2hf
@SolAce-nw2hf 6 күн бұрын
@@mongo64071 Lower power density is largely compensated by the ability to charge it to 100% daily without too much wear and up to 6000 cycles before it's significantly degraded. As for temperature, most modern EV's have s heat pump to condition the battery. Heating while charging is also not much of a challenge. But sure, if you are in a very cold place you may want something else. Just add some Sodium-Ion cells for the cold start and even more safety and have the LFP cells do the range thing as soon as the car is warm enough.
@mongo64071
@mongo64071 6 күн бұрын
@@SolAce-nw2hf you can charge nmc to 100% just fine if you need to. Just don’t keep it there for a long time. I’d still rather have the NMC if given a choice between two battery packs of the same size. At least I would know that on a cold day I could fill up 100% and go further.
@SolAce-nw2hf
@SolAce-nw2hf 6 күн бұрын
@@mongo64071 Actually charging it to from 80% to 100% takes a lot of time and therefore planning if you can't just leave it like that for as long as you like. So I would rather just have LFP that goes almost as far at 100%, does not require cobalt mining and will not try to kill me over time as the batteries get old. And being able to park it inside the garage without worries about a blazing inferno while everyone is asleep is also a nice idea. And as for NMC, it really does not benefit from charging in really cold conditions either.

A common mistake is to confuse Watts with Watt-hours. Watts are a measure of instantaneous power. A 100 Watt light bulb, for insance, burns 100 Watts. Watt-hours are a measure of energy, which is power over time. Your electric bill charges for each kWh , which are 1000 Watt-hours. Confusing Watts with Watt-hours is like confusing MPH with miles driven. One is a rate. The other is the rate over time. Or to put it in fireman's terms, gallons per minute is a rate. Total gallons is your rate of usage over time.
