Yeah, I read that comment and thought about it a bit. Even approaching it from a realpolitik angle, the fact remains that the Right creates the problem. If any one person says something usefully inflammatory or poorly phrased, they will amplify it. If the narrative is not shrill enough or outrageous enough, they will inflate it. If the narrative does not exist, they will invent it. Trans people can't prevent this because they're not the ones doing it. The real question is what exactly we're willing to do in response. We have a President that literally, unambiguously told us that he is going to violently purge the nation of political dissent and undesirables if he can.

I mean, if we're in a post-fact world where Republicans can just make up whatever they want, clearly the response is for the Dems to ignore them and focus entirely on crafting a counternarrative and blasting that everywhere they can, not playing defense. I'm plugged into the local Democratic Party apparatus. Got plugged in to volunteer for the election. I'm going to pitch a direction for us at our next meeting: wading into the incoming conflict within the Democratic party to shape its platform and pick new candidates, because there needs to be a reckoning within the party after this, and in order for anything to improve it has to be the "Bernie was right" faction and not the "clearly we weren't Republican enough" faction that wins. We're just one little county, but we did everything we asked of the national party and more, and all these local chapters have every right to demand accountability from the national party.

I do agree that some people think the trans rights movement has gone too far... but they believe a warped non-realitiy. A lot of people strawman leftist trans activists as "wanting to do surgery on your children" when most leftists tend to be fighting against trans-medicalism (not necessarily against surguries or whatnot but against them being a requirement for transition). Even some centrists like JJ seem to have fallen for this weird framing of the discourse.

I have to say about Kamala’s response, it showed how little time she spent being a defense attorney… She could have said, “prisoners get healthcare”- because the question was really a reflection of 2 things, the first that Americans think prison is a torture box for bad people, and secondarily that trans healthcare is cosmetic. She was asked a second time, in a much less confrontational environment and not about prisoners, and dodged again. To me that is inexcusable. She won’t make a case based on rights and freedom… Even though polls show widespread support for trans people. In the end, I think what cost the dems this election is that they DON’T stand for anyone. They rolled back every bit of the pandemic era support with barely a whimper. Yes, I know xyz policy is better in some abstract way that will show up in 5 or 10 year’s time. But you gotta help people in an immediate way too. You got to defend them. You got to make your case, and you got to do it every day, and not back down when challenged.

I think the conversation about "how far" is "too far" might, _hypothetically,_ make some sense to ask in an environment that was overwhelmingly favorable to trans people, where discrimination against them had been all but completely eradicated, and people were still focusing on it as a central issue. but we don't live in that environment? not even close. tossing "unpopular" minority groups under the bus will _never_ be winning tactic for anyone even slightly principled. even if the election results were favorable, such tactics do not produce a ruling clique capable of improving society. Dems just want a scapegoat because they can't bear to face the reality that they run such piss poor campaigns while offering so little voters actually want that they actually managed to lose the popular vote to spray-tanned clown-hitler. They suck, but they will do ANYTHING but own that and try to improve themselves.

if the world "isn't ready" to support transgender people then that's all the more reason why we have to fight like hell to change the world. and not just abandon them in the face of the right wing's fearmongering and demonstrably false talking points. history does not look kindly on those who turn their backs on the social movements of the time for being "too radical" in terms of how to change democratic messaging here, I think the party needs to do more "yes, and" - yes we're going to give transgender inmates free healthcare, and we're going to give everyone else free healthcare too. yes, we're going to fight for the bodily autonomy of transgender people regarding their health decisions, and we're going to fight for women's bodily autonomy through abortion access. expand the scope of the conversation, but not by abandoning trans people. things like medicare for all and abortion rights are overwhelmingly supported by the democratic base, and the public as a whole. the democratic party needs to take a stronger stance here. and call out every time the republicans try to deflect from real issues by focusing on trans fearmongering - transgender people are not the source of anyone's problems

When cost of living, lay offs are happening at rapid rates and cost of food are up "Real Wages" being up doesn't feel very real. The fact liberals clung to the idea of a good economy like this video is also a form of denying reality. The reality for most people is they have less in their pocket. Not to mention during the time liberals pretended to care about Covid there was a mass expansion of the wellfare state which went away with Biden deciding Covid was over therefore making a lot of people's lives actively worse again creating a worse experience the economy. We need to contend with the fact thaylt Liberals also reject reality they simply don't lie as often on issues liberals care about. The genocide they reject reality and repeat debunked lies. Forigen Policy they repeat debunked lies. Immigration they repeat lies. Now with trans rights we're seeing them repeat lies. People will ask every vaguely progressive movement if they're going too far, but will not ask the same when a literal genocide is happening. People will ask how socially progressive policies would be payed for, but will not ask the same of the ever increasing military budget. People will ask if strikes and protests can be done in such a way as to not inconvenience people, but will not ask the companies and governments to act in good faith so such actions are unnecessary. People will call everything that might help people out communism in a derogatory manner, but will balk at the idea that some politicians and their hateful rhetoric might be fascist. None of this is in good faith.

The "gone too far" canard is honestly so indicative that someone does not know either their history or the current circumstances that migrants, the disabled, transgender people and so on are dealing with. To focus on disability specifically, Donald and the boys, as well as a number of democrats, centrists, just white people with money of all stripes and flavours really, have been routinely claiming that de-institutionalization "went too far" and that's the reason there's so much homelessness, firearm-related violence, substance abuse, blah blah blah. "Those people" would've been in an asylum if not for [insert bad people here]. Then they add all these dumb caveats like our new Arkham Asylum will be comfortable, cozy and of benefit to the affected community, but the concept of in-community care programs or of funding support worker-based approaches is "going too far." While questioning where the line is can in healthy circumstances be useful, where power imbalances in society are concerned it almost always seems used as a mechanism to convince the majority to question and undermine the rights and safety of a minority. The Black Panthers "went too far" and that's why there are no Panther-operated soup kitchens or community schools any more, etc.
