@@meltingmug Idealism in the ontological sense, the joke is that you stop believing the material world is a delusion the moment a very material bar hits you in the face lol

@@phoebelahey OH! That’s hilarious. Didn’t get the joke originally because I assumed the idealist and the realist were two separate persons. Thought the implication was that the idealist philosopher wouldn’t react in pain, which… makes no sense at all. Hence why I asked.

I study philosophy and I am preparing for graduate school. Thank you for recording this and sharing it. Publicizing these discussions is very, very valuable for someone in a philosophical desert like me (in Kansas). I think people are hungry for this sort of content, not just me - the video essay is pretty popular these days. I hope the trend continues - and I hope I can contribute in the future.
@cubething-x643 ай бұрын
I also want to say, the fact that you're sharing "alternative" philosophical trends (pragmatism, continental philosophy) in a public light is very valuable considering the anglophone philosophical institutions are so heavily dominated by the analytic tradition. I would not have heard of Badiou without you, and I think he is going to be essential to my philosophical project, and to any real philosophy going forward.

I think cj has been historically correct that there is a push over the past 100 + years tward valuing the objective over the subject. And I think it needs some rebalancing . Like Alexander I think there is a real risk of just swinging one way or the other and the path is to keep both incheck. To use cjs visual device from another essay I think we need a subjectivity AND objectivity emergency escape button. "This no longer functions inside my logical framework I use to predict the future and stay alive" HIT BUTTON "this no longer resonates with me and It brings zero value to my life" HIT BUTTON

the most objective things are truly just things/experiences that more people are agreeing on. they feel transcendent because the pattern that creates the commonality feels like it's a separate entity or force that you could pull off of the humans who are part of it and point to that force and say ah there is the transcendent truth we should ascribe to. I agree with Alexander that this may be a flawed way of thinking because it's effectively just magical thinking wearing the baggage of years of philosophy and religion as a hat. not a bad thing necessarily but any ascribed transcendental truth will always necessarily fail to be true in 100% of all cases
@t.kruste30853 ай бұрын
This made me understand a lit better what they are talking about, thank you :)
@nahometesfay11123 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what counts as transcedent but there are universal truths like conception, birth, aging, physical needs, universal experiences with nature, relationships, death etc. Honestly humans have a lot in common.
@aidanlewis50983 ай бұрын

The things there's no such thing as(plenty of) universal truth , many of them are subjective, maybe in the future people can have babies developing for the whole pregnancy outside of the body with science, and what constitutes physical needs is incredibly subjective, some people think that means nutrition and hydration while others think it also implies sex and /or reproduction. But not all people have sex urges(plenty of ace ppl) and not all ppl desire to reproduce. And on universal expiriences with nature , there should be some common things but a lot of different ones for one raised in a village vs one raised in a city, relationships are too subjective and of personal taste too, some prefer friends over family while others opposite, some prefer casual over long term and vice-versa. Humans have a lot in common(need for food, water, shelter and socializing)but also plenty of difference based on the environment they were raised and live in.
@nahometesfay11122 ай бұрын
@@lmcb8447 Plenty is a relative term, but based on your response, I think you can agree there is at least a dozen. One thing to clarify is I am not talking about theoretical universals that will hold forever just universals that currently hold which can be used to gain insight to humans as they previously and currently exist. I haven't fully decided if I want to ignore infant mortality because there are probably babies who have never felt sunlight or other things that would be universal to anyone who has lived at least into childhood. I'd say being born from your biological mother is universal. Literally everyone has done this to date even though this could change in the future. While "physical needs" is a little vague, I meant things everyone has to do or they will die like breath air nutrition, hydration, temperature regulation. I think you can agree all of those are universal. Nature is probably not truly universal because some people die almost immediately after being born, but excluding such cases, everyone has felt water wind, and sunlight. My point isn't to disregard our differences, but to highlight our most fundamental similarities which everyone and every culture must respond to though not always in the same way.

If you are real which in many ways you can be then your subjectivity and objectivity is real the question is does everyone agree. That’s I think religion was made to create one consciousness in that bushing for a spiritual experience that doesn’t just touch one but a mass and in that group if you’re an artist you’re answering to that.

GAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY if you wanna know fr tho, objective and subjective is likely a muddling false dichotomy as in left/right or liberty/authority which makes attempting to be balanced and good all yin yang style walking the middle path throw you for loops where you end up with your right facing in the direction your left was. also known as matrices of choice or the sea of reeds. all being one makes it totally crystal clear how trickery and deceit is always playing your self that guile is gormless gunk. witches for instance trick but with skillfull means to expose the garbage of societal order.
@Boardwoards3 ай бұрын
also a review is what it sounds like, observing from a sort of face value as the art seems liberated from more deconstructive processing through general consensus and schrödingers author. analysis means to loosen up (deconstruct) where you pry at intersections of meaning to really map the experience not just, well, view it afterwords. so in analysis you are making yourself involved which would be subjective (as the interaction supposedly subjects one to another but it's really just a more linear relation)
