Gender not meaning the same thing as sex and race not meaning the same thing as ethnicity is a difference many people do not cover, and when many people refer to race or gender, they mean ethnicity or sex. And in years past, nobody gave them grief for using these definitions. People act as though the usage of the terms hasn’t greatly changed in recent years among specific groups. And because of this, you have people arguing something to be correct from the old definitions with people arguing something to be correct from the new definitions.

I'm trans. Been a teacher for 6 years. Still teaching. In my time as a public educator, I have seen a handful of people get fired for being actual predators. With one exception, every. single. one. was a white, cis, heterosexual man. It makes me furious that these bozos think we're the problem. It breaks my heart to know that trans teachers are facing unfair scrutiny and abuse in their schools. Fortunately, there are districts that are kind and protective of their trans teachers. If your district isn't one of those, don't give up hope. You can find one that supports you.

We cannot leave. Queer people fleeing is not the same as an ethnic group fleeing - hypothetically, they can all get out. Queer people cannot because we are not limited to our family (biological or not) - we are born spontaneously in every demographic. Even if every queer person could leave their Red states, more would be born before we took two steps toward the boarder. There is no safety in flight - we must stand together.

I’m actually not queer, but I support the basic human need to be accepted for one’s authentic self, and to be safe and protected within one’s society. For that reason, I identify more with the oppressed and marginalized than I look like I should. Really, the conservative agenda of forced conformity and strong hierarchies is not healthy for anyone. I realized when Kamala Harris said “we should follow the law” to a direct question about our existence that we’d been thrown under the bus. And now even that doesn’t matter, we’re left with just the question of how bad it will get and how fast, and there being no end in sight to the right wing push also how long we will have to deal with this.

@ytgytgy I'm in Amsterdam. These things are less segregated here than in most of America. I didn't grow up here, I grew up in a rural area. I've always been naturally non-conforming to typical maledom, to the point that I was bullied for being gay. I do find that all over the place, "male" expectations can be very limiting. This is why I find liberation in queer literature and theory. The notion of gender has such far reaching influence in all of our lives, that it seems to me beneficial to all of us to try and be a little conscious about it. Even if one would want to be an all round typical male, if that's your thing. I don't have any issues with dysmorphia (I am close to people that do, so I have some understanding of how devastating it can be), but I find the expectations put on men (and women) in life and society to be very limiting and crushing sometimes. That's why we all need queer theory. No Trump supporters in my vicinity though. I am in The Netherlands, and we have our own brand of fascists in government right now here. They sing the anti trans song too. It's very dangerous, and very scary. Take care, everybody.

Without knowing how bad certain areas of Iowa are in terms of trans + nonbinary acceptance, I now live in Iowa for at least the next four years as I get a degree at UI. I love the university (for the most part), and I've been fortunate enough to find small pockets of campus that are largely welcoming, but it is somewhat scary at times, how intensely many people here hate us. I sometimes wonder where I'd be if I had actually looked into how things are here, rather than being blinded by "the grass is always greener" (grew up in TN, where trans + enby people are SCARCE). Suffice it to say, would love that survival guide.

Some hope to stoke the fire: while perhaps the most inopportune time to start, I just took my first dose of E after finally securing a perscription, starting a journey I've been slowly but surely been working towards for the last 3ish years after I finally was able to sort out the feelings ive repressed for the last decade. I will not be going back, and I'm doing my best to connect with local communities so that I can help others grapple with the very real gender problems many of them face. Even though it's terrifying and disgusting when I talk with people around me who were duped into following a demagogue or outright deny my existence, there are still enough bright lights for me to have hope. Frankly I don't think that we're farther than we've ever been to moving past gendered struggles and rigid aherence to structural problems with society. We are still of course far, *far* from getting there but as with most social gains we will have to suffer so the ones who follow will prosper. It's not easy and likely never will be, but I think and hope that this is the last gasp of bigoted resistance before change can occur. Unfortunately we'll all likely be dead before we have a chance to see a world unshackled by so called "natural hierarchy", but all we can really do is take one step, plant our feet as hard as we can, and take another. Much love to you all

03:00 to 03:25 and 06:28 - I think the main thing is not to get so caught up on what something MEANS that we don't catch what it's DOING. I think it was in Machiavelli's "The Prince" that I first found it most clearly stated that any grab for power would benefit most from appealing to pre-existing status quos. Where I found that a few years ago was in how some trans people might get really into (too into) the histories of being spiritual authorities according to some pre-colonial customs, whereas other trans people criticize that like "stop saying we were sacred, we were and are normal; 'sacred' only means 'fetishized'!" And I understand the frustration from the perspective of trying to dig into what that means or should mean-and not contextualizing the application of that narrative. When the Lady Gaga song by the title I'm about to mention was released, I was actually against the idea of "Born This Way" because queer people were repeating that to each other as a way to consolidate subculture understanding. I saw that as only effectively applied in argument with the right-wing sound byte that claims queerness "isn't inborn, it's formed via (lightning flash) recruitment (thunderclap, heavy rain, fainting, etc)" and blah is why Heartstopper should be in the restricted section of a library blah blah. To me, at a time like this and back then...awareness of these narratives and ideas are so that they can be wielded, not internalized. Two more memorable tidbits from The Prince that I think might be useful: according to Machiavelli, getting the support of most common people via numbers is easy because the peasant mentality is that we only want to know where the next meal is coming from and to not be abused or oppressed. Machiavelli says it is EASY to give that much to people-it is SO easy. It's the people with aristocratic mentality that needs to be watched out for, because even when they're fed and comfortable and safe, aristocrats will still always want more power or more status and be willing to harm everyone else and themselves to get at it: people with aristocrat-mentality live in constant manufactured conflict. The Aristocrats.

I always have a tremendous amount of respect for your analysis, and I know this video is also very much about the practical question of "what now?" But in your description of fascism as not being able to cope with conflict, I don't know... I have not thought this through, I don't have my own comprehensive analysis of fascism down. But I know, or rather I seem to recollect that the fascism of the early 20th century often explicitly embraced conflict as part of the natural order. Kind of "might makes right" made ethical, but of course only if it was the might of my side. I do agree, though, that fascism always seem to carry this mirage of a perfect conflict-free world with it that it is striving to get 'back' to, somehow. Conflict-free for the chosen people, I think. I read something long ago by Donna Haraway, I think, where she argued against striving for 'healing' and for striving for 'regeneration'. Or something. Maybe it was the Cyborg Manifesto or a related text. But it is close to what you are saying. The perfect, conflict-free, ideal will never be realized. But things can be better or worse, and we can discern the difference, and we can work to make them better.
