Midsommar was one of the only films that really stuck with me after watching it. I watched it 3 times in the cinema, but after the first time I was stuck for at least two hours in such confusion and feelings I didn’t understand. The only other film that has stuck with me like that is The Substance.

honourable mention is Mother, the scene with all those people holding the baby. that was terrifying because I understand the selfishness within religious people. As someone who was raised heavily religious.

I’ve gotta agree with Mark. I’m also an admirer of Kubrick’s work, but, man, I just felt nothing while watching with this.

The reason why they don’t leave after the first “look away moment” is because they’re all liberals and can so more easily be gaslit into believing they’d be seen as offensive if they questioned the crazy cultural practices of another group. That’s how I understood that part. I saw myself falling for the “don’t judge another’s cultural norms” line of thinking if I were in the world of the movie too. I would have died lol

'Creepy' is the wrong word for it, it is one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen... It is even more disturbing when you think that a lot of things like this and worse than this are happening in reality. Some things seem unrealistic about it, in terms of how certain characters react, but the world is a big place with all sorts of people, so perhaps some people would react in woefully inadequate ways when circumstances demand something else.

Kubrick became a dirty old man and made this awful soft core porn film where he accidentally wanked himself to death and couldn't finish it

The Assembly Cut of Alien 3 is a very good film IMO, I know Fincher hates it, but I think it’s the best version we can get cause we’ll never get Finchers version.

I'm certainly not a educated man when it comes to cinema and feel its bad form to disagree with with a seasoned movie reviewer on his own specialist subject but today's the day, I have to say I absolutely in no way think this movie is as mediocre as this review suggests, given the subject matter and tones of the film i think the humour along with the colour pallet and music is done wonderfully, as for the darker elements not being dark enough I'm not sure it could of done more without compromising it's satirical aims, admitadly i cry at movies quite readily so maybe im not the best person to cast an opinion on that but the sad scenes in this movie hit me extremely hard, i found them a testament to the characters that build it up along the way with the humour and whimsy that comes before the films tragic moments ensuring they really deliver, and for me they did, like a punch to the face, I loved this film, and can appreciate people not being interested in it or not liking it due to the subject and tones not being to there tastes, but for a thoroughly respected movie reviewer to really not appreciate the movie for what it is at the bare minimum feels odd, there really isnt that much here to dislike and feel this review is strangely harsh.

I watched this last night, I found it impressive, dark, gritty, shocking, it keeps you wondering the whole film, and doesn`t dissapoint (what the hell were they digging up) This film for a low item budget was amazing, yes it smells like dead mans shoes, high plains drifter, pale rider etc, but excecutes the theme so well. A true rough diamond, when you are relentlessly searching on that vast catalogue on Netflix for something great to watch, this is the film that you should decide on. Neil Maskell and David Hayman are sublime, great casting.

The pace of the first 2/3s are definitely intentional. Watch it closely. The camp/tongue-in-cheek stuff is all there right under your nose. Really fun movie, and yes, the last act is properly bonkers.

Legitimately thinking Eues Wide Shut is actually an erotic thriller with the stuff that happens in the film is bizarre. It's a psychological thriller.

Adam West doesnt get derided because it was a totally different era and it worked as a comedy. Batman and Robin got derided because it came during a time after you had the dark Tim Burton films, and a decent Batman Forever film (not to mention Batman was seen as a dark character by then in the comics too), and they turned the franchise back into a comedy.
