You hiked it backwards. Bold move. That climb from pate valley looks brutal!
@drivehikerepeat4 ай бұрын
Ya know, that climb was brutal but we got to enjoy such a long and leisurely hike down the canyon that we decided it was worth it. Had we gone the ‘right way’ we would have been climbing (admittedly with less steep grade) for 3/4 or more of the trip. In the end, grinding it out the last morning worked for us.

My friends and I just finished this exact hike yesterday. It is definitely going in the back pocket for good. I thought the first descent into Telephone Canyon was rough, but the first 2-3 miles of Strawhouse before finding the wash are a cross-country mess of thorny proportions. I also thought the bouldering was pretty rough. We did go out of the wash at the Ernst Valley to hug the west side and it definitely saved the 1-2 extra miles you guys had, but it was heavily overgrown and miserable 😂 We camped at the exact same site you guys did and felt every emotion you shared on this video! I’m glad I did it. Never again. Edit: by the way, that little cairn you found at the top of the Strawhouse wash is still there 😅
@drivehikerepeat7 ай бұрын
We just can’t even say how much we appreciate you stopping by. It’s so validating! It’s been about a year since our trip and I was just starting to wonder if maybe I had overblown it. But yeah, it was thorny as heck and so bad. We didn’t capture it in the video but one Sotol bush was so thick that when my husband hopped off a boulder, it practically lowered him to the ground as he stepped through it.
@bombas2387 ай бұрын
@@drivehikerepeat you did not overblow it at all. Two years ago we hiked telephone canyon all the way to the east terminus and back out to the way we came. We can’t decide which one was harder! ahhhh Quartz. every year, late May (2005-2015), i would bop over the ridge from Bowman campground to Quartz Lake and follow the trail to the head the of the lake. once i lost visual contact of the lake , i had about 200 yards further to a root/stump and a game trail that lead downhill to the lake shore. i'd wade the shoreline to the inlet creek (1/4 mile) and start fishing. huge cutthroats. bigger bull trout. and massive lake trout (invasive) catching many 5-10 lb trout every trip - - - for years. alone no one ever bushwhacked to that inlet in all my ventures there thanks for the memories. i have no video (you have some) thank you

Is the trail along the Dodson easy to discern and follow for a moderate to experienced hiker?
@drivehikerepeat9 ай бұрын
Yes, it really is! There are plenty of places where the trail goes through washes but there are always cairns to mark. Except for once, we never had to pause movement to tell where to go. Our only tough spot was at the intersection of Dodson and Blue Creek but all we had to do when we got a little off was to backtrack to the last cairn. The biggest challenge on this trek is understanding and preparing for your body's water needs.
