Aretha was some kind of genius. She talked "God Specializes" up to the point that there was NO OTHER SONG it could have been...and she didn't even really give it away but I KNEW that's what was coming just because of how she talked it up. He love to bet on horses, and he wasn't the greatest at it. He wanted Mahalia to sing the blues or jazz, but she refused. Their marriage ended in divorce but they remained great friends. Mahalia's grandfather was a slave, and one day in the heat she sent him to get a picture of himself taken, he suffered a stroke from the heat and almost died. Mahalia prayed and promised God that she would never sing in a theater. She turned down Las Vegas opportunities offering to pay $25,000 for one night. She denied an invitation to sing at the Apollo Theater as well, but her faith was strong, and Mahalia loved money, but she always remembered her sacrifice to God. Sigmund Minters Galloway was a leach, and Mahalia was his meal ticket. Neither of her ex-husbands were left in her will; however, Sigmund's daughter, Sigma Galloway, she left her approximately $10,000 in her will. In my opinion, Mahalia, just as many of our gospel pioneers during her time, truly ministered the gospel of Jesus Christ from a sincere heart. I listen to her practically every day.
