These only make sense if one has the ability to charge at home and if one does very many short journeys. They have all the normal excellent 3 Series traits along with being very good-looking cars. However, I found it to be very compromised with regards to the engine. I had range anxiety and found that if one pressed on, the mpg were nothing to write home about. I think it would probably have been over your budget, but the M340d is head and shoulders above this as an everyday car. Sound, ride and performance are far superior and I got over 50mg on a run to Scotland. The 700nm of torque are quite addictive.

Yes, the new 2025 spec have 19.5 KWh batteries, the cold does affect the range but currently driving in my hilly commute the guess-o-meter is showing 45 miles. Adaptive suspension is a must and I specced normal tyres rather than runflats. My new car G21 Lci2 is frankly everything I could want.

I owned a 2019 G20 for 3 years and averaged over 120mpg, I also had a dual tariff so the full battery cost 70 pence to charge, i too like yourself was in the goldilocks zone on my commute, so during the week I never used petrol, I filled up every 6-8 weeks. I recently changed the car for a brand new G21 so double the EV range, frankly the g20 was the best car I have ever owned, comfortable, quiet, lovely car.

Seems to have basic spec, mine has traction control, tequipment, sub at the front and the extra speakers in the door, which yours doesn't have, rear wiper which is a novelty really, and a sunroof, which I occasionally use. When I bought mine, I had one big issue with the gear cable that was badly worn, Porsche actually changed the design so when I got it changed the ball on the gearbox kept popping out, so had to pop it back in until the specialist I used fabricated metal to keep it all in place. The only other major expense I've had is a misfire on cylinder 5 so just changed all coil packs and spark plugs, which is a real pain to do, but do-able. Otherwise I've just been driving it and doing regular oil changes... it does need some tyres and the handbrake sorting which I won't be tackling. As others have said, they're not too bad to work on yourself. I had a 986 Boxster before this and did a lot of the maintenance myself. The suspension work was very do-able in a day or so, I changed all 4 control arms and the drop links. You can do the brake lines yourself, I used a local garage on my Boxster and used copper brake pipes, Porsche and the specialists use the steel brake pipes, which will corrode again... a little money maker I guess. If the RMS is leaking, I dont think its a massive issue unless its dripping on the floor. It is good to have a decent local garage you can use or reliable specialists for the major jobs though. And youtube tutorials are your best friend!

Really fun video - thanks for sharing. I bought my 1999 996 for exactly the same reason. Too cheap to pass on. One thing I believe I have right is that this particular early version of the 996 has never been a risk when it comes to the IMS. People conflate the problem with all versions when in fact it is really something that emerged in the later 2000s models. The engine power combined with lightness of the car make it extremely nimble and quick. Hard to imagine more driving enjoyment & fun as such a low price - in my case <8k pounds.
@WiseTorque
@WiseTorque Ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! I agree, quite a lot of scaremongering around the 996. Which is probably a big factor as to why their prices stay quite low. The IMS is probably the only good thing that has been done on my 996 by previous owners, at least it gives me a bit of piece of mind.

981 GTS with the 3.4L NA engine is an absolute cracker, great car - does everything well, much, much nicer car than the 981 S or 991.1 base Carrera and Carrera S. Good choice with the 997.2 GTS but the better choice is the 991.1 GTS, much better front end. Wouldn't go near the 991.1 GT3 the finger follower issue will continue to bite, keep in mind Porsche completely ditched that engine in preference for the race developed 4L as found in 991.2 GTX onwards. You'll find the 911 "snobs" don't really understand the Porsche line up that well or are just insecure. I own some great sheet metal inc. 991.2 GT3 RS, 720S, and 296GTB, I also own a 981 GTS and really enjoy it.

Why would you recommend a 320i over the 330e when you arent able to right it of as a company car, you get the same vehicle for basically the same price on the used market rn. Yes the 330e will need a battery replacement down the road but are those 1 thousand euros really gonna matter when you safe so much on petrol till then and not to mention youre getting almost double the horse power in xtraboost if you want to. Im still kind of naive when it comes to cars i just recently started looking into them after i saved up alot of money im still driving my fiat punto cause of italian limitations to driving beginners. I really wanna get a bmw 3 series has always been my dream
@WiseTorque
@WiseTorque 2 ай бұрын
On the used car market I would opt for the 330e over the petrol or diesel variants. Here in the UK especially they're the cheapest option for the G20 3 Series, despite being more expensive when new. Personally I wouldn't worry about the battery cells too much. There are plenty of examples currently where these have done 120,000 miles + on the same battery. It is also very unusual for the full battery to fail it will usually be one of the cells on its own. Good luck with the saving and I hope you get one soon!

I bought mine when it was five years old with 9,000 miles. I used it as my daily driver regardless of the weather and it now has 217,000 miles. It has been amazingly reliable and it's only left me stranded twice once when the fuel pump gave out and once when a recently replaced battery developed a fault. The only major replacements it is needed were a air conditioning compressor valve cover gaskets twice and a leaky master cylinder. Always maintained on time using OEM or better parts first at the dealership and then by a knowledgeable Porsche specialist. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere.

@wisetorque you better read up on how to clean the drainage points in the sunroof and the frunk. If they are clogged, water will get in the cabin. It's an easy job. Take the front bumper cover off and clean the rads. That car looks like it's been rode hard and put away wet. Is it worth restoring? I wouldn't. Unless you have a lot of disposable income. 1) You also appear to have a failing first stage fan temp switch, judging by the high operating temperature shown. 2) A priority should be to fix the emissions control solenoid. If the car runs rich, it will dilute the oil with fuel, which will lead to bore scoring.
