Nice ! From 10:38, I'd suggest select all, path > stroke to path then path > union then path> break apart then path > union again. Quick, but if you set a 4 px stroke width, it will bigger of 2px than original. Not a problem if it is intended to have just a fill, no stroke color.

Very interesting, thanks. I love the way you analyse your needs to guess the way you'll use inkscape to achieve your art. I'd use shapebuilder tool to draw hearts, from 14:25 : no need to use complicated method from there. I'd also use snapping to rotation centers : it may help aligning shapes with oblique guides.

Great tutorial! I assume you made clones of each animal. But I don’t get how to make them align in a circle inside their shapes. Is it a path effect or can I manage that in the align and distribute section?
@InkscapeArtWithTomАй бұрын
Thanks again Erika! Good question. I glossed over that in this video, but I fully explain it in my "How To Draw Mandalas" video. You can go there and in the comments you can jump to the chapter called "Path - Path Effects - Rotate Copies" to see how this is done.

Thanks for the video. Very good explanation. As you say, it has been around for quite some time. This method is used for other things, like templates ,icons, etc. Particularly I create my own libraries of symbols, is the same method, only changes the file type when saving and of course, the location of the folder.

The way I go about it is take the mandala shape and duplicate it. Move the copy out of the way. Take the original and turn the stroke down to something small like 1 px if you have a 2 px stroke for the other one. Turn all those strokes to a path and union them all. Then draw a shape larger than the mandala and send it behind it. Difference the two so now the stroke is removed from the same. Then split that apart. All the individual pieces are now their own object that you can select and change the colors, add individual gradients, etc. Once you are done, group them all together and move the other thick stroke outline over it.
@InkscapeArtWithTom2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing another useful technique! When I applied this I found that many of the broken apart pieces overlapped the others, so I had some work to move pieces up and down levels to arrange them properly. Maybe there's a way to avoid that... Also as I reviewed this video, another time saving idea I have is to just color a single piece of repeated pieces with the Paint Bucket and then use the Rotate Copies Path Effect to repeat the new colored shape around for the others.

Enjoyed your tutorial, thank you. If each fish have a black outline/border of 4px but when you stack the rows the border between the rows must become 8px, but i dont see that happening, is it some Inkscape intelligent feature?
@InkscapeArtWithTom2 ай бұрын
Great question Faiz, thanks for asking! Yes, I did overlap the stroke borders when snapping all the fish together. Snapping allows me to do that. The stroke is added to the shape, so we can also eliminate the stroke and snap the shapes perfectly together. But, I think having a stroke looks much better. This is similar to how tessellations are made physically. People will transform a cardboard or construction paper geometric shape and then use that as a stencil to trace the outlines onto another sheet of paper. They draw just the parts of the outlines that do not intersect with another outline that was already drawn. Cheers!

OK sure Elena. If you want to save the Inkscape project itself, just go to File > Save As. If you want to see how to export your artwork as a PNG or PDF file, check out the video link at the end of this comment. @@InkscapeArtWithTom Thanks a lot! But for some reason, when I save it, and try to upload it on canva it says that the file is to big(I save as a plain SGV, also tried inkscape sgv), that was the reason why I asked how you save it.
@InkscapeArtWithTom2 ай бұрын
Sure Elena. I think you may be saving the entire Inkscape project and maybe that's why Canva says it is too large. I recommend placing your final repeating pattern image onto the Inkscape Page (and adjust the Page dimensions if required). Then export just the Page as an SVG file. Or place the final pattern image off the Page. keep it selected, and export just the Selection as an SVG file. If that is still too large, then try saving the final pattern image selection as a PNG file instead, which should be smaller, but will lose the SVG scaling benefits. I hope that helps!

When I clip. It will remove the image on the other side but on the selection box it still appears to be a complete group of images. Where am I making a mistake?
@InkscapeArtWithTom4 ай бұрын
Hmmm, you're probably not making a mistake. Are you moving the clipped image off to the side? In this process we duplicate the original image first and I wonder if the selection box is of the duplicated larger image? Also, clips can be released using Object > Clip > Release Clip, but I don't think that is really the issue. If you would like to send me an email with screenshots it may help me see what is happening ([email protected]). Take care!
