Hope you enjoy a fun and restful Christmas and New Year break, and just throw up a video whenever you feel like it! I will be taking my foot of the pedal at the plot over these next couple of months of extreme cold, as will most UK gardeners I imagine. I've got some big plans for my plot next year though, and I'm looking forward to watching how you get on with your big plans too!

Hope your feeling better soon, you need a rest and time with your family. Looking forward to any videos you make but don’t do too much. Like you I have taken on a second allotment recently and have lots of ideas but after recent emergency surgery and the terrible UK weather things will take time. Gardening is not a race it’s a wonderful journey 😁🌺🌸

Jim, I love your videos and your natural style - talking to us as if we're just next to you having a natter. So excited to see what you do with your plots but in the meantime it makes sense to slow things down and spend more time with your family during the dark winter days. Don't forget to video your construction projects as they're useful. Please don't edit as I for one prefer to see your true self. Take care of yourself Jim and hope you get rid of that cold soon

Cant wait to see you sort the strawberries out as i have just bought s fruit cage and want to have it just for my strawberries , and want to absolutely fill it as much as possible so any good ideas, maybe vertical gsrdening ideas, but any tips to get as many strawberry plants in as possible would be great !
@downtoearthwithjim
@downtoearthwithjim 2 күн бұрын
I'm planting mine in 30 litre buckets. I'll probably plant 3 strawberry plants in each. The cage I have built is 10 x 10 ft in size. I can fit 24 buckets in and have enough room to walk around. So that's 72 strawberry plants right there! If we assume each plant produces 500g of strawberries in a good season, which I think is fair. That would mean up to 36kg of strawberries going off that estimate!

If you're thinking of going for an allotment, I'd say go for it! Don't be put off by the work involved. You can do as much as you'd like on an allotment. You can plant a little bit in buckets, or more if you feel up to it. Completely up to you. I always do too much then I go away on holiday and things go a bit wild 😂

Thank you! Some great harvests to come from them hopefully! Yes quite right, and I'm being very careful with it. I'm just using some of it to fill the bottom of some of the beds. It's the dark, well rotted stuff that's been on the site for well over a year. The pile which had the suspected herbicide was a different pile at the other end of the site which was off a different supplier and full of shavings. This stuff is different. Although I'm not spreading it like I have in previous years. Simply just a bulk material to help fill some of the beds

Can you sow supermarket garlic cloves, or is it best to get from a nursury? I read in a book you can just break apart a supermarket garlic bulb and pop them in the ground, but that book was from the 1970s and I wondered if modern commercial varieties are cultivated to not do this.
@downtoearthwithjim
@downtoearthwithjim 2 күн бұрын
I've never had any issues growing supermarket garlic. The only caveats are: it may be sprayed with a growth inhibitor, and you don't know the variety. Also the garlic may have been grown in a different climate, so may not grow as well in your climate. But as I say, I've always managed to grow it okay from shop bought and I've heard many others have had success, too. I'd give it a go, they're pretty cheap! Nothing to lose 😊 perhaps it's a good idea to try both. Get some from the garden centre, and plant some shop bought. Compare the results 😊 good luck!

Curious about the micro greens. November seems an odd month under grow lights as I grow them with trays on top to aid germination for at least 4/5 days then the last 2 days in the light to make them go green. I grow them in coco coir,misting them from the top & then bottom feeding to prevent them dampening off. Be interesting to see what you do.
@downtoearthwithjim
@downtoearthwithjim 2 күн бұрын
I also grow micro greens in coir, as they don't require any nutrients (it's all in the seed) as they are of course only being grown for a couple of weeks. My grow lights also aren't full spectrum. Simply just led 'shop' lights. But I don't grow anything up to fruiting stage. Usually it's just starts for the allotment early on before it warms up enough to take them to the plot

Physalis do seem to ripen up when left on a window for a couple of days, I found the same as your experience with there being lots of lanterns but the majority still green even when they'd fallen off naturally. That being said even when they do 'ripen' by the window they are not particularly vibrant orange, more of an off orange colour and will split when ready. As for sweet potatoes I have also had brilliant success with two Japanese varieties call Murasaki and Sakura which both prefer a cooler climate (South England). Started the slips in February and planted out in may I think it was. I had also (probably quite importantly) grew them up a structure using string to twist around the vines like you would a tomato in a polytunnel which was a lot of work but seems to have paid off and would recommend giving them a try.

Well that's pretty much the end of harvests for this year - certainly will be when the frost comes next week, as I'm still harvesting a few tomatoes, peppers & aubergines. Last beans are drying on their vines in the polytunnel & winter salads are producing. Outside, I'm down to beetroot, leeks, brussels sprouts & a couple of late cabbage. Oh well, at least I've had time to build my new woodworking bench & a make four panel, glazed screen to divide the kitchen from the living room over the breakfast bar/counter top. Worked out I made 3.5m³ of 'finished' compost this year, which is a little over the minimum I need for 75m² of beds, including greenhouse & polytunnel, plus the 450 litres I need for my 50/50 mix in my potato tubs. I'm about ready to enter hibernation...

I always say you can't ever have too much compost! That is very good you still have plants producing. Winter veg is so underrated in my opinion. Thanks for your comment and happy growing next year to you! 💚

@@downtoearthwithjim My sprouts are also disappointing - many not much bigger than marbles. No idea why - perhaps 2 weeks too long in pots, as they went in after garlic. Might interplant between garlic rows next year.
