Larry, thanks for your great content. I like your point about not over correcting and looking for the source of the reactivity and the limitations to corrections without solving the source of the reactivity. I heard you emphasize basic training, building relationship etc. However, I didn't hear you tell us how to stop reactivity, instead how NOT to stop reactivity. Help me understand, thanks.

As a trainer, I run into this often and what is most frustrating is that owners actually DON'T want to put in the work. Everyone wants the Benji or Lassie in the movies and can't accept the realities of dog ownership. You're right--the ones who are willing to put in the dedicated effort are terrific, but so many of the people I encounter have kids and/or too many other distractions to be able to focus fully on the dogs. Sadly, these are the same families whose children get bit when all hell breaks loose. Another struggle is when the adults are not on the same page. I always ensure that BOTH adults in the family can see eye to eye and work TOGETHER on correcting the situation. What I find fascinating is the personal psychology of the people I work with. Very few want to be what they perceive as the bad guy. "But I want Fido to LIKE me!" Teaching respect through discipline and by "being the captain" is what keeps dogs OUT of shelters, folks.

Dude, help me see what im missing.. i correct my 4month old shepweiler. I used the touch correction and a firm no. I put my hands like a claw and when he bites, i siftly touch him and say no. However this doesnt make him stop, it makes him come at me harder. He is beginning to snarl, and no matter how many times i correct his biting, he comes at me harder. I have bites all over my arm. I love him, and i know i am the problem. Please help me figure out what i am doing wrong..

Do you want him to bark at you or at the object? When you laid the object down, he was a little confused. Focus switch is something I am also working on and it’s kinda difficult.

My first dog at age 13 was a 15 pounder at her heaviest. Her name was Buttons. I learned to raise and train her just like I would a big dog. I've only had GSD or mixes of since and I train them just like I did Buttons. A dog is a dog regardless of size. I treat them all the same.

It’s good to hear I did it right with my girl. She’s comfortable with the crate when it’s needed from the early puppy training, our walks include training and games, I made sure desensitize her checking her ears, nails, teeth, etc. exposed her to everything. My 4 year old can walk her. She’s amazing and everyday is a new opportunity to learn and have fun!

This video was so helpful! I’ve never used an e collar because I don’t want to use it wrong or have a dog that only listen when I bust it out (which is how I see e collar use all the time) I’m excited to introduce it to my 9 month old pup Loretta. We have some things it will def help her with. Like jumping up on all our friends and family and bark / whining when tied up while we are camping even though we are like only 10 feet away. She is a good dog I think this will help us fine tune her obedience ❤

Great video; we have a 6 3/4 yr old German Shepherd. I watched this video, among others, years ago before getting him and decided against neutering. It was the best decision we could have made. Our vet and their techs are very much in favor of holding off until the dog is fully developed, at the very least, and holding off entirely if possible. Unfortunately, last week, he had to be neutered due to some prostate issues. Nothing life-threatening at this time, but one that was resolvable from neutering; we discussed this with many vets and techs as well as his breeder and trainer, who were both very much in favor of leaving him intact his whole life; they all agreed because of his chronic prostate condition, while it was at this stage, neutering was the best way to resolve permanently. It has been going on for the last couple of years but got progressively worse. We tried many other things previously to resolve this. Still, we had no luck, and it was down to a lifetime of prostate issues or antiinflammatories and antibiotics, which we were told could have a worse effect on long-term health than neutering at this point. Thank you again for the video; it was one of the reasons we didn't do it when he was a pup. Incidentally, we lost our last shepherd at 9 1/2 years old from terrible cancer. It was one of the worst experiences of our lives. He was neutered at 6 months, at the recommendation of his vet and trainer. The same vet today does not recommend neutering puppies anymore.

Beckman dog training encouraged me to Porn Train my dog for couple of months and use a gentle leader. My dog was manageable (not respectful) but was a unhappy dog. I don’t blame Joel beckman for this but the fact is, I was encouraged by his videos. Luckily a local trainer convinced me to get rid of the gentle leader and finding this channel showed me that you could be your dogs best pal and get respected that way.

No no no. Since my first very own gun dog in '83 we have never ever ever train or even allow 'drop it' at my house. It is always always 'give here'. Preferably at a heal position. I don't allow them to shake the water off first either. Nothing short of in my hand is acceptable. Even my Son knew that. Now many dogs and breeds post our hunting dogs, we still don't allow 'drop it'. Must be in my hand. I don't care what it is or if the dog is a retriever or not. Mostly not these days for us. 'give here'' in my hand always and forever. This is the way. The only way.

That’s a ridiculous and outdated way of thinking. And no reason to treat all dogs like a bird dog. Lots of limitations with that way of thinking. If I want the object brought to me then I can ask fir that, no hesitations.

Changing the trigger - Yes! Engage disengage game. Even Susan Garrett has a video of getting people to throw a bunch of treats in the x-pen of barking Australian cattle dogs (who wouldn't fight with each other around food). People were saying to the owner, why are you letting her reward that bad behavior? But by the end of the conference, not one bark - changing the trigger. TY for this video.

I have 3 dogs (2 German Shepherds from the same litter and 1 Aussie mutt) and the younger, bigger GSD frequently attacks the older, smaller mutt randomly and seemingly without cause. It always occurs when they are outside together (they never fight in the house), and I am always supervising. I'm convinced that my supervision has saved my mutt's life every time since I have been able to break up the fights. But, I'm at a loss on what to do. It's been happening off-and-on for 5 years. I try to keep them apart as much as possible but sometimes I have no choice but to allow them in the same space for a short amount of time outside.

We have a similar situation . . . 2 sister GS & 1 obviously wanted to be a mama, mated her with sons GS & had 4 pups . . . all with prearranged homes by Christmas 2022 (all backed out - unsure of finances) . . . son took his pick of litter & we can't help him with any problems between father & son, cause we have 2 brothers & sister with mom & aunt!!! I first watched this video year ago when I realized we were gonna have all 5 permanently - fixed the aunt, then mama, & finally sister, leaving both males intact - got enough to deal with without worrying about more puppies & to close of breeding! So . . . I am rewatching this to try to catch behavioral problems to nip jealousy & possessive situation in the bud before serious aggression becomes part of the problem. I will say, he is describing exactly what Caesar describes & displays in videos - do not add to the aggression with pain, punishment techniques - if the owner is stressed out, the dogs will be too, be calm & in control. [Caesar has an excellent video: woman in physical abuse situation, nasty separation, emotional - adult daughter suicidal & death of mother - multiple dogs has been experiencing all this trauma with her!!! Each became protective, defensive, possessive & she had to keep all 3 dogs separate at all times, she was a basket case - Caesar had to help her deal with her emotions, before he could help her with her emotionally supportive dogs - 2 part episode, I'm anxiously awaiting the 2nd one!!!]

Not sure if this is good or bad but I rough house with my dog (85 lbs bernedoodle) with bare hands and I feel I am able to communicate and teach him so much about boundaries and limits, strengthen my relationship with him actually more then when I play tug with him. He craves for that play and I can take him from 0 to 60 and turn it off as I like. Again, not sure if I am doing anything wrong.
