What?? You can just push the air hose to the fitting! All this time I first put the fittings on the air hose and then slowly screw the fitting with the air hose to the compressor or to the air struts/bags. Is this "push" same for all mercedes models with air suspension to fit the air hose?

Well the only thing missing from the PDF instructions is what cylinder is the engine time on? It does not say when these marks lined up on the cams, with the crankshaft held in that position if it is done on cylinder number one. They did not even put a mark on the crank pulley for confirmation like others do. A tool beside the locking tool is needed to actually turn the crank easily because there is no bolt to fit a socket onto. Everything is about the special tool. So if you are not careful you can be 180 degree out and the crank can line up because the tool fits! So is it time this way...on the number one cylinder on the compression stroke, top dead center that all marks line up, and the crank tool is locked into place and the cam tool is locked into place or no?

All the timing rolls are goin to be installed only in one direction. You always start by locking the crankshaft and then locking the cams and gears on top.

So when timed, is the motor at TDC on any cylinder at all? A reference mark on the crank pulley would help to confirm alot like normal engines because the crank tool can be installed 180 degrees apart and still appear correct...two revolutions of the crank is one revolution of the cam. If it was said the tools line up properly on TDC on the number one cylinder and marks were on the crank pulley it make a difference.

The adjuster don’t have timing and they don’t need to be locked. Once you install thd chain tensioner and lock the cams you can tighten the center bolt

Make sure to check you piston and valves to make sure they are not burned or broke. Perform leak down test to check for internal pressure lost. And compression test

Hello when you replaced the cam do you have to replace the valve lifter and roller rocker arms? I am trying to install a used cam from another m278 due to my reluctor wheel being not aligned with the camshaft anymore. Could I get away just using another used camshaft or do I have to install new set of valve lifters and roller rockers? Not sure if required on this engine does not specify in wis. Thanks

Found on mbworld forms by IdontownaMB much love "Im here to help anyone searching for the answer. It can be fixed easily. You need a largish pair of snap ring pliers. and a flathead screwdriver. Looking at the exhaust cam adjuster you see the part where you forgot to put a dowel pin. There is a half inch wide metal ring that presses against that part. This outer ring is the spring that holds tension on the outer row of teeth. Using the snap ring pliers you put one end in the dowel whole and the other in the little cutout on the spring ring. Then open it up. Slide a screw driver into the gap to hold **** in place. Then insert your dowel. The tricky part is figuring out which direction to move the little gear row. The purpose of the spring loaded outer ring is to prevent noise between the gears on cold start. So its going to want to push against the intake cam's direction of rotation. For the left bank, have the dowel hole at 12 o'clock, using the pliers loosen the left side and insert the flat head at 9 o'clock, then lock your gears in place with the dowel. For the right bnk do the opposite so the screwdriver is at 3 o'clock. Nothing cant be repaired."

I cant imagine the cost of this situation. hopefully it doesn't have high mileage because these also wear out the cylinder linings. I have found big gouges in these enignes usually on 6-8 which causes a loss in compression. Would suck to do all this work then the short block fails eventually. The theory is that a lot of the wear on these comes from the variable oil pump pressure control. they run extremely low pressure at cruising speeds and at idle. I have eliminated that issue on my personal vehicle by running an external valve plugged in to the harness to keep the check engine light off. when the valve is unplugged you get normal oil pressure at idle and cruising speeds in default position, which should help with timing component wear and cylinder wear.

I HAVE ALSO DONE THE SAME THING. TAG WELD JUST SO IT DOESN'T MOVE. ONE TIME, I INSTALLED A BRAND NEW CAM & THE PALTE TURNED AFTER THE FIRST START. I HAD TO REOPEN EVERYTHING TO READJUST THE PLATE MANUALLY AND TAG WELD IT. LIKE A DOT, YOU DON'T HAVE TO WELD THE COMPLETE PLATE.

Yes. Because if the cams off timing, the valves won’t close on time so you get single or random multiple misfire faults.

I have a quick question and hope you can help me. on the same engine I had P0017-85 and P0018-85, timing ist done on the vehicle and all magnets, sensors and adjuster are replaced, but unfortunately still getting the same codes. The only symptoms on the vehicle is long at the start otherwise the engine runs fine. Do u think the timing was incorrect or could be related to another problem ?
