I found the Behr semi-transparent weather proofing wood stain & sealer at home depot. It says on the bottle it is 100% Acrylic, which is not stain but similar to latex paint if I am not wrong. I am wondering how the deck looks now although it is still less than their 6-year guarantee. I saw online people recommend to use oil-based stain for deck, which is much easier to restain. Is that the same case using Acrylic?

Just Moved into our home two weeks ago and previous owner painted my entire deck dark red! Ugh 😣 and of course it’s peeling! The railings still look fabulous, but the entire deck and stairs all need to be redone! so I figured I better start researching I’m glad I found your channel because now I know exactly what I need to do! Thank god it’s not too large so something me and my son can do ourselves 🎉 thank you!

Yeah, but what if the little red mechanism isn't working right? I've been messing for three days trying to get that thing to work right and I cannot get this on here because that band for whatever reason will not expand.

Do you need to use the Special stripper wash or mineral wash after using the stripper?

I’m so glad I came across this channel. Thank you . I will never paint my deck again . Every year I’m painting my deck never again, it always ends up peeling.

What did you do to your railings? Keep them painted? I’m assuming they had paint on them. Our deck railings are chipping, thick white paint, really not sure what to do about it.

I left them painted, my ultimate plan was to replace the railing with tight knot cedar posts and new railing, but we sold the farm and left the state before that got done.

I have to remove several layers of white paint from my redwood deck, so I appreciate this video. Hope I can do it my 70 year old self. P.S. love the way you and your son are with one another. If your kids like you, you are a good person.

I am doing this to my deck as well but I am going with composite boards and only restoring the structure and hand rails (I am also replacing the balusters with metal rods) There will be no horizontal surfaced of wood after I am done. Would you say that the prep is still as important on vertical/non-trafficked areas? I have been going back and forth with paint and stain and if I could simply go over the old stuff after cleaning....Thank you!

This is brutal to watch. I restore decks for a living. You did a great job, however some of the steps I cringed at. Eg-2 weeks using 80 grit paper on a palm sander. This could have been done with a polivac on 1000sqf in 45 mins

Another video to demonstrate that I will hire the drum sander! It far exceeds the quality of every other stripping method, and the before/after pics here show that there is a difference in colour but no difference in the quality and apparent age of the surface and the defects are highlighted. The drum only removes a couple of mil of wood at most on a deck in this reasonably good condition and while I don't price my home reno time as highly as my work hourly rate, time is still money, and the $70 hire cost is a pittance.

@the_crushlife

I scraped as much of it out as I could, once everything was stained and finished, it looked so good, the paint in the cracks didn't matter.

Your deck looks great! I used the same stain on our pergola five years ago. I had to go over it again this year because of some mildew I had to power wash off and sun fading but it was easy and looks great.

Yes, if you live in a moist climate you are going to want to re-stain every other year at the very least. Take care of the wood and the wood will take care of you.

We just had a brand new deck built. I had them use the exact stain/sealer product you used from Behr. The wood is Redwood. I wanted to tone down the red in the wood so I used a stain with green in it. Now my deck is green. What advice do you have on removing or changing a stain color?

Lol. I tried a belt sander. That was pointless. My power washer with a flat but didn't do anything. The highest pressure but completely tore into my deck boards and damaged them. Thanks for making this video. I'm gonna try your suggestion. I'm running out of time before this Wisconsin winter hits and I'm starting to panic.

I'm planning on doing this same project next spring/summer with the deck on this home I bought a year ago. Thanks so much for the info, I now have a much better understanding of the process involved, and it is pretty much what my original plan was. Take the long road and enjoy the results for many years to come, that is how I have always approached projects like this. Fast and easy can give you great results, like paint, but usually end up being way more work in the end. Don't *EVER* paint your deck. Great advice.

Just scuff all the flaking paint off with a deck broom. Blow the debris off with a leaf blower. Then apply a solid stain. Easy peasy. Done. No matter how much prep you put in, you're still going to have to do it again a year or two later. No point in wasting your time doing anything more.

Thanks! I bought a house with a 2nd story deck they painted with Cabot deck paint. It didn't last 5 months which I expected :/ now I have ONE question. My little dogs use the yard below the deck. How do I sand and remove material without poisoning my lower yard? Maybe I need to add a patio to the yard (it's just dirt and weeds under the deck) or attach a plastic sheets under my deck like an awning so whatever seeps through at least rolls off the sheets to the outer edge of my yard.. thoughts?
