How far is this from Durango or Bayfield?
@Midwestfishingadventures3 жыл бұрын
When fishing the Animas we were in Durango. When fishing the San Juan, most of the time was on the what I think is called the "Texas" hole. Not from the area. Was out there fishing with a friend.

@@Midwestfishingadventures I fished the Holcomb when I was there recently..Three 8-9” Cutthroat and two Rainbows all released using nymphs.Looking for new waters for the next time I visit this beautiful part of the country.

Those are some solid fish out of the Kish. I'm like a 100 miles away from the river, but try fishing it consistently. While the last couple years had great luck with pike, mainly on the South Branch, then this year was awful. In 60+ hours of fishing got 3, from which only one was above the 24" mark. Any suggestions on spots? Also, great channel, hope you'll post something from this year!
@Midwestfishingadventures5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. Super busy with trying to get some things squared away. Not sure what you are throwing, I throw pretty big flies. The flooding has definitely changed some things around. I didn't see a single pike this spring. Sometimes I think it is about timing more than anything. It's like they are active in windows. Send me a message if you are going to be this way and maybe we can goof off martian style. As far as posting videos, I hope to get back in gear after I get some things squared away. Doing some interesting research and working on getting my credentials all square. May not get anything posted this year.

I hunt and fish in MN lakes and sloughs. Often Whitecaps develop when brisk winds pick up. How does the frontier 12 handle a brisk chop? Will I and my gear get wet?
@Midwestfishingadventures5 жыл бұрын
I am a river rat and I really don't have much experience on big open water so I can't speak to this. If I was to guess based on stability, I would say the Frontier will do just fine. Will water splash into the frontier from a brisk chop? Probably. Here locally our shop will let us rent a kayak for a day. Maybe a shop up there will do the same or at least have a demo day where you can try it on big water. I wish I could be more help but I definitely don't want to steer you wrong.

Is it normal to use a non tapered leader? Would be nice, the store bought tapered ones get really expensive. Thanks Again
@Midwestfishingadventures6 жыл бұрын
brian Solberg it's not really normal. Most people use tapered leaders. But I can buy a whole spool of vanish flourocarbon for the price of 2 or 3 leaders. A straight piece of flourocarbon doesn't roll over as easy but that is okay for smallmouth fishing most of the time. I hope to put out some more detailed videos out this year as I continue to grow as an angler.
@SasquatchTX6 жыл бұрын
brian Solberg Brian, I never use tapered leaders for large fish anymore, especially streamer fishing with short leaders. If I am not running just a straight piece of flouro, I use a two section leader (mostly to keep the relatively thin 15 or 12 lb leader from slicing through the flyline coating) consisting of a 20 or 25lb butt about 12 to 18 inches then the 12 or 15lb main section, line type (sinking/sink tip vs floater) determines overall length. On sinking lines or sink tips I never run more than a 4' leader, floaters I will run no more than a rod length leader. With big bass flies, you get good turn over. Tapered leaders work well to dissipate energy with small flies, besides giving the advantage of stepping down from a flyline that can be an 1/8th of an inch thick to something like 5X smoothly.
@denofearthundertheeverlast51386 жыл бұрын
@ Brian..Try the Orvis Poly leaders, I use the fast sinking 10' salmon and clear floating 7' trout leaders I buy two of each and a spool of either mono or floro in 12-15lbs. The Poly Leaders are made of the same material as the floating and sinking fly lines and act as an extension and attach with the standard loop to loop way, for bass you would add about a 18"- 24" piece of your preferred mono at the end on the poly leader for your tippet, these can last for a few seasons before I have to buy more, I use mine for Largemouth but have caught everything including bream and catfish using baitfish patterns, tip...you can also use a piece of the clear used fly line tips to make your own. Using these poly leaders allow you to only use normal fishing line as the tippet, but still have the tapered part of the fly line acting as the butt section of the fishing line. I use a Perfection Loop for the attachment points on the fly line leader connections, it makes it easy to switch out from floating leader for top water bass poppers to going under with streamers (depending on how deep the water is) you can get away with using the floating poly leader with the streamers for shallow fishing along the bank or when the bass are feeding on minnows just below the surface. it saved me a bunch of money so far.

I fly fish a few times a week here in Ohio, and its always a ton of fun to catch a smalley. I have a 4 & 5wt rod, but looking to go to a 2wt for more feedback. It always feels like you have something huge when fishing with a fly pole. Cant beat it. Nice yak bro!
