Great video brother! You did a great job translating these rudiments to the set in a musical, unforced way. I sure hope that the younger players take note of this.

Hey Noah, this is the first time I’ve watched one of ur vids, dang u r smart, I don’t read music, but, I’ve played for years, please take this as a huge compliment, you have a gift, of really explaining and making what ur saying, to someone who’s never learned to read comp! This was really helpful, I do something sorta kinda similar but after applying what you’re teaching it sounds way better! Thx,

I still consider myself a beginner. I started off burying the beater. Then I tried not to. It's impossible not to bury the beater. You could say I just need to practice it more but I'm being stubborn and I'm not going to lol.
@matticus24yum4 ай бұрын
I've been playing for 14 years and started off not burying the beater with high spring tension but recently started burying the beater after noticing many drummers I like also bury the beater. It helped to make some adjustments to my pedal (looser tension and smaller angle to the batter head) and my playing feels way more grounded than it used to. There are probably lots of great drummers who don't bury the beater and maybe for some styles it's good to be able to do both, but imo it just feels way more solid to bury the beater!
@lobbyrobby4 ай бұрын
@@matticus24yum I messed with my pedal a little bit after I got the feel for it. Then I was afraid to touch it. I had the spring tension fairly tight. Just the other day I started playing around with it again. I loosed up the spring and it feels better to me. I also moved the beater closer to the head. At least now I'm not afraid to change the settings and see what works the best.

@lobbyrobby awsm! At least it didn't take you 14 years to start exploring different pedal settings gahahah! I upgraded to a dw9000 a few years ago and also didn't want to mess with settings, but glad I eventually did, crazy how much of a difference it makes

Playing with dynamics is hard!
@RaduBadita6 ай бұрын
Ok man.. look: this is hugely useful information packed in a direct, no nonsense format and I cannot thank you enough for it! BUT the delivery format, man!.. it makes one’s head spin! You have edited-out ALL the natural breaks in speech (as in a commercial) and this makes it really hard to follow, and for the brain to connect, to the point of becoming a little frustrating. I’m no video editor expert, but from the point of view of information delivery, for it to become knowledge, I can tell you this is not working well - the brain needs space to take-in stuff and also for the images to be fluent without so many “hops” in order to be easily digestible. And it doesn’t improve much when pausing the vid either. It is similar to playing too many notes on the drums with the band - space is equally important. If your concern is ending up with a too long video, then why not consider making a short where you summarize and structure the ideas schematically and link it to the long version which needs to be much more “relaxed”, without unnecessary talking either: consider introducing intentional breaks (maybe having a quiet musical soundtrack in background and raising its loudness during 1s or 2s pauses). Again: having short, natural space added and repeating the main ideas summarized once, can go a loooong way in followers experience.

Noah, it was one of your early videos that made me deep-dive into my grip. Moving the thumb around, trying different levels of pressure, low contact to high contact. And I’ve found amazing sounds by doing this, snare drums and cymbals sound very different, in a very good way.

Regarding the grip: You said to always keep your thumb across from the index finger even when the fulcrum shifts. But then you say you like to use the middle finger fulcrum, and in that case, the thumb is more across from the middle finger. Confusing!
@NoahAlexxander6 ай бұрын
You don't have to have your thumb across from your middle finger for middle fulcrum. A lot of people say you do, and you can, but thats not the approach I use. I keep everything in the same place for every fulcrum. Its a touchy subject for some people, but my video from last week touches on it a bit.

Good stuff. Hear me out on something tho. This is a great video for beginners like myself but you say and show what the beat is. Then 2 minutes later your not playing that simple beat. You're adding a bunch of ghost notes and whatnot. I realize it's not the end of the world but for a true beginners that would be confusing.
@NoahAlexxander6 ай бұрын
Maybe it would be, but hopefully it wouldn't be. The focus is really on two beat fills, and its a concept that should be explored after drummers are comfortable with counting and playing beats in time. I hear you, though!

I’ve been playing for almost 1 year-1/2, and although I’ve gotten fairly proficient in other areas, my fills are my main weakness, since most of my focus has been on groove. This is the perfect lesson for someone like me. Thank you and love your content.
@chrisgoodchild22046 ай бұрын
Aside from Bill Bachman’s technique series, this is the only other video I’ve watched that covers this topic. Really concise, too! I spent a long time trying to “correct” my grip which felt very unnatural. I think there’s a tendency to oversimplify things like this. I understand that it can become a point of too much focus in place of other things that are arguably more valuable, such as phrasing and vocabulary, but in a bid to develop a well rounded technique I believe this is a fundamental problem that should be addressed early on. At the very least, it saves a lot of time and potentially injury from thinking there’s a good and bad way to hold the sticks. I tried sticking to a rigid first finger fulcrum and frequently experienced thumb pain, then tried exclusively middle finger which eased that but then made it harder to play faster, more nuanced patterns. Great video, thanks!

This topic needs to be adressed by us the drummers. Seriously, it's a fundamental subject when trying to play to the drums and almost no one talks deeply about it. All what you hear is wrist technique or finger technique, hand position on the stick and that's it. But it's a shorten version of the complete explanation. Thanks for the video.
