Absolutely epic video thank you very much. The BEST compressor demo I ever saw. This is the gold standard now. I just have one concern about what you mentioned at the end. I studied electronic engineering and have PhD in Theoretical Physics. I must beg to differ on your capacitor comment quite a bit. What you claim in the video is partially correct. You HAVE to go look at life expectancy studies of capacitors. If you do you will change your opinion. Strange things happen and replacing an old working capacitor with a new one is almost never better. It is too much to explain in a post. The amount of damage done by the "recappers" is immense. It breaks my heart. Amp techs and their followers understandably want to make money and the "recap" business is big money for them. So obviously they will push ripping out old capacitors. Also remember that Amp techs are generally not electronic engineers or physicists, so there is very little understanding about life expectancy, dielectrics, dielectric properties and such. Your claim about 20 year life is just absurd to be frank. Please stop spreading such nonsense. It is unscientific-layman amptek money talk justifying gaining more work.
@JMLRecording2 күн бұрын
Hello and thanks for the comment. Electrolytic and paper capacitors manufactured in the past were absolutely made to last no more than 20 years (more around 10-15 actually). I’m surprised to hear that as refutable. Are you referring to Ceramic or Mica caps? Because then I would agree with you, as they were designed to last 50+ years due to being less vunerable to environmental derogation. However, I stand by my comment, as it is very common knowledge that the audio equipment I’m referring to in this video used paper and electrolytic caps, but like any truth seeker, I’m open to correction. Furthermore, leaving out-of-spec capacitors in an amplifier circuit renders the transformer vulnerable to overload, which will invariably destroy it, yet collectors and purists leave them for purported value reasons which is not only dangerous, but flat out stupid to me as an engineer. Regular maintenance dictates the replacing of these capacitors for general safety of the old iron (which is where an amps real value is imo), leaving electronic theoretical physics aside. I’m open to education of course, as I do not hold an EE degree, and most of my knowledge comes from 30 years of studying books such as Harry Mileaf’s iconic “Electronics 1-7” which dictates the replacement of out-of-spec components. Thanks again for the comment though! Looking forward to understanding this better. Have a good one and I appreciate you stopping by the channel. ✌️❤️

Leo was not involved in AIMS. It was a couple of former employees of Fender from Arizona is my understanding. Fender was a $hit show in the 70's and was rapidly declining in quality under CBS ownership and many employees left. Fender was a silent partner of Music Man with 2 former Fender employees which started as Tri-sonix in 1971 which later was renamed Music Man in like 74. Most collectors of Fender refer to the early to mid 70's as the "CBS Era" and did not place as much value on ANY of instruments or amps from that time. That seems to have changed slightly over the years I think only because of the age of the gear and not its quality. I owned that same 4x10 100w Aims combo cabinet that I bought used in 1978. It weighed a freaking ton even though it had casters mounted on the back of it to move it and the chassis was not very robust, the combo took up a ton of room to transport and the tubes and spring reverb were subject to a lot of jostling around. That made it entirely impractical for me to take to gigs or practice. It needed to be parked in a studio which defeats the purpose of the 4x10's and 100w. It was incredibly loud and the most crisp and clear sounding amp I have ever played however ( you could even say "harsh" with too much mid and treble and cranked volume). Even more so than any Fender amp that has been ever produced. I wished they had built it as a separate head and cabinet I probably would have kept it.

You know what? I think you're right. I just asked chat GBT and it gave me your exact response ver batim! I do love 70's Fender amps though. Twins, champs, super verbs... they're all great tube amps. My blonde 62' bassman is my fav tho but my 70's champ is one of my fav recording amps of all time! I used to drag this 4x10 Aims around on tour in my 20's on casters but it got old quick. I got it in a trade mid tour when my amp broke down. Traded a ES135 for it straight up in MI. I was always told Aims was a Leo Fender "pet project" but when I was 13 years old I let my girlfriend give me Korn braids and rocked em for a week in Jnco's so .... Ive been known to make mistakes before ;)

Nothing beats a real plate. Highly recommend trying some different drivers. I started with the same one you did and even the smaller stick-on transducers you can get from Parts Express are WAY better and have less honk in the 600-2K area. Most evident on vocals. Ended up cannibalizing a small 5" speaker and made the only attachment to the plate a pinpoint sized metal rod that protrudes from a plug inside the voicecoil. EQ on the way in helps clean up the Vidsonix a little but it's only a bandaid and getting the driver/pickup combination right will reveal the glorious depth hiding inside the plate. Just listening to your samples, it sounds like your pickups are good and the mechanics aren't bad but I knew immediately which driver you were using when I heard it. The goal is to be able to completely mute dry vocals in the mix, substitute with plate only and it still sounds perfectly good and listenable, if a bit too reverby of course. The best EMT plates had this kind of clarity. Nothing beats a real plate!

My wife and I saw the film in a really good theater in Dobbs Ferry. I am a retired audio engineer and for 29 years, I worked for SSL in New York. I am also a mic collector and total geek so when I saw the film the first thing I said to my wife was how impressed I was by the authenticity of the audio equipment (the CBS console was the kicker as I remember them for CBS 30th Street Studios). Seeing the backstory with you was a real treat - all involved should be immensely proud - Great Film and Superb Sound - Kudos to all involved.

Hello. In Newport 65 and in the photo at minute 2:09 I think it is a Schoeps CMT20 (Or some of its variants), because it has the same connector, the same windshield and the same shock mount. It went into production in 1964, was transistorized and was the first mic to use phantom T-power (maybe convenient for a live show like newport). Great job and I hope to see the movie soon. Greetings from Argentina.
@JMLRecording23 күн бұрын
That’s absolutely right, great eye! It was a Schoeps M221B that had a unobtanium screw-on Omni MK26 capsule underneath (that mic had the earliest use of transistors in an audio device!) so I sub’d a more accessible Neumann km56 since the Schoeps proved unobtanium. I had other reference photos of it with the W20 windscreen ball removed that Dylan used on stage as well as in the studio. We did however procure the Scheops W20 windscreen seen in that reference photo, which was used on other mics throughout the film, as we did the MBHO MBC. The MBHO is an astounding SDC if you can pick one up. Cheers brother ❤

Yea the Demeter is amazing actually. The manual reads like it was written by a friend, very palatable and easy to read. Kinda like the presets on an LCA2B. It’s a killer sleeper for sure.
