i want to thank you and this channel for introducing me to Shunji iwai. I got so interested in his work and watched many of his films in the past six years after watching your video.

The thing about Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz is that the ending turns out good for a large majority of characters seen. The World's End threw a bit of a curveball in with that one and thats why its my least favourite of the cornetto trilogy.

It is a happy ending though because Earth was the only planet who managed to get away from the network's grasp.

Shunji Iwai is every bit as a true genius of film and humanity as Akira Kurasawa. Every work is art.

My favorites are Love Letter and Swallowtail Butterfly. Love Letter has the most beautiful winter cinematography I have ever seen and the ending of the film is maybe the sweetest scene of all time hahaha. While Swallowtail is probably Iwai's most unique and ambitious work, a legitimate epic- Shunji Iwai style. That said, I did not like All about Lily Chou Chou. It's his most self indulgent work, his usual filmmaking quirks are all cranked up to 10 and it is simply too much. Only the most hardcore Iwai or arthouse fans will enjoy it, it's undecipherable to the general audience. I imagine the film would be maddening to the average filmgoer, as even I could barely sit through it. That said, no one can deny the man is a true auteur.

@swagikuro My favorite Iwai film is probably A Bride for Rip Van Winkle. But Love Letter is a close second with Lily Chou Chou. I love Lily Chou Chou for the reasons you described lol. The sprawling experimental nature of the film really captured me. I really love most of his films though including Swallowtail. Even the tv movie ones like Ghost Soup and April Story.

There's a Hell of Allot more references that are happening that I Always recommend that People watch this Classic more than Once. If only to see people get that this and the ending was all spelled out from the beginning of the movie. XD

"death of art and beauty in Go" - what a load of horseshit. Any game that will ever be invented can be "solved" using math and calculation, the reason why the games are fun is because we, as humans, aren't capable of these calculations. It's not like chess is an easy game to solve. While far less, there are still trillions of trillions of trillions of possible positions in chess. Today, a chess computer on a moderately competent device can defeat the combined efforts of all of humanity working together 150 times over, does that make the game of chess less beautiful? Does this mean that the creativity and beauty of chess games are less meaningful? No, humans still play chess, in fact more than ever before, and the future of chess is looking brighter than ever. Everyone knew a long time ago that Go can be solved, thus is the nature of games, but just because we're getting closer to that point doesn't make the game any less beautiful.

Wondrous! KCR described it as ‘The Real Deal’! Featuring the flower-like Ziya, & the Sexiest Man Alive as partners, friends - deeply in love, but never lovers: A bitter-sweet love story, as well as a history lesson on China, & the rôle played by Hong Kong: & of course, the Martial Arts scenes are beyond compare! 🙏🏻💔🙏🏽
