I’m so glad I bought a big book of Ilya Repin fifteen years ago now out of print, available used for $398.- Yikes! (and I usually buy used art books cause they’re cheaper). Only recently I found out he was born in Ukraine. Reading back, he spent much time in Ukraine, even writing to Tolstoy how much he preferred the independent spirit of the Ukrainian people. Eventually Repin moved to what is now Finland and refused to have serfs, saying it was unethical. He even became a vegan for a long time until his wife died (he wasn’t much of a chef). He was like the Dickens of russia. One can see the whole history of russia in the faces that Repin painted. Magnificent.
