The only RF lens that I purchased was the 600mm f4 because that is my daily driver so to speak. I have used my 500mm f4 on my R5 with the basic converter and it works like a charm. Same with my 16 to 35 mm lens. So I will keep my EF lenses until they fail. The only RF lens I might consider is if Canon comes out with a 300 2.8 to 500 f4 zoom and then I might trade my 300 f2.8 ef and 500 f4 ef in and go for that level of zoom.

I think you should have started with the Exposure slider to recover the ETTR image, instead of the highlight slider. When shooting ETTR all tones are pushed to the right. By using the Exposure slider you recover the darks a the same time and restore contrast in the image. By using the highlight slider you made the image flat. But I am no expert so...

I'm still using the focus and recompose method with my ancient 5D. Haven't tried any of the Canon mirrorless AF yet. Upgrading to the R5 Mark II must be a mindblowing event if I ever bite the bullet.

Can't really afford the AD200 at this time (I'm not doing this as a job, more of a hobby), I was thinking of going with the TT 685 II S but from what you've described in this video, it probably would be too weak for outdoors usage with a silver umbrella? I'd like to get those contrasty 3 dimensional quality photos seen in your videos without breaking the bank if possible.

I guess for wider shots, I should go with the composite trick. Setup a tripod, shoot the model with the Speedlight and umbrella/softbox close up, than quickly have the model and umbrella removed from the frame, and take another shot without refocusing the camera. Than in post edits, combine the 2 images together, removing the umbrella and light stand in this process? I wonder if this route would work 🤔 More hassle but I save splashing $250++ for a more powerful AD200.

I think most professional photographers stick to what they like and know, and don't upgrade their gear all that often. They will usually just buy lenses to expand their range, and that's a smart thing to do. I got the R when it first released, and I primarily shoot architecture, landscapes and portraits, so it is more than enough for me. I've been using it for years and I know it inside and out, I'm quick with it, it's like a glove, and it does what I need. People pay way too much money for options that they don't really need or will never use, it's silly.

I just received a copy of this lens. I was a bit on the fence, but this video helped a lot in deciding to buy the lens. I agree with this review. Yeah, Canon could have included a lens hood and protective sleeve. At least the Vello hood seems to work well. Your portraits that you showed in the video looked great by the way. This lens earns its' keep. As for the issue of video, I will probably upset someone about this observation, but if I am truly worried about getting some really good video, I am not so sure I am going to rely on a hybrid camera when I need some speedy video. The latest video capabilities of the iPhone 15 and 16s are pretty amazing. If I really want video, my inclination is to go for a dedicated video rig, perhaps Sony FX6 (4K), or Canon R5C (8K). I have both an R6M2 and an R5M2, and I do not rely on either for video. For speed, it is hard to beat the iPhone with the Final Cut Camera application, and you can even shoot in Apple Log. The other advantage is that depending on the venue, you may have others who took some video footage with their iPhone, and if they ask you to edit in some of their footage, it is not that difficult to mix it in to the finished product. Another big advantage of this lens is that it has image stabilization. The 85 and 50mm F1.2 lenses do not have image stabilization, and it probably does not matter if you are shooting at f1.2 as you would likely be able to have a stable shutter speed. For still images though, if you can live with a little less bokeh, you save enough to buy a really nice Imageprograf 1100 printer with a second set of ink cartridges.

I wrestle with this question from time to time. Earlier this year I switched from Nikon (after 20+ years), and went to Canon. Prior to cleaning out my Nikon treasure, I picked up an R6M2 and it was a nice switch. I was given a nice trade in offer for my Nikon gear. I wound up walking out of the store with an R5M2 without spending any more money. The R6M2 is lighter in weight and takes a great photo. The one thing that blew me away with the R5M2 was the ability to shoot an event with a zoom at many different focal lengths, and when I needed to reframe and crop, it was incredibly convenient. I remember an uncle who was a competitive marksman telling me this old adage, "A good shooter will shoot good with any rifle, and a bad shooter will shoot poorly even with the best rifle." Gear is a tool to get the job done. You still need a solid foundation on how to get the job done regardless of the tool. Yeah, the bells and whistles can speed up your routine, and allow for some flexibility, but you still need to know what you are doing. I really like your videos.

It is possible with modern cameras to set the lowest iso, and a maximum the camera will use with auto iso. This way, it is possible to have acceptable iso while the photographer still has to keep an eye on the aperture to have an acceptable shutter speed. Modern cameras make live easier, certainly with today's good high iso, while excellent photographers still handle their camera in such a way they have the cleanest pictures

Good point about bringing backup units. I have an old 580EXii also. I don't like using it on camera because it is big and heavy. But it is indestructible. Plus, it has an infrared light to help you focus in the dark without blinding anyone. My Yongnuo flash doesn't have that. But the little pullout white reflector on the Yongnuo came off in my hand the other day in the middle of a job. Who knows what will go next. Deciding what unit is right is for you, especially with remote triggers involved, is not easy. And you may need two, so you have backup. You are the voice of reason in YT photography.

Great tips - thank you!! Your video just "happened" to pop up on my KZbin channel. Perhaps because I needed some guidance with my new Godox V860IIIS Flash. More specifically using flash inside of church where the lighting is so warm and the ceilings are so high. I'm not a professional photographer but always the "go to" person asked to take photos at gatherings and feel stressed because I don't practice enough so when it comes time to take pictures, it's like starting from square one again. I am using a Sony A6500 (APS-C) and Sigma 24-70mm lens which is heavy for my hands so I use a tripod. I shoot in AP mode. Any advice on using the flash with all of these variables? Appreciate it!

This and the old ef 200 prime were my bread and butter. I still use the 200 on Sony and think it's the best 200 ever made. It has so much character like the 50 1.4 that modern lenses just don't have anymore.

@@CoffeeandPhotographyTalk I ditched Canon after using them for 20 years when I went mirrorless. I still use a couple old L lenses though. I think I'm about to switch once again to Nikon though lol. Not sure. I'm still using a Sony 7Riii which I love but the raw files from the z7ii are sweet. I also like Nikon's glass choices and their 1.8s have great character instead of the "must be clinical" glass everyone is making these days.

Loved this lens when i shot Canon. My only gripe was the build quality. The internal collar that moved the glass was notoriously bad. I went through 3 or 4 copies of this lens and got good at repairing them lol. I almost want to buy another one to use on Sony. Some of my best shots were made with that lens. I've been switching my stance over the years and going more to character glass over clinical sharpness.

My understanding from other reviews is that it has FOCUS SHIFT issues, making it useless for accurate macro work. Even with manual focus as soon as it is stopped down it will shift focus. I really wanted to get this lens but guess I'll have to stick with my EF 100 for my mirrorless camera. Good macro and lighting tips though!

If the ef lenses work flawlessly with the adapter and they are a fraction of the price of RF it makes sense to buy EF unless you come across either a great deal on the RF glass or there is not an EF lens available to fill the role of a new RF (maybe some new zoom range and f-value not available in ef).

For me, Av NEVER works, the camera ALWAYS selects the wrong shutter if Im trying to gt birds or something. In fact, I cant seem to get any of the semi auto modes to work on my r7 given my subject so Im typically stuck in Manual
