loosing 5 kw in the process, and heating the alternator up to 77 degrees. pretty sure it'll cook if you would run this alternator under the hood of a car 🤣 (66% efficiency.........)
@Safiery3 күн бұрын
Its not a conventional alternator. Its a bi-directional motor generator at 90% efficiency. We start our long run tests today. I dont see any difficulty with 8kW continuous and then add Scotty from 12V factory alternator and on a Sprinter we will get 10kW continuous.
@cobra800hp19 сағат бұрын
the 5kw loss is the 3phase motor loss that's driving the alternator , you can see this as Grid load / AC load
@JeroenVissers19 сағат бұрын
Typically large motors have an efficiëncy of 88-95%. So what you are saying is ridiculous. It's okay to agree with me that this is a hoax . A loss of 30% is definitely not good 😂

Why don’t you use Victron Orions instead of the orange one?
@Safiery5 күн бұрын
For 12V systems, we do. For 48V systems, the big advantage is speed of charging from an alternator and the orange DC DC you see is 125A both when charging and when discharging. Its bi-directional, Orions aren't and their efficiency is way less.

@@Safiery my standard 15kWh LiFePo4 battery boxes (eel+eve) are 100kg per box so about 6.7 kg per kWh. Yours are about 7.4kg per kWh. And much sturdier. I love it. I now use 90kWh of eelboxes with 3x5kVA MP2 to power a temporary home and the construction site of my new home. The people at the construction site never witnessed running on full solar power and were quick to dismiss it with not enough power. But now it powers all of it. The hardest part was to explain them to use star power instead of delta power. ;-). I hope prices of your battery will get affordable. Because victron+your batteries should be normal to the construction people. In the original offer they had to build my home a tiny note that said that the diesel to run their generator was excluded from the all inclusive price. With this system they can even precalculate the diesel needed to keep the batteries in check or even add a solar power option. I do hope your alternators will also become available. Once the battery bank is at the desired state of charge... Say 80-100%... Does the alternator's drag on the engine diminish? I.E. does the field coil have a feedback mechanism through the regulator, ultimately acting on a signal from the battery BMS? If it does, how much horsepower does the alternator / generator utilize when battery charging is not demanded?
@SafieryАй бұрын
Yes, the load on the engine is determined by the load requested from the battery. Having said that we have a "soft, Medium and hard" power control setting that scales that. I dont know the power it will consume with zero load. We will find out when we fire up our test rig later this month.
@robertdavis8646Ай бұрын
If this is a permanent magnet motor, could it run directly off of a 48V battery bank? Why was an inverter referenced? I misunderstood the setup in the last comment and deleted it because don't want to spread misinformation.
@SafieryАй бұрын
All PMG's are AC 3 phase and all need an inverter to convert to DC. The more basic version of the wound alternator are simply diodes. Second issue is control. Which is why they generally call them inverter/controller. In this video its the open source VESC BLDC. if you look at my recent video using these as a generator, its controlled by CAN commands to the controller which sets voltage and current.
@robertdavis8646Ай бұрын
@@Safiery 14 second in, it's stated that the motor is 48V driven by 1 - 48V battery. Later at 1:26 it's stated that the motor is AC. Pardon my confusion, but I think that the electric winch motor is 48V AC being driven from a DC to AC inverter that just so happens to also use 48V DC as the original power source? So it's 48V DC battery - through the inverter controller that can precisely control the winch motor speed that sends AC power to the 48V AC motor. Did I finally get it right?

Tbh. As cool as mild hybrid functionality is. Just the ability for it to start the engine, then provide 48V power to the vehicle is already very interesting. I can't tell from the footage exactly which unit this is, but I've already followed a few blog posts from folk reverse engineering these types of motors for their own purposes from brands like Continental as used in many VAG vehicles and while it's not a project I have time, space or funds for, I did like the idea of taking a pure mechanical diesel motor like an OM606 and slapping one of these on it with a view to having a vehicle that solely had a 48V electrical system and no 12V battery at all. Similar vein, just slapping one of these on a single cylinder stationary diesel for non mobile off grid scenarios is pretty interesting. Alas I have more time for thinking about crackpot schemes than performing crackpot schemes.

@callumkingunderwoodАй бұрын
Serpentine, so you'll normally see on vehicles with these types of motor from factory that they have quite a tight belt wrap on them, and sometimes an extra rib or 2. These are only used in _mild_ hybrids. You don't ever drive under electric power alone with such a unit, though it does have enough torque to start the engine while in a driven gear and still adds a tiny lil bit of grunt to get it rolling, but generally you are relying on the ICE power plant to do a lot of the work.

Amps are low, and charge the battery, the volts, are where the power output is. But, it's an alternator, so, power output proportionally increases current generation, to a point... it would deplete the battery eventually.
@SafieryАй бұрын
Yes you would. But we have a battery protect function that would stop the mild hybrid at a preset voltage point. This will give some breathing space to recharge and not operate as mild hybrid. the parameters would be set on the App.
