How long should the second upright drying stage take ?
@SpearwithXАй бұрын
@ it depends on the type of weather in your area at the time of year you’re doing this. I am in Southern California and it isn’t too cold and moderately humid in the days so possible 3-6 weeks depending. I generally check once a week to see how tail is doing and if easily compresses when squeezed. You want it stiff enough to hold shape with the ends dry enough to accept clearcoat/epoxy. Hope that helps.
@MattWarren-q7rАй бұрын
Thanks is summer here in Australia so it’s pretty warm. Should it be kept in the dark in an upright position and do you have another video of how you seal it and mount it ?
@SpearwithXАй бұрын
@ yes it should be out of the sun to preserve the appearance until after it is clear coated with uv protection and yes upright to let it complete drying in cup of salt. I made a video of a tuna tail trophy recently that you can find on my channel page. Hope it helps and let me know how your project goes.

I want to do this with my 80 lb yellowfin's tail but wanted to know how badly it smells. Is it pungent outside in your backyard or does it kind of air out?
@SpearwithX2 ай бұрын
@@kdub9146 varies by fish but it will smell some. In a cup of salt will help until it’s dried. It doesn’t really smell after cutting and clear-coating the end (or epoxy) and clear coating the rest of the tail. Smells get trapped inside of it. 🤙🏼

Awesome Video! I'm trying this now with a Halibut tail from a 38"er that my son caught. Any tips? Can I salt it in the fridge?
@SpearwithX4 ай бұрын
@@FishingforMemories I would fan out the tail as nicely as you’d like it to look after severing it and freeze it solid first. Then you can prepare a box big enough for the tail and fill with regular inexpensive salt. Put tail in it and cover completely and close with lid. Keep it this way for four or 5 days to set the tail. Then transfer to a cup of salt standing upright to allow the rest of the drying process to happen ideally in a cabinet outdoors to deal with odors. Could take 1-3 months depending on your local weather/humidity. Good luck and let me know how it goes! 🤙🏼
