Is it better to use a reel or a float line when diving the kelp.

It comes down to personal preference so I recommend trying both and deciding what you prefer. I have done both and prefer a reel, but not by itself. I still use a floatline just attached to my gun and a little longer than the depth I will be diving at. This is for boats and dive buddies to see me and also so I can let go of my gun at any time. The main difference between how I do it and using a breakaway setup for a floatline, is the length of the floatline would be much longer like 100’- 125’ for the brakeaway setup vs maybe 25-50’ the way I do it and is easier to manage in the water. There are advantages to each way. If you went with real only (no floatline), it is the least amount drag in the kelp but then you could loose your gun to a fish or dropping in bad vis. I hope that makes sense. 🤙🏼
