I've worked for Europcar and Avis/budget in Iceland and I would always recommend the SCDW. I know it's more expensive but its pennies compared to what you would pay if you damage the car and you're basically insured for everything except undercarriage damage which you don't have to worry bout unless you're driving on alot of f-roads. If you're renting a car in Iceland be extremely cautious of wind. Like Richard said it can blow sand and ash and damage the car and It can blow your car door up and damage the door and fender.

Oooh i wasnt to big a fan of white. But with the dark red interior and roof it really works. No lumbar is gonna kill it for me though. That at being 6ft 3 might be challenge. I cant believe the lack of lumbar support though. I had a car without once, never again.

In my point of you, you should keep the car keep clogging up miles... my dad bought his dream car which is land cruiser Prado in 2000. Now it has 800,000 km kept up all the maintenance... he lives in Sri Lanka.. and he have no intention of selling it. I wouldn't want him to sell it either because that car is unkillable.. I do not know why people change their cars every five years or sooner.

I had the previous 2016 model and I completely disagree unless the new model is corrected. It was dangerously underpowered, made so cheaply that everything inside vibrated from the engine revs, it captured so much noise that driving on the highway for longer periods of time resulted in ears ringing, the electronic clutch was abysmal and visibility of the corners of the car was terrible. It has seriously put me off buying Toyotas.

Wow very interesting video, a lot of effort, 2 bits of info stand out for me, clutch wear is roughly 25% per 50000 miles, and that you have spent £31000 in fuel over the course of ownership which is more than the cost of the car new and the maintenance combined which means the big winner here is the taxman, thank you for this insight into running a car in the UK

Interesting video! I have driven in Europe before when the UK was in the EU and I have driven in Poland (rental car) in 2023. I am thinking of driving into the EU this summer (2025) and wanted to ask about ULEZ. I drive a Mercedes C180 Elegance (2005 model) which is fully ULEZ compliant for hassle free driving in central London for example. How does ULEZ operate in Spain for example? Or other places in Europe? Does my car's ULEZ compliance work the same way? Thanks. Lee

I've seen a lot of car presentations when looking for a car, but never one as good as this one. Many equipment details and, above all, functions were shown that other testers never showed or mentioned, but which are very important to me. About this car: I will buy it! I have two viewing appointments in the next two weeks. Either it will be a “Team Germany” (a special model in Germany based on the “Teamplayer” equipment line) + technology package, or the “GR Sport”. Really very cheap as a daily permit. The Corolla doesn't really excite me. But it doesn't promise to cause any trouble, it seems to promise reliability, economy, economy and no unpleasant surprises. Last year we were on holiday in Great Britain with our motorhome for the second year in a row and I felt as if the British drove more German cars than we did here in Germany! I actually wanted to buy a real German car, a Mercedes-Benz C300e or a BMW330e. These cars really look fantastic inside and out, and as a young used car they would have been affordable for me. But I've read again and again about technical problems and incorrect designs that can be very expensive for owners. I just don't want to risk switching from my reliable 15-year-old Peugeot to a BMW or Mercedes-Benz and then having to constantly have expensive trouble with a "high-end planer"! Yes, I think the German car industry will follow the British path - takeover and run-off! The Chinese are taking over!

Hello Richard. Great videos, well researched and clearly spoken. I particularly liked France, Italy and Poland. At first I thought I had nothing new to learn but then I found lots that I never knew about despite having driven in some of these countries for decades. So no excuses for me now. Just ordered some more yellow vests too, thought one was enough. 😟

Toyota is doing a lot of things right when it comes to the economy of their engines. It's crazy how little they all use. Even my old 2017 Yaris with 111 hp (non-hybrid) came to about 55-60 MPG on the highway at 80-87 mph.

As you've said, locals in Spain don't give two fucks about speed limits, unless there's a radar. If you abide by them you'll most certainly get tailgated and aggressively overtaken. Also, almost no one actually stops at stops.

Too many things going wrong in less than 100,000 miles. Glad I saw this video as I currently own a Honda I was thinking of trading for a used Leon. No chance! My other car is a 2002 2.0 petrol Toyota Rav4. None of that rubbish at all. Servicing, batts, wiper blades, brakes and tyres, something finally went wrong just weeks ago: I had to replace a brake light bulb.

@RichardFanders, I own the new (mk 4) leon and with regards to the touch sensitive heating /volume controls you can tap each side of them to increase/decrease the temperature instead of having to slide left and right. I find this is a lot easier and works well with no hassle. Also, the Fr comes with lane assist, auto parking, apple carplay/android auto, automatic emergency breaking (pedestrian detection), voice control, etc. and I've had no issues with these in my experience. Also, I find that the cabin is very roomy and the electronic handbrake/auto hold is very handy!. I hope this helps 😀

The upgrades you mentioned. I had a 1.4 140 FR Leon and now have a golf 7.5 1.5 150 golf. I think the 1.4 engine is sweeter and smoother. Less hobbled back by emissions regulations. 1.5 now being euro 6. Nothing wrong with the 1.5 apart from it has similar issues to your mx5 when cold and moving off and it's less fun to rev. Noisy over 5000rpm. Very quiet at low revs but no reward in revving harder than about 3000. Low down its probably slightly less smooth so 1.4 is probably nicer for your pupils. Plenty of torque so you don't need to work it that hard and also noticably sweeter with premium fuel. Also gain about 50 miles of range in using it. It's also slightly less economical in town. More economical on a run. Had over 60pmpg a couple of times but usually about low 50s on a run. And more modern versions of VW based cars have much worse usability. It's a big shame they've gone backwards. That's one reason I got a golf 7.5 estate and not an 8.

Thanks for another superb video, including the great explanation of what a sports car should be. Have always loved open two-seaters and the MX5 in particular, and perhaps one day I'll be able to justify one again.... A few comments: 1) you asked about engine problems - I've got a 2021 US-spec Mazda3 (6-speed manual, with a 2.5 litre unblown version of the engine), and recently got a notice from Mazda saying there's an occasional problem with the engine thermostat (they've been known to stick open and over-cool the engine) and they've extended the warranty on this item to 15 years/150,000 miles. That was also the only problem I had on my previous 2006 Mazda3 (US-spec), and it's an easy fix. 2) I agree 100% with the entertainment/navigation systems' two round controls being superior to a touch-screen, the Mazda's system is much easier to use than my UK-spec 2018 Golf GTI's touch-screen. Mazda got this right 🙂. 3) Shame about the rust - I remember a saying in the 1970s that you could use a Mazda in a salt mine and it wouldn't corrode-- how times have changed!

Now that you have mentioned it, I think a lot of cars were designed for left hand drive countries so cars produced for British people feel awkward because most of the dials or information are easily accessible from the left seat rather than the right hand side of the car

As a Spaniard, I have assumed that, unless there are signs to the contrary, the right of way at a crossing is always the right of way. Fortunately, I have never driven in the United Kingdom, but I understand that there, the right of way to the left must be the general rule, right? In the United States, the general rule at a crossing without signs is that the one who arrives at the crossing first has the right of way!!!
