Hey, I've got a 2003 Protege DX that is manual and has just reached 105K miles. What sort of maintenance issues do I need to look out for and what preventative maintenance should I go ahead and do? Since it's got such low mileage I figured Id put some money into it but I don't want to put too much money into this thing because the exterior looks like crap. Almost all the clear coat is gone on the roof, and it's patchy all around the car, not to mention I had to weld a new radiator support into it and replace the hood and bumper cover due to the previous owner rear-ending someone. But as of right now, I believe I need to replace the clutch system. It shifts gears smoothly as long as I release the clutch very slowly and smoothly otherwise it lurches back and forth in first. It also seems to lurch forward under any form of acceleration no matter what speed or gear it seems to be in. Any help to keep this thing going for as long as I can would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
@RetrocarStyle6 күн бұрын
@@garrettanderson2528 So...at 105 miles the following is due: Oil & Filter, Spark plugs, Engine Air filter and timing belt. Im currently working on a video on the timing belt. Hopefully I can get it uploaded soon. As far as the lurching, check the engine mounts, they may need replacements. Replacing the rear mount will give you the most grief but it controls most of the engine movement. The front one is small and usually wears first. Ive replaced mine with a solid mount to keep the others from wearing prematurely. I suggest you do the same. Keep in mind, the longer you keep the car the more money it will need to keep it running. Thats not exclusive to the Protege, thats for ANY car.

Can I install an mp3 Ecu on a P5 which is automatic? Thanks for the great videos 👍
@RetrocarStyle18 күн бұрын
@@rodas_guinea You can but for a Protege equipped with an automatic gearbox you likely wont notice much of difference because the torque converter will minimize any gains. I recommend to install the JDM FS-ZE without the MP3 ecu and run 93 octane fuel. That alone will pit some very noticeable pep in your driving experience

If you really want the car, do the engine swap. They are pretty reliable. Besides the annoying issues i've experienced they make great daily drivers. So far with the 2nd JDM engine, I have not experienced the oil consumption issue. Most JDM engines when sold to you have about 50-55K on them. I have about 165K on the one I have now which means it already has 200K on the clock and it runs very strong. I do change the oil every 5k with 10W-40 full synthetic..no issues. If you buy the car, I suggest swapping to the JDM FS-ZE variant which has 167HP. Makes a world of a difference. I'm sure there is some higher quality parts inside the JDM engine which the U.S. variant doesn't seem to have.

You bought the right clutch, exact same look has the original. Smart Move... The one i bought ( Upgrade Kit with Hi-Torque Steelback ) was 0.5 cm shorter on diamenter, and coils 1cm shorter... I just had to remove it, its vibrating a lot oon 1st gear and reverse on bite point... Iam going to put the original back on, see if it solves the problem.
@RetrocarStyleАй бұрын
@@JonPFS Some aftermarket parts can cause this. I have seen this happen on a friends car an 05 Hyundai Elantra. He put an after market clutch that was suppose to have a heavier spring but the whole kit wound up being much lighter and different from the OEM parts. Though it fit well, there was alot of vibration and chatter when applying the clutch. He had to take it out as well so that woulf be the place to look.

@RetrocarStyle2 ай бұрын
Well I don't know where you purchased your resistors so I cannot tell you exactly what you bought. BUT....Resistors are "readable".....The color of the resistor and the color and number of stripes on it tells you how much resistance the device provides. There are numerous charts you can google and download to help familiarize yourself on how to read resistors. Be sure to go back and watch at that moment as I did mention which wire is intended for ground and circuit completion.

(20:30) you say if your doing job solo you need 2 sets of spring locks, Why? Is it because the first set is stuck in old pressure plate? or because of better fit? First timer,
@RetrocarStyle3 ай бұрын
So I found that u might need 2 sets of locks because it makes the job faster as you can have both clutch plates compressed and locked, making the exchange quicker. My car was purchased with a modified Sachs 225mm pressure plate, which the fatter spring tool holds perfectly. The 210mm plate from LUK uses the smaller spring locks. Because of this it was actually necessary for me to buy a 2nd set of springs locks because one set just wouldnt fit. It may not be necessary in your case but it would definately speed things up because in order to get the spring locks out...you need to compress the pressure plate. You can compress the old plate with the cars hydraulics as shown in the video, then access a shop press and lock the new pressure plate with a 2nd set of springs. The LUK clutch uses the smaller springs. Not having 2 sets of locks makes the process alot longer if you only have one set of springs to compress 2 pressure plates.

Once you remove the VTCS system it adds a performance benefit, so there is no need to return the valves back. There is a secondary set of valves in the lower plenum that I reinstalled. Due to the low airflow at lower RPM, I didn't see a reason to remove those. If you remove the lower plenum valves, the effect man be that the engine will have reduced torque output in the lower RPM ranges, which would further reduce daily drivability.

You can also reference service and repair manuals on both cars ( ALLDATA or Mitchells ) and check resistance values for any differences.
